1 Phonics Information Evening Tuesday 24 th September 2013

2 Why do we teach phonics? It is estimated that there are at least a half million words in the English language. So, we have a choice when it comes to teaching reading: emphasize memorization or teach phonics! When we emphasize memorization, we attempt to teach children to read by repeatedly exposing them to as many words as possible. Seeing words becomes the means by which they learn the words. This sight approach means that a child s success will be largely due to his or her ability to memorize and recall words instantly. When we emphasize phonics, we provide a reading foundation for each child that is based on the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Once a child learns the 26 letters with their 44 sounds and 70 common spellings, they have the tools they need to read words-- any words -- whether they have ever seen them or not.

3 How do we teach phonics? Synthetic phonics is a way of teaching reading. Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent so, they are taught that the letter m sounds like mmmm... when we say it. s a t p i n It is important to make pure sounds to enable children to blend effectively.

4 How do we teach phonics? Children can then start to read words by blending the sounds together to make a word. Blending To say the individual sounds that make up a word and blend them together to hear the whole word for reading e.g. s-a-t becomes sat. We say you blend to read and segment to spell. The children are encouraged to use their fred talk and fred fingers. Tricky words / Red Words Common words that are difficult to decode because some of the letters don t make the sounds you would expect, like the or said. Also high frequency words.

5 How do we teach phonics? Jolly Phonics Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are split into groups. Letter Sound Order The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible. It is at the end of each block of sounds that we introduce Fred Talk and Fred Fingers (part of the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc scheme).

6 How do we teach phonics? Meets the criteria for a high quality phonic programme Discrete, structured sessions daily Speed Sounds Read, Write Inc Fred Talk- a puppet who says, reads and spells words in pure sounds Green words- words made up of graphemes the children have been taught Red or tricky words- common words with an uncommon spelling e.g. said, would, bought

8 Other information. Pseudo-words / Nonsense Words / Alien Words Year 1 phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that we can track pupils until they are able to decode words. 40 words 20 real words 20 pseudo-words or nonsense words! Children must sound or blend these words Linked to an alien picture Picture provides a context for the pupil Why test this type of word? To check that children can blend and segment any word
