1 The Fraternal Colonel October Edition 2014 Zack Brown Student Life Intern Officer Transitions Leadership is lifting a person s vision to high sights, the raising of a person s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations -Peter Drucker It s that time of the year where our current executive councils come to a close and a new birth of leadership arrives. An effective officer transition can provide an organization with stability so that the subsequent officers can be informed of their responsibilities, grow confidence in their new positions, maintain momentum, construct upon the knowledge gained, and share experience and insight. The opportunity for potential accomplishment is in the hands of our new leaders as they take their oaths to live ritual each day. As our new officers from IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC and individual chapter s transition to new leadership, we would like to wish all those who are elected a successful term. 2 Chapter Reports Panhellenic Alpha Omicron Pi: AOII was excited to see all alumnae at homecoming! We took a trip down to our headquarters in Nashville to visit many of our own alumnae and spend time with our sisters! We have been working really hard on our biggest philanthropy event, lipsync, and hope to see everyone there! Alpha Gamma Delta: Alpha Gamma Delta was paired up with the men of Kappa Alpha Order for the homecoming float this year. With hard work and dedication, they ended up placing second! Also the chapter is preparing for their annual volleyball tournament, Alpha Gam Slam which is on November 22nd and 23rd. We hope to see many organizations throughout campus attend this event! Kappa Alpha Theta: The women of Kappa Alpha Theta had a really eventful month! We initiated the Fall '14 pledge class into our sisterhood and were excited to finally share our ritual with them! With October comes the Kappa Alpha Theta day of service as well on our founder, Bettie Locke's, birthday and in her honor we made blankets to donate to the 2

3 children of Madison county CASA. Between four thetas being on homecoming court (and one being crowned queen!) and three initiates into the Order of Omega, October was a very busy month for the women of Kappa Alpha Theta! Delta Zeta: During the month of October Delta Zeta supported National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week through our I Have a Choice Campaign. We teamed up Kentucky State police to pass out taxi numbers on Corner and encourage students to sign our pledge not to drink and drive. We also hosted a victim of a drunk driving accident who spoke on behalf of MADD about her experience. We hope that this campaign impacted our campus and that all of those who attended found it beneficial! Kappa Delta: We started our month of October with initiating our new members. After initiation, our new members received their bigs and then celebrated with Kappa Delta Christmas. Kappa Delta also contributed in different volunteering events during the past month. One of those events was the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure that our girls went to early on a Saturday morning. Our sisters also volunteered at different elementary schools and a pumpkin patch during October. This month Kappa Delta participated in the all-campus intramural flag football league, in which we won the Championship. Kappa Delta s were additionally very active in Homecoming this month, where we were paired with the lovely men of Theta Chi during the annual homecoming parade. We started homecoming week off by participating in Paint the Town Maroon, where we decorated Dales and Purdy s in EKU spirit. We also were happy to host an Alumnae dinner where we were able to catch up & socialize with alumnae sisters. Our most exciting part in Homecoming was seeing our beautiful sister and President being on the homecoming court of Lastly, in October Kappa Delta elected our new council, which we are eager to see what this year has in store for them. For the month of November our sisters are excited to participate in Lip Sync, contribute in sandwich making for the homeless, sisterhood events and a carnival theme Girl Scout event. 3

4 Pi Beta Phi: This month, all of our new members got their bigs. They also just initiated this weekend! We also teamed up with the men of Alpha Tau Omega to play as a wiffleball IM team. Don't forget about Frats at Bat on Sunday November 16. Also, Pi Phi Thanksgiving dinner is Thursday the 13th from 7-10! We hope to see a great turnout! Chi Omega: Chi Omega has had a blast in October! We had a sisterhood at Kelley's Farms Pumpkin Patch. We picked out pumpkins, had adventures in the corn-maze, and rode a hayride! We also got the wonderful opportunity to work with the men of Kappa Sigma to build a Homecoming float. Homecoming morning, we enjoyed a breakfast with our alumnae while we watched the parade. We enjoyed catching up with our sisters while watching the Eastern Kentucky football team take on a victorious win. As well, we hosted a Masquerade Ball at the end of the month. It was a lively night full of dancing and making memories! We cannot wait to see what the next month has to hold! IFC Tau Kappa Epsilon: The Mu Beta chapter just installed their new executive board. Most importantly we are excited to have elected Ken Kinnemeyer as our new chapter President. We also just participated in AOII s annual lipsync. Though we did not bring anything home our boys still enjoyed themselves and are proud to have helped contribute to the philanthropy. 4

5 Sigma Alpha Epsilon: As mentioned in last month s submission, the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon KY Delta raised over $5000 for the Children s Miracle Network at their first annual Children s Miracle Network Golf Outing. On October 13, 2014, the SAE brothers traveled to Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center to present the check from the event and tour the hospital. This was a very humbling experience for these men and we hope to have continued success with our philanthropy events moving forward! Theta Chi: Theta Chi Fraternity Eta Beta Chapter raised over $1,500 after hosting the third annual Theta Chi for a Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Week; a philanthropy event that ran from Monday, Oct. 20 through Thursday, Oct. 23. Each day, Theta Chi members set up a table on Corner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. where they sold pink Colonels for The Cure wristbands for $2 to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In addition, they sold balloons for $1 to release at their balloon launch on Thursday, Oct. 23. For $3 you could receive a balloon and wristband and for $12 you could purchase a pink Colonels for The Cure T-shirt. More than 50 individuals attended the Theta Chi for a Cure balloon launch at the Greek Towers patio on Thursday, Oct. 23. To kick off the balloon launch, at 6:15 p.m. two breast cancer survivors shared their stories to the attendees. Vicki Harrington, breast cancer survivor from Kingwood, Texas was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, which was detected through her first mammogram. Within one year, she experienced a double mastectomy, 30 days of chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery. After a long process, she is proud to be an eight-year breast cancer survivor. After the speakers finished their presentation, all attendees were given a pink balloon to release in the air for individuals they know who have been affected by breast cancer. Theta Chi also celebrated our annual fall formal trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Theta Chi rented out the House of Blues for our formal dinner and dance. Everyone had a fun and safe trip over fall break. 5

6 NPHC Alpha Kappa Alpha: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated has completed several events for the fall 2014 term. We have completed a Get book smart series, where we provided study tips, homework help options, and health tips to ensure well rounded student success. We also hosted a Workout with the AKA's". During this event students danced their calories down through hip-hop instruction. Afterwards, we offered each participant fresh apples and bottled water. Throughout October we participated in several community service events. This included cleaning Lake Reba s playground, donating new to gently used dresses to the Liberty Place (women's rehabilitation center) and feeding families at God s pantry. Our fundraiser for the month consisted of a cook out, where we partnered with Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated. In the end, we raised a total $263, where we will buy 5 Thanksgiving Day dinners to feed needy families within Richmond community. of the 6
