Qualifications for Worship Psalm 24

Questions in Contemporary Worship What is Worship? How do We Worship? How do we Prepare for Worship?

1 The earth is the LORD s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2 for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.

5 They will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God their Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob. Psalm 24:1-6

An Interpretive Question: How have Christians applied this passage historically to the business of worship in the church when believers gather?

Let s Look at some Worship The Catholic Mass Lutheran Order of Worship Presbyterian Book of Common Worship The Armed Forces Hymnal Baptist Order of Worship Alliance Pastor s Manual

The Catholic [Western Rite] Mass 1. Gathering 2. Proclaiming and Hearing the Word 3. The Prayers of the People 4. The Peace 5. The Celebration of the Eucharist 6. Dismissal

Catholic Mass: Gathering a) A Trinitarian-based Greeting b) General Confession & Absolution c) The Kyrie d) Singing of Gloria in Excelsis Deo e) Collect [Prayer] of the Day

General Confession & Absolution Priest: As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of Christ's love, let us acknowledge our failures and ask the Lord for pardon and strength. Priest: Lord, we have sinned against you: Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy. Priest: Lord, show us your mercy and love. All: And grant us your salvation. Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. All: Amen.

The Kyrie [Latin for Lord ] Priest: Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy. Priest: Christ, have mercy. All: Christ, have mercy. Priest: Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy.

The Gloria All: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Lutheran Confession Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Congregation: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (moment of silence for personal examination)

Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of your Holy Name. Amen.

Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Presbyterian Worship (1906) The Doxology Call to Worship [Scripture Sentence] Invocation Confession of Sins Assurance of Pardon Psalter Scripture Readings Hymn of Praise Apostles Creed General & Lord s Prayer The Offering Prayer of Dedication Hymn Sermon Hymn Closing Prayer Benediction

The [Presbyterian] Confession of Sins MOST holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess in Your presence our sinful nature which is prone to evil and slothful in good and all our shortcomings and offenses against You. You alone know how often we have sinned - in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love. But You, O Lord, have pity upon us who are ashamed and sorry for all the ways in which we have displeased You

Teach us to hate our errors. Cleanse us from our secret faults. Forgive our sins for the sake of Your dear Son, our Savior. And O most holy and loving Father, send Your purifying grace into our hearts, so that we may from now on live in Your light and walk in Your ways according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon Almighty God, who doth freely pardon all who repent and turn to Him, now fulfill in every contrite heart the promise of redeeming grace; remitting all our sins, and cleansing us from an evil conscience, through the perfect sacrifice of Christ our Lord; and keep us evermore in the peace and joy of a holy life, that we may love and serve Him always; in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The General Confession [1789/1863] ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou O Lord have mercy upon us, miserable offenders Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. Book of Common Prayer

Bottom Line: 1. Corporate, public confession of sin has disappeared from most Evangelical worship, to include the Alliance. 2. We work from the dangerous assumption that we do not need to be reminded of our sins. 3. We act like we do not need to deal with our sins before we worship God. 4. Our worship, in this important sense, is both less biblical and less effective.
