2014 PINK OUT FOR THE CURE Toolkit
What is PINK OUT for the CURE? Pink Out for the Cure is an outreach event for the Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama Affiliate that encourages healthy living and breast cancer awareness among some of the most passionate grassroots advocates for our cause: SPORTS FANS! This Pink Out for the Cure Toolkit provides resources and tools that your school can use to host successful events and help our Affiliate fulfill our Promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cure. Pink Out for the Cure events can help your organization to: Increase attendance Showcase community involvement and support Generate community and media interest in your organization s philanthropic pursuits Spotlight members of your organization/team who exemplify stewardship Honor breast cancer survivors and provide a memorial opportunity for families who have lost loved ones to cancer Educate your fans and other event attendees about the importance of breast health and early detection How do I host a PINK OUT for the Cure? Hosting a Pink for the Cure event is easy! Simply fill out the attached form, select a date of your choice or of an already-scheduled sporting event, and choose how you want to Pink Out your organization. By teaming up with Komen North Central Alabama, you will be provided with resources to assist you in planning your event. These include: Recognition as an official Pink Out for the Cure event Educational materials and information Discounted official Susan G. Komen merchandise (for fundraising only) Representation from Komen North Central Alabama at your event (as available)
How to PINK OUT Your Event Set up a table at the game where fans can pick up educational material about breast cancer from and sign up to participate in this year s Race for the Cure, to be held October 11, 2014 at Linn Park in Birmingham, AL Have the team wear pink shoelaces, socks, and/or wristbands Players can sport pink ribbon stickers on their helmets/jerseys Coaches and officials can wear pink ribbon pins and/or pink hats during the game Encourage fans to wear pink and create pink posters with words of support for players and breast cancer survivors If your athletic budget permits, purchase pink jerseys for the team to wear (these can be signed and raffled off for donations during the game) Get your mascot and cheerleaders involved: come up with creative cheers and pink signs for them to display Honor breast cancer survivors during breaks, at halftime in a highly visible area, like center court or the 50 yard line, and/or during the National Anthem Have your announcer read important breast health messages throughout the event We have provided sample messages in the Resources section of this toolkit! Up the ante and challenge the other team to also participate by having a contest to see which team can get the most fans to wear pink! Make sure to spread the word about your event! Post pictures of your event on Facebook and Twitter using #PinkOut Don t forget to post to our pages!
PINK OUT Coach s Corner Coaches play a huge role in their communities. As a community leader and role model, you can have a huge impact on the success of your organization s Pink Out event. Use the following tips to successfully plan your Pink Out: Name someone in your organization the team leader this person can promote the event throughout the community and encourage others to support the cause Organize a Race for the Cure team to support Komen North Central Alabama s efforts in your community If you have a personal connection to breast cancer, you can share your story and express your commitment to the fight against breast cancer Encourage others in your community to participate in the effort to help create a world without breast cancer If you can, promote the event and the cause through media outlets that reach your community local newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations Encourage the visiting coach to get his or her team/organization involved in the PINK OUT festivities
PINK OUT for the Cure Fundraising Ideas If your organization would like to help support Komen North Central Alabama s community outreach efforts beyond educating your crowd during your Pink Out event, you are welcome to add a fundraising component to your event. 75% of the funds we receive go back into our 38 county service area to support breast health education, screening/diagnostic and survivorship programs, while the other 25% helps fund breast cancer research. Add a donation option to the ticket price, if there is a charge All or this portion of the fee could be donated to the Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama Affiliate Host a raffle and sell tickets for Pink Out gear and other prizes Donate a portion of the gate/parking fees Donate a portion of concession sales made during the event Create a Wall of Hope to display in a high traffic area and sell $1 pink paper ribbons that can be added to the Wall in honor of loved ones or just in support of finding the cures Team up with your opponent leading up to game day to host a competition to see who can raise more donations. Announce the winning team during the game Pass pink buckets around the crowd during the game to collect donations Ideas for Schools Show Pink Penny Pride and compete with other classes to see who can bring in the most pennies Sell specially designed t-shirts before game day so everyone can wear them to your Pink Out for the Cure event Use The Power of 10 and encourage students to ask 10 people for $10
Fast Facts on Breast Cancer Nationwide 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. It is estimated that there will be 232,570 new cases of invasive breast cancer (includes new cases of primary breast cancer among survivors, but not recurrence of original breast cancer among survivors) in women and 2,360 new cases in men in There are about 2.6 million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States today. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States. Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama Susan G. Komen is a locally operated non-profit (501c3) organization; serving 38 counties throughout north central Alabama since To date, our local Komen affiliate has provided more than $5 million to local community programs and over $2 million into cutting-edge breast cancer research. Additionally, local researchers in Alabama have received more than $15 million from the Komen National Research Program P rogram, including nearly $1.5 million in funding for two new research projects in Alabama. Funds raised by Komen North Central Alabama help Alabama women today throughout our local communities and help improve outcomes for women tomorrow, working towards our goal of a world without breast cancer. We are able to help provide thousands of mammograms to women in North Central Alabama each year through our partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health. Three out of every four net dollars raised locally are invested to help reach, educate and support the breast health of local Alabama women today - the other dollar is coming back to our community in the form of funding for ground-breaking local research, better treatments, improved screening and the hope of better ultimate outcomes.
