To be accountable for student progress and development within the department. To develop and enhance the teaching practice of others. To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students, in accordance with the aims of the college and the curricular policies determined by the Governing Body. To be accountable for leading, managing and developing the relevant curriculum area. To manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within the department to effectively support departmental development plans. To represent the department at middle leader level. To make a significant contribution to college improvement through the role of middle leader. Reporting to: member of senior leadership team (currently Alan Russell) Responsible for: teaching staff, and teaching assistants within the department. Liaising with: SLT, Middle Leaders, Inclusion, and relevant staff with cross-curriculur responsibilities, partner schools, relevant non-teaching support staff, LA staff, and parents.

2 MAIN DUTIES Operational/ Strategic Planning To lead the development and review of resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in the department. To oversee day-to-day management, control and operation of course provision within the department, including effective deployment of staff and physical resources. To actively monitor and follow up student progress. To implement college policies and procedures, e.g. Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety. To work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans for the department which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the college. In conjunction with the ICT coordinator to foster and oversee the development of ICT within the department. To ensure that Health and Safety policies and practices, including risk assessments, are in-line with national requirements and are updated where necessary. To liaise with non teaching staff in the department, eg. TAs, to ensure their work supports and develops the department (eg, through book ordering). To prepare for Ofsted inspections, including preparing staff with the framework. To prepare the departmental development plan. To ensure the departmental areas and equipment are well kept. Curriculum To ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and costeffective curriculum programme which complements the College Improvement Plan and is mindful of both KS2 and KS4. To be accountable for the development and delivery of the curriculum at the college. To keep up to date with and respond to national developments in relevant subject areas as well as teaching practice and methodology.

3 Staff Development / Deployment of Staff: To work with the VP (staff and student development) to ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are designed to meet such needs. To be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of the department s support staff. To undertake performance management review(s) and to act as reviewer for identified staff, including where appropriate, non teaching staff. To make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent and have not set cover work, ensuring appropriate cover within the department, liaising with the cover supervisor/relevant staff to secure appropriate cover. To participate in the interview process for teaching posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff. To promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective working relations. To participate in the college s teacher training programme. To be responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within modern foreign languages and act as a positive role model. To pursue one s own professional development, with particular regard to performance management objectives. Quality Assurance: To ensure the setting of targets within the department and to work towards their achievement. To establish common standards of practice within the department and develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles. To check and approve reports by department members. To contribute to the college procedures for lesson observation. To seek/implement modification and improvement where required. To ensure that the department s quality procedures meet the requirements of self

4 evaluation and the college improvement plan. To produce an annual report to governors. To carry out robust monitoring and evaluation activities, including the use of data. To be accountable to SLT and governors for the work of the department in all its activities. Management Information: To analyse and evaluate, with the department, performance data provided and take appropriate action in response. To ensure the department is aware of, and adheres to, information and security procedures. Communications: To disseminate information from middle leader meetings and any other relevant meetings (e.g. organised by the LA). To ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with the parents of students (for example, when considering set changes for students). To liaise with partner colleges, higher education, industry, awarding bodies and other relevant external bodies. To represent the department s views and interests. To ensure meetings are inclusive, with agendas and minutes produced in a timely fashion. To take an active part in middle leader meetings and to serve on whole college working groups etc, as appropriate. To lead the department in developing the virtual learning environment (VLE). Marketing and Liaison: To contribute to the college liaison and marketing activities, e.g. the collection of material for press releases, the college website and newsletter.

5 To ensure the effective promotion of subjects on open evenings and other events. Management of Resources: To manage the available resources of staff, finance, space and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down; including deploying the department budget. To prepare an annual capitation bid, monitor and balance the modern foreign languages budget. To liaise, where appropriate, with the timetabler to ensure teaching commitments are effectively and efficiently time-tabled and roomed. Pastoral System: To ensure that good behaviour management is implemented in the department so that effective learning can take place. To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students within the department. To monitor students progress and performance, with the class teacher, in relation to targets set for each individual, ensuring that follow-up procedures are adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary. To contribute to springboard days and activity days at a level commensurate with a middle leader. To support members of staff in maintaining good order and discipline. Teaching: To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a main scale teacher. Other Duties: To play a full part in the life of the college community, to support its distinctive mission, ethos and policies and to encourage and ensure staff and students to follow this example.

6 To continue personal professional development as agreed. To engage actively in the performance review process. To comply with the college s Health and Safety policy and undertake risk assessments as appropriate. To undertake any other duty as specified by STPCB not mentioned in the above. To undertake supervision duties and assemblies as per the whole school rotas. To undertake the role of form tutor. Other Specific Duties particular to this role: To ensure there are regular international trips for students and that international links are developed. Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. Staff will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from a manager to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description Staff are expected to be courteous to colleagues and provide a welcoming environment to visitors and telephone callers. Has evidence of embracing literacy activities in their approach to teaching. Previous budgeting experience.
