2 Without the support of parents this school will not continue to improve. For you to work with us to support your child s future it is important for you to know how our school functions. This booklet aims to do that, if it fails to do so then just ask! Lings Primary School is a one-form entry school and has classes from reception to year 6. There are approximately 210 pupils at the school and 25 members of staff. At Lings we are committed to providing your child with the best education possible. Our ethos is to develop the whole child and we aim to extend them in everyway possible. We want to make a difference to your child s life and to give them the opportunities and chances they deserve. We aim to do this in a safe and secure environment where every child is valued and supported. A high standard of behaviour and discipline is vital for the success of all at Lings and we aim to develop a pride and a love of our school. This booklet will take you through the key things that you need to know as a Lings Primary Parent and will give you the information that you need to support us in developing your child. There are a series of forms that you need to sign and return to school so that we can put these on your child s file. They explain what we need from you and what you can expect from us! Behaviour Every child at Lings is important to us but we will not allow the behaviour of a few to disrupt the education of the majority. If we have any difficulty with your child s behaviour we will phone you up immediately and invite you in for a meeting. We will look at how we can support you and your child in improving their attitude and will put routines in place for their success. We will celebrate good behaviour and congratulate those children that continue to follow our policy. Certificates, rewards, behaviour charts and stickers are just some of the ways we will thank your child for their excellent attitude. We have a time out zone at break and lunchtime where pupils will have to spend 5 to 20 minutes thinking about their behaviour and how they can improve further. This is time for them to reflect on what they have done and what they need to change. If a child is on the time out zone more than once in a week they will have to visit the Headteacher. Any fighting, aggression, racism or bullying will result in immediate referral to the Headteacher who will record the behaviour and contact parents. Please support this school in supporting your child s behaviour. If you have any concerns then share them with us and make us aware! We are here to help! Behaviour is non negotiable at Lings and we expect excellent behaviour from everyone at our school. We have a clear behaviour and discipline policy that can be viewed in full on our website. 2

3 What we teach, how we teach it and how we make it exciting is the reason we do our job! The school day starts at 9:00 am and all children need to be in class at this point. The side gates will open at 8:45 am to let your children in and will close at 9:00 am when school starts. After they are closed you need to come through the reception office to get in to the school. If your child attends the breakfast club or a morning club then they must come through the front reception office entrance. This maintains the safety of the building and allows us to be certain we know who is on site at all times. The school day ends at 3:15 pm and the side gates will open at 3:05 pm to allow parents to pick up their children. If your child is in an after school club you will need to pick them up at the main school office. Once again this maintains the safety of the school. All parents are invited to three assemblies within the week, all of these start at 2:45 pm and end at 3:15 pm. There is a Monday afternoon assembly and this assembly is run by the headteacher. We look at a half termly theme at these assemblies and discuss any areas that we need to develop as a group. On a Wednesday afternoon there is a class spotlight assembly and this is where children run the assembly, the timetable for these can be seen on the website. The Friday assembly is an achievement assembly and this is where we celebrate the hard work, dedication and success of our children, we end the week on a high! Your child will get a good diet of all subjects while at Lings Primary School. Music, Art, Drama and the Arts is as important to us as Literacy, Numeracy and Science. We know the importance of all subjects and we know that subjects can be combined to give your child relevance in their learning. The teaching of reading is vital in your child s success so we ask you to read with your child every night. Please record this reading time in their reading journal and share the enjoyment of books with them on a regular basis. Visiting the library and reading a range of books is key in developing their skills. We have a music teacher at Lings and every child has at least 30 minutes of music a week. Year 5 and 6 play in an orchestra organized by the Northampton Music School and we also provide peripatetic violin teaching for year 4 to year 6. We also have professional sports teachers through Back of the Net and a professional dance teacher who runs a club. We send year 5 and 6 to the Saints Study Centre to develop their education outside the classroom. Lings Primary runs a clubs system on a termly basis. Every child can sign up to a club they would like to attend and they will then receive confirmation if they have been accepted. Clubs fill up quickly so please make sure that you get your forms in as soon as possible. All clubs are free at Lings and we see it as a way of developing your child s interests and passions. We are committed to developing your child s learning outside the class and we try our best to arrange trips and visits to places of interest. Our new Lings mini bus will help us to do this more effectively and hopefully cut down the cost dramatically. 3

4 Home School Agreement As a pupil at Lings I aim to: Come to school regularly and on time. Keep the school tidy and show respect for the resources I use. Try my best at all times and produce work that I am proud of. Be polite and helpful to everyone I meet. Keep to the rules of the school at all times. Be safe and secure in all my actions and not cause anyone harm. 'Home is the first school for us all. Respect everyone, their faith, religion, race and gender. Report anything I think is wrong and tell others when I need support or help. Not use language or actions that could hurt other peoples feelings. Enjoy school as much as possible and get involved in as many events as I can. Take pride in my school and remember that I represent Lings wherever I go. Laugh, play, work, smile, care and give of my best. Set the standard! As a parent at Lings I aim to: Take a positive interest in my child's school life. Make the school aware of any concerns or problems that may affect my child's learning. Adopt and support the schools policy on behaviour. Ensure my child is at school regularly and on time, providing a letter when this is not the case. Support my child's learning by being involved in any homework / reading activities they may have on a regular basis. Talking to the teacher if I have any concerns whatsoever. Showing a respect for all that work within Lings Primary School and conducting myself correctly. Attending termly parent meetings. Try to make doctors / dentist appointment before or after school hours. Ensure early bedtimes and breakfasts are part of a regular routine. Provide my child with a school uniform / PE kit and making sure they are presentable when they arrive at school. Mark all clothing clearly so that it does not go missing. Make sure my child has a Physical Education kit on the day my child does P.E. Not take any holidays during term time without the authorization of the Headteacher. This could result in my child being taken off the school roll. Ensure my child takes part in Educational visits, which may require a small contribution at times. Keep the school informed about any changes of address, family circumstances etc. Work alongside the school if my child is in trouble or having difficulties with behaviour or learning. Allow my child permission to use the Internet to access learning. 4

5 At Lings Primary we aim to: Encourage a love of learning by praising success and effort. Ensure that your child has the opportunity to achieve his / her full potential as a valued member of the school community. Promote an ethos which supports and reflects the values, beliefs and practices of all cultures. Encourage your child to do their best at all times. Inform parents / carers of children's progress at regular meetings. Provide a happy, safe and supportive learning environment. Set high standards of work and behaviour by building positive relationships and encouraging responsibility. Encourage children to take care of their surroundings and others around them. Provide information about your child's curriculum at the beginning of every term. Ensure your child is safe within the school hours and during any after school clubs. Ensure your child is supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Be available to talk to parents if an appointment is made. Monitor the behaviour of each pupil closely and contacting parents if this behaviour starts to become a trend. Assess progress throughout their time at the school and to providing parents with copies of this assessment. Monitor the standard of work produced and inform parents if this work is below the expected school / national standards. Inform any parent if their child is on the Special Needs or gifted and talented register and what is being done to support them. Provide a high standard of learning and teaching at all times. What we need you to do. Please complete the home school agreement, sign and return to the class teacher. Please complete the data sheet and let us know your details so that we can update ours. Please give your child permission to use the internet at school by signing the agreement. Please let your child go on local trips and walks by signing the form. Please give your child permission to have their photograph taken to be used by the school. Please go on to our website as that is where all the information will be posted. Please come and ask if you need any help or support. Please support us in improving further and going from strength to strength. 5

6 The smooth and effective running of the school is down to everyone listening and following the rules of our school. If there is anything you are unsure about then please just ask us and we can provide the answers. School uniform Grey trousers or skirts with white polo shirt or collared shirt. School sweatshirt and black school shoes. Blue gingham summer dresses and grey shorts if you prefer. Please make sure your child looks neat and tidy, they represent our school! PE kit Blue or black shorts and a white T-shirt. If it is a cold they will need to wear a blue or black tracksuit, as we will still go outside! They will go barefoot inside and will need trainers for outdoor PE. Please do not buy plimsolls, as they won t be used! Jewelery We strongly advise that your child does not wear any jewelry to school. Only necklaces of religious significance may be worn and these must be taken off for PE. Earrings can only be small studs and once again these must be removed by the child during PE sessions. No nail varnish or make up is to be worn at any time! Food You can order a school dinner for your child through the office or you can provide a packed lunch. Please make sure that the packed lunch is a healthy lunch and that there are no bars of chocolate. They will need a drink and can bring a water bottle to school if they wish. All our school meals are now cooked on site by Nourish. General Children are not allowed to bring games, toys or consoles on site unless asked to by the teacher. They are also not allowed to bring money on site unless it is to pay for a trip or they have been asked to bring it in. No mobile phones will be allowed without permission from the Headteacher. 6
