Allensbank Primary School Food and Fitness Policy This policy will be reviewed annually Head teacher: Chair of Governors:

Food and Fitness Policy Introduction In Allensbank Primary School we are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We believe that promoting and establishing life-long healthy eating patterns in our pupils, educating our pupils about different types of food in the context of a balanced diet and providing a whole range of purposeful physical activities is essential to each pupil s health and well-being. Schools can play a significant role in promoting healthy active lifestyles so that all pupils get a good start in life. Aims At Allensbank we work as a whole school community to achieve the following aims regarding food and fitness throughout the whole school: To improve the health of the whole school community by equipping pupils with ways to establish and maintain life-long active lifestyles and healthy eating habits. To ensure that food and nutrition and physical activity become integral to the overall value system of the school and a common thread of best practice runs through the curriculum, the school environment and community links. Objectives The Food and Fitness Policy is part of the school s on-going alignment with the Healthy Schools Programme. We shall work towards the following objectives: Promote healthy eating in school through other subjects/topics and a fruit only policy at break times. Promote a sustainable environment by exploring how food is produced, plants are grown and waste can be composted. To encourage children to develop appropriate skills for choosing and preparing healthy meals. To ensure the food provision in school reflects the ethical and medical requirements of all pupils and staff, e.g. religious, ethnic, vegetarian, medical and allergic needs. To encourage parents/carers who provide food and drink for consumption at school (packed lunches, snacks, etc.) to meet the same standards as food provided by the school. To ensure pupils are well nourished at school, and that every pupil has access to safe, tasty, and nutritious food and a safe, easily available water supply during the school day. To make the provision and consumption of food an enjoyable, social and safe experience for all. Raise the profile of physical activity throughout the school and raising awareness of its value for health. Provide safe and stimulating areas in which pupils can play and be active. Provide quality physical activity opportunities both within and outside the curriculum. Ensure pupils experiences of physical activity are positive and encourage participation beyond school.

Curriculum The School endeavours to implement the Food and Fitness Policy where it can within the formal curriculum. At present the main curriculum areas concerned with this are: 1. Design and Technology 2. Physical Education. 3. Science. 4. Personal and Social Education The school curriculum to ensure that it offers pupils: 1. An understanding of the relationship between food, physical activity and short and long term health benefits. 2. The acquisition of basic skills in purchasing, preparing and cooking food and an understanding of basic food hygiene. 3. Opportunities to learn about the growing and farming of food and its impact on the environment both in the classroom and outside in the countryside. 4. Consistent and clear delivery of the key messages for good oral health (supported by the school nurse). 5. A well planned PE and good use of opportunities for cross-curricular promotion of physical activity and its relationship to diet and nutrition. 6. An after school programme which includes a broad range of purposeful and enjoyable physical activities for pupils. Both curricular and extracurricular activities will help pupils develop an understanding of food issues, including: growing; hygiene and safety; preparation; nutrition; healthy lifestyles; and the food industries. Ethos and environment We recognise the significant impact of the informal curriculum on the social and emotional education of pupils as well as their physical health and well being. We have eye catching displays around the school promoting opportunities for sport and physical recreation. Facilities are improved and developed to promote increased participation in physical activity in consultation with pupils, staff and parents. E.g. discussing ways in which the playground or facilities could be improved to increase participation.

School Meals Allensbank Primary School offers a free Breakfast Club and daily lunchtime catering service to all its pupils. This is delivered by Cardiff County Council who is responsible for providing a school meals service. The school does not have any snack machines or soft drinks machines. Packed lunches We recognise that it is harder to have influence on children s packed lunches, but we encourage pupils and parents/ guardians to pack healthy and nutritious packed lunches. We send a leaflet/letter home to all parents/guardians explaining the importance of packing a healthy and nutritious packed lunch alongside ideas for healthier packed lunch options. Dining room environment At Allensbank we have a welcoming dining environment that encourages the social interaction of pupils. Posters are in the kitchen areas and serving areas which again promote healthy food and lifestyle. Displays are also to be found in other areas of the school. Break times At Allensbank, during morning break we only allow our pupils to eat fruit or vegetables. There is a healthy snack available for all children in Junior classes. All Foundation Phase classes receive a free carton of milk and have a healthy snack in class. Water provision All pupil s have access to fresh water during teaching and learning. Pupils have access to water fountains. Pupils are actively encouraged during the day to fill their water bottles. They also have access to water fountains. Dietary Requirements/ Moral and Medical needs Given all the above, within our policy we recognise that for some pupils, the above criteria will not always fit. We recognise that for some pupils there are both moral and medical reasons why certain foodstuffs may be in school. Some of these issues are outlined here: There may be medical reasons why certain foodstuffs should be available, or carried by a small number of students. For example, some pupils are allergic to certain foods (nuts, milk, wheat). Some pupils have already made decisions about their own food e.g. they may wish to be vegetarian or vegan. We recognise that pupils do have a choice about their food and drink intake, but we aim to encourage pupils to make a balanced decision about lifestyle, food and exercise.

After school clubs Physical activity is promoted during breaks and lunchtimes and pupils are encouraged to be more active at these times. All pupils are provided with opportunities to be physically active through after school clubs by offering a wide range of activities, e.g. football, netball. Travel Pupils, staff and parents/carers are encouraged to walk or cycle to school. Community The school values working in partnership with parents/carers and with the wider school community and sees it as an essential part of promoting healthy lifestyles. The school seeks to: raise awareness of, and promote, the activities and policy of the school around food and fitness in partnership with key community and health agencies; encourage the provision of healthy food and snacks from home through the curriculum, by giving information to parents, and in partnership with key community and health agencies; develop alliances and partnerships with local providers (e.g. sports clubs, leisure centres, shops, local business). Monitoring The achievement of the objectives and desired outcomes of this policy will be monitored, evaluated and reviewed by SLT annually.
