1 Lifelong Learning Sector (Distance Learning) Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE FE) Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) Greenwich Campus gre.ac.uk/education

2 Why study this programme? This programme leads to initial teaching qualifications for those who teach in further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, healthcare and community organisations, the public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations. The programme covers the skills needed for teaching and classroom management and helps students to explore the theory underpinning teaching and learning. The distance learning mode offers you the opportunity to study flexibly in your free time. You will be given study guides to work through and receive extra support via our virtual learning environment, where you can access course material and interact with tutors and other students. You will also be supported by a personal tutor throughout the programme. It may be possible to gain direct entry to the second year via accreditation of prior certificated or experiential learning Why study with us? The Department of Secondary Education, Lifelong Learning Teacher Education & Physical Education and Sport is part of the university s Faculty of Education & Health.

3 We offer a broad range of interrelated programmes across a variety of subject specialisms. These are designed for people who wish to develop their teaching capacities and professionalisms to teach older children and young and mature adults. The department exemplifies the very best practice in teaching and learning through interactive lectures and seminars, electronic media, peer learning, tutorials and a wide variety of resources. Our programmes of initial teacher education enable students to become professional, creative and reflective educators. We prepare our students to enter the teaching profession with enthusiasm and confidence. They are able to inspire, challenge and motivate their learners and to develop their own professional identity. We are proud of the pastoral care we provide, which supports our students in achieving their potential. Some students apply from unconventional backgrounds or have chosen to change career. We embrace the diversity and experience that these students can bring to our programmes. Partnership working is at the core of our ethos and values. This is because we recognise teaching and learning as a collaborative social process. Therefore, we are committed to pursuing collaborative teaching and learning partnerships in and between educational settings. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich (suug.co.uk) organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? Year 1 Professional Development Portfolio (0 credits) Theories of Learning, Behaviour and Inclusion (30 credits) Year 2 Policy and Curriculum Issues (30 credits) Research and Scholarship for the Development of Subject Specialist Expertise (30 credits) Professional Development Portfolio (30credits) Career opportunities This qualification is mapped to the national teaching standards for the sector and provides full professional recognition as a teacher/trainer. Teaching and assessment Attendance is not required for studying via the distance learning mode, although the study days we offer are highly recommended as they provide you with the opportunity to work with your tutor and other students. You will be assessed on your teaching ability (observations) and by coursework. You will be assessed on the quality of written assignments and also your classroom teaching. Your teaching will be observed on eight occasions and you will need to pass all courses. There are no examinations. Financial information For information on tuition fees and financial help, please visit gre.ac.uk/finance.
