Sutton, Jr., Classical Studies, IUPUI Sutton cell phone: ; CYA: Students study the fundamental political, social, and cultural institutions of ancient Athens through personal examination of its material remains in the context of the modern city. Major monuments of art and architecture are examined with other important artifacts on sites and in museums in Athens and on excursions to Delphi, Peiraeus and major sites in the Attic countryside, including Eleusis, Brauron, Marathon, and Sounion. Students also gain an appreciation of how the past and present interact within the setting of the modern city. 2 Requirements Class participation. (25%) Attendance at every class is required; participation in class discussions will contribute substantially toward the final grade. Repeated absence will necessarily have a negative effect on learning and performance. Descriptive paper (25%). A two- to three-page analytic description of a building, art work or other artifact based on first hand examination in Athens selected from a list of possibilities to be distributed on the first day. Employ terminology and concepts learned in class and required reading to compose a systematic and diagnostic physical description of the subject. Due on the morning of Thursday June 5. Analytic paper (25%). A longer paper (five or six pages) in which the subject of the first paper is set in a larger historical, archaeological, art historical, and cultural context, based on required reading, class lectures and research. Alternatively, students may choose to discuss a particular institution or concept encountered in class (not recommended). This paper must employ an acceptable form of citation and include a bibliography of sources cited. Due on the morning of Wednesday June 11. Final Examination (25%). A two-hour written exam at 9:00 am on Friday 13 June will include identification and essay questions. The percentages listed above will serve as a guide for awarding the Final Grade; special circumstances (such as steady improvement or outstanding class participation) may justify deviation from a strict numeric calculation. Plagiarism (presenting another's work as your own) and other forms of cheating, including abuse of library materials, will result in loss of credit for the assignment. 5 Paper I (25%) Due on the morning of Thursday June 5. Compose a formal description of a building, work or art, or other artifact based on first-hand examination during one or more visits outside class. All choices must be approved by the instructor. Employ terminology and concepts learned in class and in the reading to compose a diagnostic description of the subject. This exercise is designed to teach you to look closely at an object using systematic analytic principles and vocabulary, and to present what you have observed in clear verbal form. Write this paper before doing any outside research. Length: 2-3 pages typed, or 4-5 pages handwritten. See the more detailed set of instructions below which were developed specifically for sculpture. For buildings or other objects you should apply similar principals. In all cases be sure that your description is clear and useful: it should move systematically (head to foot, front to back, etc. as appropriate) and point out features that are significant for identification, dating, and revealing its use and history (e.g. damage or cuttings that show construction or reuse). Paper II (25%) Due on the morning of Wednesday June 11. Option 1 (expanding Paper 1) Revise and rewrite the description you prepared in the first paper. This may require you to revisit the monument/object, which is a good idea in any case. Read a selection of the scholarship on the monument. Start with your textbooks and material on reserve to get ideas and bibliography. My comments on your first paper will include suggestions for problems to address and scholarship to consult. Compose an essay which presents your monument in its wider cultural and historical context, properly citing any sources you use with notes or in-text citation; the Hesperia articles provide good models for format, but feel free to use end-notes. Please include a separate bibliography. Option 2 (not recommended) You may write a research paper on one of the thematic issues touched on in class, not tied to one specific object or structure. This paper should, however, make heavy use of the material evidence, and demonstrate that you understand how to use it properly. Thus a paper on Athenian Democracy should pay attention to the evidence provided by ostraka, court equipment, and/or the civic buildings in the Agora and elsewhere; while a paper on aspects of drama in Athenian life should make use of the theaters themselves, choregic monuments, and representational evidence of art. All such topics must be approved in advance.
