1 God Is Our Father 1 2 Jesus Lives in His Church understand that God loves, cares for, and forgives us like a good father. In giving us human life, God has given us something of himself, for each person is made in God s image. God has not only loved us into life, but also continually invites us to love in return and to grow in our relationship with him and with others. We belong to God. We are loved by God and are filled with God s own life and love. God calls us to share truth and love with one another and to work for the betterment of a world where many still hunger for recognition and respect of their human rights. When we are fully present in our experiences and in our relationship with the Lord we are, as Saint Irenaeus put it, fully alive the glory of God. To recognize with humility the wonder of the gifts the Lord has given us as members of the human family, to develop our abilities and share them with one another these are, in themselves, praise and thanksgiving to the Father. Genesis 1:26 27 God Made Humans in His Own Image. Through Baptism, each of us becomes a new creation, a new person in Christ. Each person in the Church is intimately bound to God and to others. The more everyone cooperates and supports others, the more the Church bears witness to the unity of the Body of Christ. All the members of Christ s mystical body are called to use their gifts to serve God and his people freely, imitating Jesus, who said he did not come to be served but to serve. (Matthew 20:28) Under Christ, the invisible head of the Church, members labor in different ways as fellow workers with God. Ephesians 2:19 22 One in Christ 1 John 3:1 Children of God 1 Peter 2:10 Now You Are God s People , 882, 1213, identify himself or herself as a child of God and as part of the People of God through Baptism. explain that the community s love and support are expressed in the baptismal ceremony. describe parts and symbols of the rite of Baptism. identify the leaders of the Church. bishop Original Sin Confirmation priest faith sacrament apostle one of the first leaders of the Church Baptism the sacrament that gives us God s life, makes us members of the Church, and takes away sin Church the group of people who believe and follow Jesus Eucharist the sacred, sacrificial meal shared by Catholics in which we receive the Body and Blood of Christ under the appearances of bread and wine godparents the people who promise to help parents bring up a baptized child as a Christian 48 Home Learning Guide

2 3 4 We Are God s Holy People understand that God calls us to be holy to know, love, and serve him. God not only calls us to be his holy people, but he gave us his Son to be the way and the truth and the life. Jesus showed us the way by becoming one of us, by living a life of holiness among us, and by teaching us. He gave us the Church and his Holy Spirit, both of which continue to guide us on our journey, strengthen us, and form us into God s holy people. Through Baptism, we are united with God and begin to live a new life in Christ. The Holy Spirit incorporates us into the family of the Church. Mindful of our call to holiness, we come together as God s people for each Sunday s liturgy. In and through Christ Jesus, the Church brings us to the Father. The Holy Spirit teaches us to know Jesus through his Church, the People of God. The Church is composed of people of all races, ages, and callings. This visible Church publicly helps manifest the Kingdom of God here on earth. As Catholics, we gladly acknowledge and respect those called to lead us to live in holiness. We listen with open hearts and minds to the teachings of the pope and the bishops. 3 5 6 chapter Baptism Unites Us with the Christian Community understand that Baptism gives us a share in God s life and makes us members of the Church. The Sacrament of Baptism cleanses us of Original Sin and totally transforms us so that we may enjoy a life of intimacy with God. Baptism initiates us into the community of faith, challenging us to help bring the entire human family into communion with Christ. As we celebrate the other sacraments, we are constantly reminded of how we are to live the life we received in Baptism. Saint Paul reminds us that Baptism has made us completely new in Christ. We have entered into his Paschal Mystery, his dying and rising. Now, dead to sin and risen with him, we must live as God s children. (See Ephesians 4:22 24.) John 1:35 42 The First Disciples John 3:5 Born of Water and the Spirit Acts of the Apostles 2:38 We Receive the Holy Spirit in Baptism , , explain that Baptism cleanses us of Original Sin. discuss the use of sacramentals. describe the Rite of Baptism. list the characteristics of a Christian. describe God s special love shown in Baptism. catechumen (KAT-uh-KYOO-muhn) chrism Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Original Sin anoint to sign with blessed oil conversion turning from sin to new life in Christ deacon a man ordained by the bishop to proclaim God s Word, to assist in the liturgy, and to do works of charity godparent a witness to Baptism who assumes the responsibility for helping the baptized person along the road of Christian life oil of catechumens oil blessed by the bishop used to anoint catechumens and strengthen them on their path of initiation sacramentals words, actions, or objects blessed by the Church that bring us closer to God Everything God Created Is Good understand that God created the world and all creatures and made us stewards of the world. God s love is creative. Not only did God create everything from nothing, but God continues creative activity by bringing forth new life and sustaining all things. God invites us to participate in this creative love by using our gifts carefully and with innovation to benefit the good of all. As stewards of creation, we are tasked to protect and care for all life and the natural resources of the earth, preserving these gifts through conservation, reclamation, recycling, and other ecological methods. With the help of science, industry, and art, we are to develop the resources of the earth, design new products, and improve the circumstances of life for all people. God, in divine power and love, not only created a beautiful world for our use and enjoyment, not only bestowed on us wonderful powers of body and mind, but also permits us to share in the very work of creation. Genesis 1:1 2:25 The Two Creation Stories Psalm 139:14 Wonderful Are All Your Works. 280, 283, , 294, summarize the biblical stories of creation and explain that they are intended to teach religious truths, not scientific or historical facts. explain what it means to be made in God s image. describe our responsibility to use the gifts of the earth justly and creatively. describe creation as a gift from God. differentiate between right ways and wrong ways to care for God s creation. free will stewardship evolution a slow, continual change from a lower form of life to a higher, more complex form intellect ability to learn, to understand, and to reason 50 Home Learning Guide

4 7 8 Scripture: A Portrait of Jesus Jesus the Messiah understand that Scripture, God s inspired Word especially the Gospels helps us to know Jesus. Decades after the Resurrection, the existing written and oral traditions of the sayings and works of Jesus were compiled into the Gospels. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, each evangelist shaped the Good News with a unique style and emphasis for a particular group of people. The Gospels are inexhaustible treasures that bring us closer to the Lord of life. Through the Gospels, we find the way to a full human life. John 20:30 31 Jesus the Messiah John 21:25 Jesus Deeds Matthew 11:27 No One Knows the Father Except the Son , describe the purpose of the Gospels and how they came to be written. identify the books of the New Testament. describe the main message of the Gospels and recognize the features of the four Gospels. explain that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. identify and describe the books of the Bible. evangelist synoptic Acts of the Apostles book in the New Testament that describes the early Christian community Book of Revelation last book in the New Testament that encourages persecuted Christians to maintain their faith and hope in Jesus discourse a long speech epistles New Testament letters Gentile a non-jewish person Gospels the four inspired books that give an account of the life and teachings of Jesus Inspiration the action of God moving the human authors of the Bible to communicate what he wanted made known A Closer Look FOCUS: In this chapter, you will be helping your child to understand that the Church the community of disciples is a herald of the Good News, a sacrament, an institution, a servant, and a mystical communion. The Church is a community, a union of people. United in his Church, we each reflect what it is in our own lives. The Church has many aspects. As an institution, the Church has traditions, laws, and leaders. As mystical communion, we are members of the Body of Christ. As sacrament, we are signs of God s love. As herald, we are responsible for proclaiming the Good News. As servant, we are called to serve as Christ did. As a community of disciples, we declare our beliefs by professing the Creed and by living according to the teachings of Jesus and the Church. Through the power of the Spirit, who came to remake us in Baptism and Confirmation, we increasingly assume the characteristics of the Church, and of Christ. The Spirit s grace renews the earth until that time when there will be a new heaven and a new earth and all of us, united in love, glorify God with one voice. Acts of the Apostles 1:24 26; 2:38; 2:46 47; 4:32; 5:42; 6:2 3; 11:28 29 The Experience of the Early Church Isaiah 42:6 The Lord Calls His People for Justice , describe the origins of the Church and the experience of the first Christian community. identify four ways that the early Christian community was one. name and explain the six models of the Church. relate the models of the Church to activities in the life of a parish. explain how the family can be thought of as the domestic church. 5 GATHER AND GO FORTH CHAPTERS 1 25 Gather and Go Forth S 1-8 FOCUS: The new Gather and Go Forth pages at the end of every chapter respond directly to the Church s call for a New Evangelization. Material shows children how to know, proclaim, witness, share, and invite others to the Good News of Jesus Christ. The new pages encourage children to turn their hearts to God, share with others the Good News through their words and deeds, and take an active part in the life of the Church. Children live their faith and the goals of the New Evangelization when they use various features of the Gather and Go Forth pages: Scripture sidebar Scripture in every chapter helps children grow in understanding and love for God s Word, persuading them to embrace Jesus Christ and his Way. Know and Proclaim Faith facts and associated practices show children our unique identity as a Catholic people so children can be confident inviting others to faith. Test Your Catholic Knowledge A question that aligns with the NCEA IFG: ACRE provides practice in test taking and promotes children s understanding of a key faith concept. A Catholic to Know A brief biography of a saint shows a heroic life of Catholic witness who encourages children to live a life of holiness as a disciple of Jesus Christ. My Way to Faith statements allow children time to reflect on their Catholic beliefs so they can assess where they are on their path to holiness and where they d like to be! Share Your Faith Children are evangelizers when they make a discipleship promise to others, keep it, and then invite others to do the same. 140 Home Learning Guide
