1 Creating a Narrated PowerPoint (PowerPoint 2010) Adding narration to a PowerPoint can help instructors to create standalone mini lectures that can be posted on Blackboard. Students can view the PowerPoint and hear the instructor s commentary right from their computers at home, allowing instructors to free up class time for interactive engagement or to make up canceled classes. Narrated PowerPoints can also be used in online classes to provide students with the mini lectures or lecturettes on key content or concepts. To record narrations in PowerPoint, all you need is a computer microphone you don t need to download any additional software. Ideally, you would want a headset with microphone and earphones. Here are the steps for adding narration to your PowerPoint: Create your PowerPoint presentation as you would normally do, or find an existing presentation you would like to narrate. Click on Slide Show Record Slide Show Start Recording at the top of the screen to start recording your narration. While recording your narration, click on the mouse to advance the slides. When you are finished recording, right click on your mouse and select End Show. Save the presentation and upload it to Blackboard. Adding Narration to a PowerPoint First, you will need to create your PowerPoint presentation and save it. (You can t record narration until you have saved the presentation first.) To begin adding narration, go to Slide Show Record Slide Show. A window will appear, asking you what you want to record. Be sure to check both boxes and select Start Recording. 3/11/14 1 Faculty Center for Learning Development

2 Your presentation will open in a new window. You can begin your narration, clicking the mouse to advance your slides as you speak. Important: PowerPoint records the narration as an individual audio file for each slide. Be sure to pause when you have finished narrating a slide and do not begin again until the new slide has appeared, otherwise, you will clip part of your audio. When you are finished recording your narration, right click and select End Show. Viewing your Narrated PowerPoint To view your completed presentation, click on Slide Show and select From Beginning. The narration will begin and the slides will advance automatically as you view the presentation. Saving and Distributing your Narrated PowerPoint It is a good idea to save the narrated PowerPoint as a new file, in case you ever need to go back and edit or change the original PowerPoint. To save the narrated version, go to File Save As. Be sure to give it a new name so it doesn t overwrite the original. Narrated PowerPoints are large, posing problems for students and storage. To get around this, we ll now save it as a Windows Media Video file (wmv). To save your presentation as a video, go to File Save As and select Windows Media Video. Be patient! Conversion can take a long time look for the progress bar at the bottom of the PowerPoint screen and wait for it to finish. Now that it is a movie file, we can upload it to Ensemble. 3/11/14 2 Faculty Center for Learning Development

3 Uploading Your PowerPoint Movie File to Ensemble Ensemble Video is an in-house video server like YouTube and was designed for publishing and sharing large media files, such as audio and video files. It can be used to share video lectures, instructional videos, and helps centralize campus media by providing one stop media shopping for students and faculty. Ensemble is user-friendly and intuitive, and uploaded videos are organized into libraries that can be shared with others. Since videos are streamed rather than downloaded to a person s computer, they are better protected. Ensemble videos can be accessed from a website, a play list or directly with Blackboard, providing an easy way to share videos with students in a class. A few important details: Instructors must request a user account in order to start using Ensemble. Maximum upload video size is 12 GB (about 150 minutes of iphone HD video). When automatically embedding videos into Blackboard, use Firefox. Students who do not use Firefox may not be able to see the videos, so recommend Firefox to them as well. Instructors should KEEP copies of original uploaded videos. Ensemble compresses them into several formats suitable for streaming, and then DISCARDS the original. Instructors looking for permanent storage of videos should discuss options with ITS. Logging into your account: Call the Computer Support Line at (860) to request an Ensemble user account be set up for you. Go to Enter your login information. Your user name is the same as your Hartford user name and your password is your University password. Be sure to set Domain to Faculty. 3/11/14 3 Faculty Center for Learning Development

4 You are now at the main page of your account. The main menu buttons for your account are found at the top right of the page and are repeated mid-screen tabs as shown below. Uploading a video to your ensemble account: Click on the Media Library button. The Media Library contains all your uploaded videos and is also where you can upload additional videos. Uploaded videos are shown as thumbnails. To publish a new video click on the +add button. Media Library with Published Video You will be presented with a series of screens allowing you to provide basic information about the video, including title, date of creation, credits, and more. The first screen is the Descriptions and Keyword page. From this screen, add the video s title, description, keywords and credits. o Keywords will help you to locate videos in your library and will be useful when you have lots of videos uploaded. Separate Keywords with commas. o In the Credits section, you have the option of providing information about who made the movie. 3/11/14 4 Faculty Center for Learning Development

5 NOTE: When uploading you have the options of Advanced Mode and Basic Mode. Advanced mode allows you to add more detailed information such as Subject Details. At the bottom of the screen, click Continue to proceed to the Manage Content page. 1. Under Type, select Audio/Video. Uploading Files with the Manage Content Screen 2. Select the correct video format. a. Choose ScreenCapture for videos such as narrated PowerPoint presentations or software demonstrations, when clarity of detail outweighs smooth motion. b. Choose Widescreen for videos that have the extended rectangular shape of a movie screen or widescreen TV. c. Choose Standard for video that has the normal TV square shape. 3. Click Add File. Locate the video file you wish to upload and follow the instructions in the upload window. OR you can open the folder that contains the file on your computer and drag and drop it into the middle of this upload interface where it says Drag file here. 4. Click the Start Upload button, then WAIT FOR THE UPLOAD TO FINISH. (See picture below.) 3/11/14 5 Faculty Center for Learning Development

6 Waiting for the Upload to Finish 5. When the upload is complete, click Save & Continue. 6. Click Save and Publish. You will now see the video listed in your Media Library. Uploaded videos can be published to Blackboard, Ensemble play lists, YouTube, or a website.
