Volleyball Learning Facilitator Education WORKSHOP DELIVERY

2008 Volleyball Canada and the Coaching Association of Canada and its licensors. All rights reserved.

INTRODUCTION This document presents step-by-step instructions for Master Learning Facilitators (MLFs) on how to deliver a Learning Facilitator training workshop. This document complements How to Develop Volleyball Learning Facilitators, which describes the pathway to becoming an NCCP Volleyball Learning Facilitator (LF). Training is Step 3 of this pathway. How to Develop Volleyball Learning Facilitators is intended for all the individuals and volleyball organizations (Master Learning Facilitators, Provincial Volleyball Associations, etc.) responsible for identifying, selecting, training, and evaluating volleyball Learning Facilitators. By contrast, the present document is intended solely for the persons who deliver the workshops specified in Step 3 of the Pathway. Learning Facilitator training workshops are designed to provide Learning Facilitator candidates with the basic skills they will need to facilitate NCCP volleyball workshops in all contexts. The NCCP expects LFs to guide coaches in the development of the five core competencies (valuing, interacting, leading, problem-solving, and critical thinking) by engaging them in their own learning. LF candidates will be trained and evaluated on the basis of their ability to do the following: Implement an appropriately structured and organized workshop Facilitate the achievement of outcomes or learning objectives Display appropriate communication and leadership to enhance coach learning Manage the group to optimize coach learning (optional) Manage administrative aspects of the modules and the NCCP LF training focuses on the process of facilitation, not just the content of the workshops. It is assumed that LF candidates are content experts.

SAMPLE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE VOLLEYBALL LEARNING FACILITATOR TRAINING WORKSHOP SCHEDULE TIME 9H30 Welcome and Introductions THEME 9h45 The Program Outcomes, Objectives, and Certification Requirements 10h15 Volleyball Learning Facilitator Roles and Responsibilities 10h45 Course/Program Content, Activities, and Schedule 12H30 - LUNCH 13h30 on court Technical and Tactical Review 14h30 on court The On court Sessions, In Course Assessment and Final Evaluation 15h15 Administration - Reporting Participant Results 16h00 Wrap-up 16H30 - END OF COURSE

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS 1. Workshop leaders should arrive in sufficient time to complete the preparation of materials, A/V equipment, and facilities prior to everyone else s arrival. This will allow each person to be greeted in a relaxed manner without feeling rushed or distracted. 2. Whenever possible, make contact with each person as he/she arrives. 3. Once everyone has arrived, introduce the leaders. You may want to include details such as names, coaching backgrounds and why each person has been chosen as an instructor for the workshop. 4. Thank participants for their involvement as LFs and for attending the workshop. 5. Go over logistics (bathrooms, locations for the workshop, entry to facilities, times, etc.). 6. Hand out any additional materials related to the course. 7. Review the workshop content and the workshop expectations. 8. Review the timetable for the course. Make sure everyone understands what will be taking place. THE PROGRAM OUTCOMES, OBJECTIVES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Review the program outcomes, objectives, and certification requirements with the group. These details can be found in the first 6-7 pages of the Learning Facilitator Guides for all contexts. Ensure that all LFs have a clear understanding of the program objectives and the certification pathway a coach will need to complete. VOLLEYBALL LF ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Discuss the appropriate roles and responsibilities for a LF. Where appropriate discuss how the role of the instructor has changed from the old NCCP paradigm. The section on Leading the Course in each LF Guide is excellent reference material for aiding in the delivery of this topic. COURSE/PROGRAM CONTENT, ACTIVITIES, AND SCHEDULE Review the course schedule with the LFs in detail. Examine the different ways the course could potentially be delivered and go through each course activity in detail. Examine the different delivery methodologies that could be used for each session and make sure that each LF has an appropriate delivery strategy for each section. TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL REVIEW On court, discuss in detail the technical component and the tactical components related to the program context. Be sure each LF has a good understanding of the details of the technical and tactical components that are to be addressed within the context. Provide examples of appropriate activities and/or teaching progressions that could be used to reinforce coach understanding. Be sure all LFs are in relative agreement on the appropriate technical and tactical content to be delivered in the context.

THE ON COURT SESSIONS, IN COURSE ASSESSMENT, AND FINAL EVALUATION On court, run a sequence of drills as per the one of the course s on court practical sessions. Have one of the workshop leaders act as the candidate coach while the rest of the workshop participants act as players for the drills. The candidate coach should give a context appropriate coaching demonstration. This demonstration should be an imperfect performance. At the end of the demonstration have each LF complete a written assessment of the session using the appropriate assessment forms. Then, bring the LFs together to review the candidate coach. Ensure that all LFs are assessing the coach to a similar standard. Discuss how the assessment would change if it was an in course debrief, an end of course assessment, or a formal coach evaluation for certification. ADMINISTRATION REPORTING PARTICIPANT RESULTS Review the reporting procedures for all phases of the certification process. Be sure each LF fully understands their role in the NCCP reporting process and all related reporting requirements. WRAP-UP Bring the LFs together to answer any remaining or outstanding questions they may have. Discuss any additional tasks that the LF s need to complete (if required). Thank everyone for his or her participation.
