5 From the Rector It is my great pleasure to welcome you at the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) a technical research university with traditions in education dating back to the nineteenth century. It is a forward-thinking institution where high-quality education meets world-class research and innovation. Our priority is an interdisciplinary study programme supported by an advanced scientific research. Modern study programmes and an extensive range of scientific and research work, including partnerships with many universities, research institutions and high-tech industries guarantee that our graduates are well prepared to succeed in the labour market worldwide. In response to market demands, we offer a broad range of professional and technological programmes which prepare students for their future careers. 6 About Us WUT was officially established in 1915, but its tradition dates back to 1826, when it started its activity as Preparatory School for the Polytechnic Institute. Warsaw University of Technology is the oldest technical research university in Poland, ranked number one among all technical universities in the country. A guarantee of its success is its highly qualified staff, conducting research in almost all areas of technology and a number of non-technical disciplines (including management, business and administration) as well as the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, which make feasible the realization of a wide scope of studies and many different specializations of research. The activity of the University focuses on three main areas: education, scientific research and technology transfer. Our education and research profile covers the full spectrum of engineering disciplines from civil engineering and architecture, to biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Our educational offer is also complemented by economics, social sciences, management and administration. 4

8 Education System of Higher Education in Poland is divided into 3 main cycles undergraduate (leading to bachelor s degree), graduate (leading to master s degree) and doctoral (leading to doctoral degree) according to the Bologna Process. Students can also continue their tertiary education at postdiploma studies and in schools of higher education. During the course of studies, students collect ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) points. In order to complete the undergraduate studies, student must receive points, to complete graduate studies points are required. The points are also earned during foreign exchange programs, which allow students to receive education abroad. 6

12 Research Research activities conducted at the Warsaw University of Technology are mostly financed from the resources granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the European Union (FP6 and FP7), University s own resources and agreements with the industry and local authorities. Research at WUT is undertaken in theoretical and applied sciences within all of its organizational units as well as at the specially tailored Research Centres, such as: CePT the Centre of Preclinical Research and Technology (more than 120 research projects conducted in the fields of nanotechnology, molecular biotechnology, neurobiology, genomics, biomedical engineering, pharmacology) Research Centre for Functional Materials Research Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems Research Centre for Energy & Environmental Engineering. 10

14 Another example of the research activity at WUT is a wide offer of Ph.D. studies conducted at almost all faculties. Faculty Councils award approximately 200 Ph.D. and 30 Associate Professor degrees every year. A few years ago, WUT was awarded the title of one of three most pro-ph.d. student universities in Poland. Annually, the Ph.D. Students Board and the young scientists of WUT organize an international conference, which main aim is to support the cooperation between young scientists and to foster their scientific careers. Outcomes of the research conducted by WUT academic staff and students are published annually in over publications, including more than 500 papers in the journals of the Philadelphia list. They also result in the development of the state-of-the-art technologies, construction of new devices and research methods. Beside attending their regular academic classes, WUT supports its students in pursuing their scientific hobbies. Each faculty has its own student research societies, where students can, together with their peers, develop their interests by conducting research in various fields of science. There are 120 scientific circles at WUT. Every year our students and young researchers participate in international contests and competitions and are awarded numerous prizes and distinctions - such personal achievements may successfully help our students build up their labour market positions. 12

15 International Cooperation Warsaw University of Technology is vividly responding to changes in education, research and internationalisation, and through the understanding of the realities of today s world increase in global population and growing tendencies to enhance the society s prosperity, the University continuously uses its best endeavours to make its mark in the technological development worldwide. International partnerships, continuous quality improvement and a stronger profile these top priority areas are heavily emphasized and developed in order to enhance the position of WUT as a leading university of technology and attain its long-term goal internationalization and integration of political, economic and academic network. The international activity of the Warsaw University of Technology is organised and supported by the Centre for International Cooperation. Its task is to enhance the academic and scientific cooperation of the entire University with HEIs and industrial partners from all over the world, as well as to promote and facilitate the process of internationalization of WUT in accordance with the EU standards. The Centre is responsible for the coordination of: European research programs EU and international educational programs international grants bilateral and multilateral agreements with foreign institutions scholarships and internships for academic staff and students recruitment and registration of foreign students delegations and visits of representatives of international academia and industry. 13

16 The Centre is composed of 5 sub-units: Main Office manages the process of preparation and reviewing of international agreements and is responsible for the organization of official visits by international guests. University Contact Point for European Research Programs (UPK) deals with European Union Framework Research and Development Programs. University Agency for European Educational Programs (UAPE), is in charge of international educational programs, such as. e.g. LLP Erasmus, LLP Leonardo da Vinci, Erasmus Mundus, Tempus. Office for Academic Mobility (BWZ) deals with student and academic staff mobility. International Students Office (ISO) is in charge of the recruitment and registration procedures for international students, informative meetings, adaptation services and cultural events. Within a broad scope of international activities of the Centre for International Cooperation, conducted in collaboration with numerous foreign institutions, the Centre is also involved in a range of measures and schemes which promote the University abroad. The representatives of the Centre regularly attend international educational events taking place in China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey and more. Annual study visits to foreign HEIs also contribute to the enhancement of the internationalization of the University. Due to extensive professional and personal contacts established and maintained by the Centre for International Cooperation, as well as the membership in various international organizations and associations, the level of student and staff mobility is continuously increasing. Currently, a bigger number of students receive international scholarships. The website of the Centre regularly displays information on foreign exchange programmes, scholarship offers and various international activities addressed to the students and staff of WUT. 14

17 Each year, due to the initiative of the Centre for International Cooperation, WUT hosts a high number of visits by foreign delegations, which result in the establishment of significant partnerships and signing of collaboration agreements, and at the same time building a strong network of international contacts. Warsaw University of Technology puts special emphasis on its students and workers participation in international exchange programmes and internships, to make studies at WUT open doors to global labour markets. WUT offers a broad range of international and European exchange programmes for the students, teaching staff and researchers, such as: LLP Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus, Leonardo da Vinci and ATHENS (a one-week exchange session organized twice a year by a network of leading European technical universities). WUT holds over 30 active bilateral agreements focused on student exchange. In addition, our students can take part in summer exchange programs organized by many faculties, in cooperation with numerous foreign universities of technology. WUT s acclaimed reputation is proved by more than 120 international academic and research cooperation agreements with universities, research centres and hightech industries from 50 countries all around the world (with China, Russia and Japan topping the list). 15

18 Cooperation with Industry Warsaw University of Technology currently focuses on the university - industry cooperation. The main objective is to share knowledge, experience, good practices and entrepreneurial skills in the dissemination and transfer of technologies. We aim at exploring the opportunities for creation and consolidation of a regional network of technology transfer with main companies in Poland. There are several industry-sponsored initiatives and projects associated with the biggest national and international companies in our country. WUT partners are, among others: Pratt&Whitney, Siemens AG, LG Electronics., France Telecom, FIAT and many more. 16

19 Practical Guidelines for Applicants International Students Office (ISO) is responsible for recruitment and registration of international students. Application to studies is done online. All information about the enrolment is available at Entry requirements 1. Application documents: B. Sc. candidates Secondary School Leaving Certificate, at least 11 completed years of education. M. Sc. candidates B.Sc. diploma (or any other equivalent diploma). 2. Good knowledge of English (appropriate certification required). 3. High score in scientific subjects. Academic Year 1st semester: October January 2nd semester: February June Accommodation Most foreign students usually stay in student houses. Students may reside in one of our 12 dormitories. They can live in single, double or triple rooms or in apartments which consist of two or three rooms. They can use gyms, swimming pools, libraries, TV rooms, laundry and kitchens. The price for a room is approximately 100 Euro monthly. 17

20 Student Life Studying at Warsaw University of Technology is not only about hard work. WUT also offers exciting student life. At WUT, there are a number of various student organisations. They are responsible for cultural, sport and tourist activities. Thanks to them, studying at WUT is not just about going to lectures and learning. People who work there organise discos, parties, sport competitions, sailing or skiing camps and many other events. They also arrange courses or training programmes for the students. Students of Warsaw University of Technology can join international associations, such as BEST (Board of European Students of Technology), ESTIEM (European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management), EUROAVIA (European Association of Aerospace Students), IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience), IACES (International Association of Civil Engineering Students) and many others. Students also attend physical education classes and can do different sports. College of Physical Education and Sport of WUT offers a broad selection of sports disciplines, i.e. basketball, volleyball, football, swimming, judo, table tennis and skiing. Warsaw University of Technology has its own Folk Music and Dance Group, Music Band and Academic Choir. 18

21 Since 2008, the Centre for International Cooperation has been carrying out Task 39 within the Warsaw University of Technology Development Programme. The overall aim of the Task is the enhancement of the international education offer according to the European development strategy. The task of the Centre for International Cooperation is to support WUT Faculties in the process of internationalization, especially within the establishment of study programmes in English, promote the education at the University abroad, recruit higher number of international students and improve the quality of recruitment services. 19
