22 WHAT IS A CHOKE? o A choke is a mechanical device that induces restriction in a flow line, causing either a pressure drop or a reduction in the rate of flow

23 WHAT IS A BEAN? o One part of the choke is called a "bean." This term refers to the piece of hardware installed in the line that has an orifice, or opening, drilled into it. o The bean size is the inside diameter (I.D.), or bore, of the fixed orifice. These bores are available in 1/64th of an inch increments. o EG, 20 CV = 59/64th

24 TYPES OF CHOKES? o A positive choke has a fixed orifice size. Even though fixed chokes are available in a wide variety of sizes and types, the choke must be disassembled to change bean sizes. o An adjustable choke provides variable orifice sizes through some type of external adjustment device.

31 WHAT DO CHOKES DO? Flow & Pressure Control / Injection Applications

32 WHAT A CHOKE DOES CONTROL FLOW Field service lines and pipeline transmission lines are generally low pressure and require proper sizing for distribution of produced fluids. Chokes are an essential part of balancing these requirements.

33 MAXIMISE EFFECTIVE USE OF RESERVOIR PRESSURE Controlled release of reservoir fluids through proper flow and pressure regulation will maximize the life of the reservoir and the recovery of valuable oil and gas products.

34 PROTECT DOWNSTREAM EQUIPMENT Chokes are designed to eliminate over-pressurization of downstream equipment which protects equipment from damage.

35 ELIMINATE RESERVOIR DAMAGE Chokes protect reservoirs from injection pressures that would cause fracture or bleed-off of reservoir fluids. They also are invaluable for delivering precise rate control of injection components.

36 BALANCING PRESSURE IN COMMON FLOW LINE Multiple well manifolding is commonly used in both offshore and onshore facilities as an effective and efficient method for tying numerous wells into a single processing facility.

37 WHAT FLUIDS ARE CONTROLLED BY CHOKES? Well fluids, or production o Hydrocarbons, containing a mixture of fluids o Oil o Gas o Water o Sand o H2S o CO2 Can be both corrosive and erosive Injection chokes o Used to control water or gas injected back into the well to force / stimulate oil or gas to the surface. o MEG / Methanol to prevent Hydrate formation.
