1 Using Desire2Learn s Survey Tool for In-Class Feedback The Survey tool in D2L can be used easily to gather in-class feedback, for planned feedback and for gathering feedback on-the-fl y. This helps to eliminate the need for counting hands or for the use of additional feedback devices, thereby reducing the number of items students must carry and the number of technologies that instructors must master. If you intend to use the survey tool, you must let students know that they should bring their laptops to class. Having their laptops in class will enable them to take part in the surveys that you distribute as part of the class. When you log in to your D2L course, click on the Course Materials menu link on your screen. When the menu opens, click on Surveys. In the Surveys area, click on the New Survey button. You may set up different categories of surveys if you wish to do so. If you have done this, choose the category for the survey. Unless you want reports on how individual students have voted, you should check the box to keep results anonymous. You may also include description and submission messages for students and also a page footer for the surveys. In the Restrictions area, you can set the survey to be Active or Inactive and set available dates. There should be no additional release conditions added to the surveys as these may make it harder for students to give quick responses. You can choose the response types, including unlimited responses until the survey is over, making the responses editable by the student, or by setting how many responses a student can give within the survey time. You may also give advanced availability of the survey to some students, if you wish to do so. University of Wisconsin-Stout

2 In the Reports Setup area, you can choose to create a report that will log the results of the survey. To do this, click on the Add Report button. In the window that opens, give the report a name and ensure that the report is available to you by checking the Instructor box in the Release Report To area. The reports on the survey responses can be delivered as HTML or CSV fi les. You may also choose others to whom the reports are released. After you have made your choices, click on the Save button. Keep in mind that a report is not necessary to view the results of a survey. In the Layout and Questions area, you can add questions for your survey. To do this, click on the Add/Edit Questions button. You may add many different types of questions by choosing a question type from the drop-down menu and clicking on the New button. If you have questions in the Question Library that you would like to use, you may import them. University of Wisconsin-Stout 2

3 Here, a multiple choice question is being added. The question can be named, the question text added, and an image fi le added. The question can also be given a description, enumeration, and a display style. Lower in the same page, there is also a section to enter question responses and feedback on the responses if you wish to add it. You may also increase the number of responses available. After editing, you can preview or save the question. You can save and copy the question, which is useful if you want to make several similar questions. You can also save the question and work on a new one of the same type by clicking the Save and New button. University of Wisconsin-Stout 3

4 If you decide that you want to share a report in class, be certain to create that report when you are constructing the survey. You may choose to share it only to yourself (Instructor) or to the students as well. After the students have taken the survey, you can create a report. If you have decided to give the students the ability, they may also create a report. Start by going to the survey list and clicking on Reports in the dropdown menu for your survey. When the Reports screen opens, click on the link for the report you created. In the window that opens, click on the Generate HTML Report button. After you click on the button, you will see the results of the survey. Students can see the report by following the same steps, but only if you have chosen to share it with them when setting up the report. University of Wisconsin-Stout 4

5 Tips on Using the Survey Tool for Feedback Use the Make Results Anonymous feature and inform students of your choice. This will help you get more valid feedback. If your computer is hooked to a projector, you can use it to show the results to the class, if you wish to do so. If you do not wish them to see the results, you may want to wait until after class and run a report. Give the students a specifi ed amount of time to complete the survey and close the survey when the time has elapsed. Create surveys in advance to save time whenever possible, but don t be afraid to make one onthe-fl y if the need arises. A survey given during class may be used as a starting point for discussion. Surveys cannot be tied to the gradebook. If you want students to answer questions that are tied to the gradebook, you must use the Quizzing feature. University of Wisconsin-Stout 5
