5 Name: The Wonders of Wheat Wheat is in many of our favorite foods. Wheat is a grass. The farmer gets the soil ready with a tractor and a plow. It takes about 3 months for wheat to grow from seed to harvest. In early summer, the green wheat plants start to change color until they are a golden color by harvest. Farmers use a big tractor called a combine to harvest the stalks of wheat. The harvested wheat is kept in huge grain bins, until it is moved to the next stage, the mill. In the mill, the wheat is cleaned, separated, ground and made into flour. The flour is delivered to people who mix it with other ingredients and made into all kinds of foods we like to eat! 6 Name: The Wonders of Wheat! Wheat is part of our everyday life. Wheat gives us fiber for digestive health, carbohydrates for energy, vitamins and irons that help keep our bodies healthy. Most California wheat producers grow winter wheat. Wheat is an annual grass. The process of growing wheat starts with a tractor plowing the field to prepare the soil. Seeds are planted in the ground by a farm machine called a drill that is pulled by a tractor. The sun and the minerals in the soil help the wheat plants grow. As the wheat grows it looks like green grass. As the wheat develops or ripens it turns golden brown. A combine is used to cut the wheat stalk. It also does the threshing and separates the kernels from the rest of the plant. The threshed grain is stored in a bin on the machine. The bin is emptied into a grain truck and taken to the grain elevator. From the elevator, the wheat will be sold to be processed into food for humans or livestock feed. Wheat is ground into flour at a mill. The flour is then used to make foods, such as breads, cereals, tortillas, pasta and cookies. Wheat is grown in nearly every state. Because it is such a versatile crop, it is being harvested somewhere in the world every month of the year.
