1 Introduction to Islamic Art Saturday: November 8 th, 2014 Time 10:00am 5:00pm For information and registration contact: Intended as a general introduction to Islamic Art, this workshop draws upon examples from MIA s broad collection, which includes works from an area extending from southern Spain to Central Asia, and ranging in date from the seventh century up to the 19 th century. This all-day workshop will give participants a theoretical and practical introduction to Islamic Art. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Islamic Art: geometry, calligraphy, and biomorphic design (aka arabesque or islimi), as well as gilding. The day will start with an introductory talk about Islamic Art by one of our curators who will lead the group for a tour of MIA s Galleries. Back in the classroom, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to produce a lovely geometric rosette using only a compass and ruler. Geometry is an important and prominent field in Islamic Art, being found everywhere from mosques, to paper art, to textiles. Its study and refinement has been the work of centuries. Due to figurative art being discouraged in sacred contexts, geometry was (and is still) used in Islamic Art not only as a decorative form, but also as a sacred one.

2 The day will continue with an introduction to the art of Gilding. For centuries, artists have used gold leaf to illuminate and beautify Islamic manuscripts. Participants will get to experience the thrill of laying metal leaf on a surface of calligraphy and working it to reveal the final outline, but using a contemporary technique and mordant that allows the work to be done much more quickly and with greater ease then in the past. This session will also include discussion of these traditional techniques, which are still practiced today. The following portion of the day will introduce participants to what is considered by many to be the most important and pervasive element in Islamic art: Calligraphy. Considered the highest form of Islamic Art due to its association with the Muslim holy book(the Quran), the beautiful writing was extended to all Islamic art forms: secular manuscripts, inscriptions on palaces, as well as inscription on metalwork, pottery, stone, glass, wood, and textiles. Participants will learn about calligraphy tools and practice their use while trying one of the main scripts: Ruq ah. The intricate patterns of biomorphic ornament (arabesque/islimi), which often create the impression of unending repetitions, will be the focus of the last session of the day. These stylized floral patterns are a meeting of geometry and nature, bringing to mind gardens, flowers and vines whilst fitting easily and beautifully into more formal and less naturalistic designs. Using pencils, brushes and gouache participants will learn about this art form. Arabesque completes the trio of art that are often all found in the same place; it is very common for a single piece to include calligraphy, geometry and biomorphic in one seamless whole.

3 Day Schedule 10:00-10:15 Welcome 10:15-11:00 Introductory talk (Curator Galleries Tour) 11:00-11:15 Break 11:15-12:45 Islamic Geometry (Roya Souag) 12:45-1:30 Lunch 1:30-2:00 Gilding (Roya Souag) 2:00-3:00 Calligraphy (Diyala Zada) 3:00-3:15 Break 3:15-4:45 Biomorphic designs (Dr. Sabrina Puppin) 4:45-5:00 Questions, feed back, anything last minute
