1 Full Scholarships for Intensive Language Study at Middlebury Language School in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian Application materials must be postmarked by February 1, 2012 The Monterey Institute of International Studies is pleased to announce full fellowships including tuition, room, and board to attend Middlebury Language School, June August These fellowships offer students the opportunity to take advantage of the combined language and international study resources of the Monterey Institute and Middlebury College. To be eligible for fellowships, candidates must be admitted to a degree program in international policy, international business, or teaching foreign language, for fall In the sixth year of this program, these fellowships are made possible by a $1 million gift from Kathryn Davis to address today s critical need for more effective language proficiency. The award covers the cost of tuition, room, and board to attend the Middlebury summer Language School. Fellowship recipients will study Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Russian through the Language School s signature immersion model: No English Spoken Here. This intense study, equivalent to a full year of college-level language learning, will allow students to enhance language skills to meet enrollment prerequisites at the Monterey Institute for fall In establishing the Fellowships for Peace, philanthropist Kathryn Davis challenged Middlebury College and the Monterey Institute to use the institutions combined expertise in language acquisition, policy, and international business, to recruit and train future potential peacemakers. Announcing the program, Middlebury President Ronald Liebowitz stated, Mrs. Davis wants to improve the prospects for peace in the 21st century We thank her not only for her generosity but also for her sense of immediacy and urgency in bringing new ideas and new voices to serve the peace-building process. With this unusual offer of combined study, the Monterey Institute seeks individuals committed to rigorous language study, master s degree training, and professional skill development to address global issues of development, fair trade, international commerce, environmental preservation, nuclear nonproliferation, and other critical issues of our time. Fellowships for Peace recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic credentials, experience, and commitment to building a more peaceful world.

2 Languages of Study at Middlebury College s Language School Fellowships are offered only for the following languages and levels: Arabic beginning or intermediate Chinese (Mandarin) intermediate Japanese intermediate Russian intermediate Middlebury offers its programs at two locations: Middlebury, Vermont and at Mills College in Oakland, California. Students are placed in particular locations largely due to the languages and levels being offered in each location. The committee also considers where the student will likely make the most progress and have the best opportunity for success. Programs at the Monterey Institute of International Studies Fellowships are offered only for students admitted to one of the following master s programs: International Business (MBA) International Policy Studies (IPS) International Environmental Policy (IEP) Public Administration (MPA) Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (NPTS) Teaching Foreign Language (TFL) Fellowships are also available to candidates for our bachelor s degree program: Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) Qualifications By the time of enrollment at the Monterey Institute in fall 2012, students must demonstrate that they meet the language proficiency requirements for their program of study. MBA, IPS, IEP, MPA, NPTS, BAIS students are required to be at the following levels by the time of enrollment at the Monterey Institute: Arabic: Ready to begin studies at the second-year college level, minimum. Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Russian: Ready to begin studies at the third-year college level. Teaching Foreign Language students must be at the minimum fourth-year college level in their desired teaching language. One summer of intensive immersion language at the Middlebury Language School is the equivalent of one full year of college language study during the regular academic year. Students who successfully complete their summer studies with a grade of B or better at Middlebury should meet the Monterey Institute entry requirements. Applicants must submit an application for admission to the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Essay: applicants must submit a brief essay on the following: The Role of Language in Conflict Resolution The Davis Fellowships aim to fulfill the intention of philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis, who has dedicated much of her life to peace initiatives. As the cultivation of intercultural communication is essential to reducing conflict, the study of the world s critical languages has become increasingly important. In establishing these fellowships, Mrs. Davis challenges us to bring about a mindset of preparing for peace instead of preparing for war. Please include in your application a brief essay ( words) that reflects your past experience and future aspirations to contribute to more peaceful relationships between people, institutions, or communities. Highlight the role of language and language study in fostering those relationships and in helping to mediate conflict. All application materials must be postmarked by February 1, 2012 to the Monterey Institute of International Studies. How do I apply for this fellowship? A. In addition to applying for admission to a degree program at the Monterey Institute, applicants must also submit the application (one page) and an essay, words, on the role of language in conflict resolution. Q. What are the dates for the summer programs? A. Middlebury Language School in Vermont: June 22 August 12, 2012 Middlebury Language School at Mills College in California: June 15 August 10, 2012 Q. When will I know if I have been accepted to both programs? A. Applicants should be notified approximately 4-6 weeks after the February 1, deadline. Q. When do I have to pay my deposits to Middlebury and the Monterey Institute? A. A tuition deposit will be due to Middlebury within 2 weeks of accepting the Fellowship. The Monterey Institute requires a $500 tuition deposit to hold a place in a master s program and will be due after applicants are notified of their scholarship status.

5 Q. Why do I have to pay a tuition deposit to Middlebury if my expenses will be paid? A. Middlebury s language programs are competitive and selective. They need to be sure you plan to enroll or they will give the slot to another deserving candidate. Fellowship recipients will be reimbursed their deposit upon registration for their summer classes at Middlebury. Q. What if I want to attend the Middlebury Language School, but am not selected as a Fellowship for Peace recipient? A. Admission decisions about the Language School and the fellowship are made separately. If you are admitted to a Middlebury Language School, but not a Fellowship for Peace, you may still attend the Language School. If you are interested in receiving financial aid consideration for the Language School you must fill out a separate financial aid application Financial aid for the Language School is dispersed on a first-come-first-served basis and students should apply early for full consideration. The financial aid application will be available no later than December 1, Q. What if I am admitted to the Monterey Institute but am not selected as a Fellowship recipient? A. You may still enroll at the Monterey Institute as long as you meet the language component of the admission requirements prior to starting master s classes in fall Our Admissions staff can help you with solutions, including attending the Monterey Institute s Summer Intensive Language Program. Q. With this scholarship, can I enroll in 2013 instead of 2012? A. No. This scholarship is for the summer of 2012 at Middlebury College and starting at the Monterey Institute in a master s program in fall Q. Does this scholarship cover full costs for the Language School at Middlebury? A. It will cover tuition, room, and board. Students are responsible for their own travel and personal expenses. Q. Will I earn credit toward my Monterey Institute master s by studying language at Middlebury? A. Generally no. Most students will be studying a language in order to meet the Monterey Institute s prerequisite requirements for admission. Q. Can international students apply for the Kathryn Davis Fellowship? A. Yes, we encourage international students to apply to our Master s degree programs as well as the Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace.
