The Museum provides access, engagement, cultural development and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The Australian Museum conducts a wide range of programs, services and research to engage and promote biodiversity conservation and cultural awareness. The Museum holds 18.5 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and activities onsite, online and offsite. The Museum s mission is to inspire the exploration of nature and cultures, and was founded in 1827 as the first museum in Australia. Primary purpose of the role The Creative Producer - Children s Programs is responsible for developing and coordinating the range of programs on offer for children (0-12 years) and their families. This includes overseeing the upkeep and development of new activities and materials in Kidspace. Key accountabilities Develop and deliver innovative children s programming as part of the Audience Engagement Strategy. Ensure children s programs and resources are relevant, innovative, accurate and attractive and can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse target audiences. Increase the use of the Museum s collections and research and ensure programs are meaningful to community and audiences. Coordinate the collection of visitor data for children s programs for a CRM (customer relationship management) database and utilise data for program marketing. 1
2 Key challenges Short time frames in which to develop new and innovative programs that can be targeted and adapted for different audiences and to ensure those programs are rigorous whilst also being outstanding in a contemporary popular culture environment. Ensuring programs are relevant and engaging so as to increase Museum audiences and visitation. Being able to work on a number of programs and events at the same time and balancing quality with timeliness. Key relationships Who Internal Assistant Director Public Engagement and Culture Why Ensure children s programs offered are consistent with wider aspirations for museum programming and exhibition development, particularly the Audience Engagement Strategy. Front of House Ascertain the needs and expectations of visitors, students and teachers with respect to children s programs and events, and ensure that the front of house team are aware of the details of programs running on any given day. Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) Work with AMRI to ensure programs the Museum s science is creatively and innovatively translated to young audiences. Marketing and online teams Ensure programs are promoted effectively and participate in CRM database is developed. Visitor Services team and manager Coordinate across the broader program on offer at the Museum, particularly the segment of it organised by the Visitor Services team. External Early Childhood education community Ensure that the Museum is meeting community needs and keeping up to date with current best practice. Role dimensions Decision making Projects are developed in a consultative manner with the Visitor Services Manager and Head, Visitor Experience. The Creative Producer - Children's Programs operates with a level of autonomy in respect to assigned operational areas, and is responsible for developing program content and identifying resource requirements for the programs. Reporting line The Creative Producer - Children's Programs reports to the Visitor Services Manager of the Australian Museum. Role Description Creative Producer - Children's Programs 2
3 Direct reports The Visitor Services Officers are supervised by the Creative Producer - Children's Programs. Interns or other volunteers may report to this position on an occasional basis, and the position may be responsible for the supervision of contractors on occasion. Essential requirements Experience within a public program team and experience in developing innovative programs for museum audiences. Tertiary qualifications or comprehensive experience in a similar role Experience in event management including research and project management skills. The successful applicant will need to hold a current Working with Children Check The successful applicant will need to hold a current First Aid qualification.
