Investment Opportunities in Afghanistan
Afghanistan at a glance Land bridge connecting Central Asia to South Asia and Far East to Middle East
A transforming Afghanistan Afghanistan may not be picture perfect but it is improving politically, socially and economically and is en route to a critical turning point; Trade and investment are some of the main drivers of the economic growth in Afghanistan and its overall stability; Investments with a regional component as well as interregional trade will enable Afghanistan and its neighbours to move from the economic periphery to the very centre of a new but at the same time ancient world economic region.
Regionally important sectors agriculture transport and logistics energy and mining These areas are still underdeveloped making the time right to cultivate customers and establish a first mover advantage
Agriculture Proximity to large markets in the region: India, China, Pakistan and the wider Middle East; Enjoys counter-season market opportunities with several neighbours; Its organic horticulture product has good brand being the geographic origin of many high-end crops like raisins, pomegranates, pistachios and almonds.
Opportunities for Regional Investors Import and export of agricultural goods and agro-business equipment and fertilisers; Investment in irrigation facilities; modern processing techniques (involving cleaning, sorting and grading); Investment in packaging and cold storage facilities and transportation (since current packaging procedures are outdated and damage fresh goods en route to markets. In cold storage transportation, there are currently less than 50 refrigerated trucks available around the country) Investment in processing facilities (An example is fruit juices whose market value in Afghanistan is approximately 20 million USD with a yearly growth rate of around 15% all of which is currently imported)
Logistics and Transport Sector Afghanistan shares borders with six neighbours Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China and Pakistan; Is a land bridge connecting proximate country markets, as well as potentially large trading partners, such as Iran and India; Offers a point of access to an extended regional market of more than 2 billion people, linking the Middle East to Southern, Central and Southeast Asia; New and expanding trade routes. 3,300 kilometres of primary road network is almost completed; With the construction of our ring road, our national highway system, all Central Asian Capitals will be less than 32 hours from the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean; Commercial transport is a high-growth sector in Afghanistan and demand for transport services is expected to remain strong in the medium and long term
Logistics and Transport Afghanistan has immediate, almost unlimited demand for both transportation of industrial materials and consumer products; Transport volumes for commercial goods, almost double that of donor material, are expected to rise as Afghanistan s commercial infrastructure continues to improve; Improving infrastructure and security is resulting in increased transhipment of goods through Afghanistan; In order to further improve cross border transportation, strengthening of bilateral border management systems are required.
Opportunities Cold storage transportation facilities (refrigerated transport) as these facilities are near to non-existent inside Afghanistan; Joint ventures between Afghan Trucking Companies and foreign companies (due to visa restrictions, Afghan truck drivers cannot bring goods out of the country); (Currently no foreign companies operate in Afghanistan)
Energy Electricity trade is a win-win situation for countries involved since the region s countries complement each other on supply and demand; Development of domestic energy, through electric power generation, natural gas drilling, and hydropower are vital components in Afghanistan s reconstruction; At present Afghanistan s power system is connected to those of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.
Energy Natural Gas is one of Afghanistan s main energy resources; It is estimated that remaining proven gas reserves are about 1 trillion cubic feet while a probable figure is 1.5 trillion cubic feet; The mean volumes of undiscovered conventional recoverable hydrocarbons in northern Afghanistan are estimated to be billion bbl of crude oil, trillion cubic feet of gas, and 562 million bbl of natural gas liquids
Prospects Realisation of a better transmission network would benefit Afghanistan as well as all its neighbouring countries through bilateral trade with Afghanistan but also by using as Afghanistan as a connecting country; A number of obstacles can, however, currently be identified which includes: Trade occurs on an ad hoc basis and no trade is covered by PPAs. It is hence recommendable to regularise and expand ongoing electricity trade; An acute lack of transmission lines; Lack of harmonised policy and regulatory framework
Mining With approximately USD 100 million in public investment and around USD 360 million in private sector investment the annual value of Afghanistan s minerals reserves could reach USD 253 million up from the current value of USD 60 million; The annual economic benefit streams would include the creation of nearly 6,000 jobs, USD 17 million in taxes and royalties, and USD 100 million in value added activities
Areas for Investment Iron Ore Cobber Mining Gold; Marble Precious/Semi-Precious Stones; Coal.
