3 Landscape Architect Image: 5 years for undergraduate degree (BLA) or 3 years for Masters degree (MLA) Prof. society ASLA, American Society of Landscape Architects Almost all states have a licensing process- not technically a landscape architect unless licensed Plan and design: parks, recreational facilities, private homes, campuses, and other open spaces Prepare site plans, specifications, cost estimates Coordinate the arrangement of existing and proposed land features and structures Analyze environmental reports on land conditions, such as drainage and energy usage Artistic and scientific principles to research, planning, design & mgmt of natural & built environments

4 Landscape Architect All landscape architects are focused on health, safety, and public welfare. Health: soothing, stimulating, control dust, noise, heat, wind, bad views, healing, exercise, etc. Safety: meeting safety standards for design, materials, furniture; creating safe places to live and play Public Welfare: universal access to facilities/amenities, preserving natural, cultural, historic resources, planning for growth Image:

5 Landscape Designer Image: Title often refers to a student or intern landscape architect without licensure Prof. soc. APLD, Association of Professional Landscape Designers No professional certification or educational requirements Plan and design: assist licensed LA or smaller scale projects, mainly single-family residential design Tend to have greater emphasis on plant material

6 Landscape Contractor Image: Install plant materials and hardscape Earthmoving, grading, paving, irrigation, carpentry, and more No specific educational requirements, license/cert. varies by state FNGLA's Certified Landscape Contractor (FCLC) program is the only standard for measuring the knowledge of practicing landscape contractors in Florida.

7 Design/Build Professional Image: Ushers a project from design to completion Deliver a project in which the design and construction services are contracted by a single entity known as the design builder or design build contractor. Single point of contact designed to speed up the schedule If there is a contract problem- it rests on the D/B professional May be a Landscape Architect, Architect, Landscape Contractor, etc.

10 Horticulturist Image: UF/IFAS Many degrees available- depends on job Specialize in growing different varieties of plant material, for scientific or botanical interest Propagate and cultivate to improve plant growth, yields, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses. Work as educators, gardeners, growers, therapists, designers, and technical advisors in the food and ornamental sectors of horticulture.

11 Nursery Professional Image: FNGLA, Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association Grows/propagates plants to usable size May sell directly to the public or wholesale Work is labor intensive and often seasonal Plant care requires observation, judgment and manual dexterity Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, transplanting, weeding, thinning, pruning, applying pesticides
