2 Adding Locales to the FEMLAB GUI FEMLAB Resource Files All strings and words that appear in the FEMLAB graphical user interface (menus, dialog boxes, message boxes, tooltips, etc.) are stored in a resource file. The text to the right of the equal sign on each such row should be the localized version of the master string to the left, possibly using Unicode for non-latin characters. Note: The master strings to the left of the equal sign must not be changed. Pay attention to the following special cases: Greek letters and other special characters using Unicode should be preserved when translating the right side of the strings in the resource file The strings may contain HTML codes enclosed by < and >. These should normally remain in the translated string. The single character mnemonic for the shortcut key (the underlined character in the menus) should be changed to a suitable letter for the language that you translate too. Bear in mind the established characters for common File and Edit menu actions (copy, paste, open, save, etc.) and that all mnemonics that appear on the same menu must be unique. _mnemonic in the master string on the left side indicates a mnemonic. \n indicates a line break. It should normally remain where it is also after translation. # serves as a placeholder for variable strings such as names of spatial coordinates. They must remain in the translated string in a location that matches the one in the original string taking the structure and sentence ordering of the local language into account. Do not confuse this # with a # appearing in the beginning of a line indicating that the entire line is a comment. There must be one resource file for each language/locale, and they should all reside in the com.femlab.controls package. The name of the resource file must be FemlabResource_<ISO Language Code>_<ISO Country Code>.properties where the ISO language code is a lower-case, two-letter code that is defined by ISO-639. 3 The ISO country code is an upper-case, two-letter code that is defined by ISO For a full list of ISO country codes, see As an example, a resource file for Japanese in Japan should have the name: FemlabResource_ja_JP.properties Similarly, there is an error message resource file that contains all error messages that are included in FEMLAB. It has the same location and the name must be FemlabError_<ISO Language Code>_<ISO Country Code>.properties for example, for Japanese in Japan, FemlabError_ja_JP.properties UNICODE IN THE RESOURCE FILES When the resource files contain characters that are not standard ASCII characters, they must be encoded using Unicode characters. The Java compiler and other Java tools can only process files which contain Latin-1 and Unicode-encoded (\udddd notation) characters. This means that if the resource file is not a plain text file with the Unicodes as four-digit hexadecimal codes (\udddd), you must convert it into a file containing Latin-1 or Unicode-encoded characters. For this, use the native2ascii utility, which you find in the bin directory in a Java Development Kit (JDK). A JDK is not included with FEMLAB. 4 Creating Your Own Locale FEMLAB comes with a number of locales. The corresponding resource files lie in the jar\com\femlab\controls directory under the FEMLAB installation. If you do not find your language there you can create your own locale by translating a copy of a FEMLAB resource file and placing it in that directory. 1 Place copies of the files FemlabResource_en_US.properties and FemlabError_en_US.properties in the jar\com\femlab\controls directory under your FEMLAB installation and rename them by replacing en_us according to the following table (examples of country and language codes): Chinese zh_cn French fr_fr German de_de Japanese ja_jp Korean ko_kr Spanish es_es 2 Translate the new resource file by replacing the string to the right of the equal sign with an appropriate string in the translated language 3 The next time you start FEMLAB, the Settings tab in the Model Navigator contains an updated list where you can select your new language. Note that a change here will not take effect until the next time you start FEMLAB. To change the language, click the Settings tab in the Model Navigator and then select a language from the Language list. In order to view other character sets, make sure that you have appropriate fonts installed on your system. Two settings may still prevent you from seeing the correct characters and instead get a display of, for example, all squares: SYSTEM FONT DOES NOT SUPPORT THE CHARACTER SET If this is the case, you will not see the correct characters in the FEMLAB menus. The system font in Windows may not be able to display the characters. The default font in English (U.S.) Windows is Tahoma, which cannot display Japanese characters. You then need to change to another font, for example, MS Gothic. To to this: 1 Open the Display dialog box from the Control Panel. 2 Click the Appearance tab. 3 In the Item list, select Menu. 4 In the Font list, select an appropriate font. 4 CHAPTER 1: LOCALIZATION OF FEMLAB

5 5 Click OK. THE JAVA FONT IS NOT ADAPTED TO THE LANGUAGE If this is the case, you will not see the correct characters in dialog box components such as text strings and buttons. You must change the contents of the file font.properties. It will be somewhere in your Java installation. It should be in a folder with a group of files, including font.properties.ja, font.properties.zh, and so on. To get the fonts for the new language, rename the original font.properties to be, for example, font.properties.old, and then rename one of the other files to be just font.properties. Which one you choose depends on the language you want to see if you want to be able to read Chinese characters, rename font.properties.zh to be font.properties, if you want Japanese then take font.properties.ja, and so on. Now restart FEMLAB, and you should be able to see the proper language. You can always see Roman (English) letters, but otherwise you can usually only see one other language; which one depends on the properties file you chose. ADDING LOCALES TO THE FEMLAB GUI 5
