7 Australia Japan Trade & Investment Australia and Japan enjoy a very strong trade and investment relationship. Japan has been Australia s largest export market since In 2004, Japan exported US$11.8 billion of merchandise goods to Australia and imported US$19.4 billion of merchandise goods from Australia. Over the last 15 years there has been growth in Australian exports of coal, iron ore, aluminium and copper. Japan is Australia s third largest foreign direct investor. (US$12 billion in 2003) Australia s level of foreign direct investment in Japan was US$355 in 2003.

8 Japanese Investment in Minerals Investment by Japanese companies is vital to Australia s resources industry. The involvement of Japanese Steel and Trading corporations led to the large scale development of Australia s iron ore industry in the 1960 s. Japanese investors are also very active in coal, aluminium and mineral sands projects in Australia. The Australian Government values the importance of the investment relationship with Japan and will continue to encourage further investment by Japanese companies.
