1 University Teachers Innovative Quality and Its Cultivation ZHANG Kaihong Higher Education Research Institute, Henan Polytechnic University, P.R.China, Abstract: As the soul of a nation's progress, innovation reflects the characteristics of the time and the necessity of the educational reform. The time of knowledge-based economy should be based on the culture of innovative talents; the cultivation of innovative talents relies on the innovative education which is implemented by the innovative teachers. On the basis of illustrating the in-depth and the fundamental quality of the innovative teachers, this thesis puts forwards the approaches to develop innovative teachers. Keywords: knowledge-based economy, innovating education, innovative teachers The innovative time requires innovative talents and the innovative talents require innovative teachers. Only the teachers who are high qualified and knowledgeable are able to teach student how to study, how to do research and how to solve problems, promoting the improvement of students comprehensive quality. Only the teachers who know the latest achievement of high and new technology are able to see from the point of high-tech revolution, encouraging students to explore bravely. Only the teachers who are with innovative consciousness and ability are able to implement heuristic education, culturing students innovative ability. The innovative consciousness, innovative ability and innovative personality of teachers straightly affected the cultivation effect of innovative talents. 1. To possess innovative quality is the responsibility of university teachers and also the requirement of the time Universities are fundamental in promoting the development of knowledge economy for they baring the important task of cultivating senior talents, developing science and culture and promoting socialist modernization. So it is necessary that universities carry on innovative education, cultivating high quality talents for the establishment of national innovative system and the implementation of sustainable development strategy. The function of university teachers is changing. Firstly, their fundamental task is cultivating senior special talents who plays key role in the development of science and technology. So the teachers have to study profound knowledge, introduce the new achievements of human culture and take the responsibility of cultivating innovative talents. Secondly, they not only bare the traditional function of conveying knowledge but also are required to be able to be internationally socialized. Thirdly, besides organizing teaching activities and participating research, university teachers participate social activities as specialists and scholars and become consular of social decision making and introducer of transferring technology to production [1]. As the function extension of higher education, university teachers are required to be accompanist from soloist at class, to be wisdom explorer from knowledge disseminator, to be introducer and cooperator from pure introducer and to be innovator from knowledge producer. So only university teachers possess the quality of innovation, they can bare the responsibility of culturing innovative talents. 2. The concrete contents of innovative quality for university teachers 2.1 To be knowledgeable Firstly, university teachers should be knowledgeable. From ancient times till now, the premier task of teachers is introducing knowledge, so to be professionally knowledgeable is the first requirement for them. Secondly, they have to possess professional front knowledge. They have to teach students the 405

2 knowledge of professional front, discovering new phenomenon, offering new thoughts and carrying on new research on the basis of multi-subjects intersection [2]. Thirdly, university teachers should possess the knowledge of psychology, carry on psychological education to students and teach them according to their aptitude, encourage them to develop according to their characters. Fourthly, university teachers are required to be able to communicate with foreign language. Economic globalization and sci-tech internationalization are becoming the feature of the time. Everyone have to face the international environment in which the competition is becoming more and more fierce and the communication is becoming more and more frequent. To adapt to the teaching development of nowadays, university teachers should possess the ability of communicating with foreign language. 2.2 The ability of modern teaching Firstly, university teachers are required to possess the ability of innovation. Innovation is today s symbol of outstanding talents, only the ones who are able to innovate can make some achievements to promote the development of the society. This requires university teachers to be innovative to introduce and culture their students [3]. Secondly, they are required to be able to apply suitable teaching methods. University teachers should possess the ability to adapt different teaching forms, teaching strategies and teaching methods according to the different teaching contents and characters of students. Fourthly, they should possess modern teaching technology. To adapt to the development of the information era, university teachers must possess advanced teaching technology. They must be able to combine teaching, information technology and modern teaching technology together to improve their teaching ability. 2.3 Innovative characters To adapt to the needs of talent culturing for social development, university teachers nowadays must have strong desire to learn, strong determine to reform and be active in innovation. Facing students with different characters, the problems in teaching which university teachers confronting are different. Only the ones with innovative characters can better cultivate innovative talents in the coming study-oriented society [4]. 2.4 Noble moralities University teachers must be with noble professional morality and good spiritual realm. Their idea, attitudes towards life, value orientation and morality will have a far-reaching impact on students. In teaching activity, teachers with charm and multi-good-moralities make students trust and respect them. They are able to make the teaching activity be equal, cooperative and harmonious and arouse students sympathy and then fire passion of their study and innovation. 2.5 The ability of innovative teaching The ability of university teachers includes many, such as research ability, organizing and management ability, operation ability, educating foreseeing ability and expression ability. All of the abilities turn out to be a teacher s comprehensive quality. To make the most of these abilities, university teachers must carry on innovative teaching. This means they have to design the best teaching plan according to the teaching targets, contents and requirements on the basis of innovatively using their knowledge and experience to achieve the best teaching effect. The features of traditional education are fogyism and recurrence, while of future education the features are meeting the emergency and innovation [5]. So a teacher who is keeping ideologism and lacking innovation, afraid of reformation is hardly culture innovative talents to meet the needs of future society. 2.6 The ability of teaching and research One of the most important things to culture innovative talents for universities is introducing scientific research into teaching activity. To realize this goal, besides possessing professional knowledge, university teachers have to continuously learn the theory of higher pedagogy, higher education psychology and etc., study how to apply them into teaching and search for the effective methods of innovative idea cultivation. The ability teaching and research is the embodiment of the teachers 406

3 continuous study, research, enterprising and innovation. Only the teachers with innovation ability can culture students innovation idea and improving their ability of doing research. 2.7 The ability of applying modern education technology The prevalence and development of the net bring new chance for improving teaching efficiency. Education informatization will make multimedia textbook, the globalization of education resource, the personalization of teaching, the autonomy-orientation of study, the cooperation of educating and teaching, the automation of education management and the virtualization of teaching environment come true. Introducing modern information technology into class will open up a new prospect for education reformation and greatly promote the innovation and development of education. As the symbol of human civilization and culture, university teachers should not only apply information technology into teaching but also be the main disseminator of computer culture to realize the perfect combination of information and education progress, making it to be the organic compound of teaching and thus making modern education technology and the renewal of education idea, the reformation of teaching content and methods functioning mutually. 3. The basic way to improve innovation quality of university teachers Many factors affect the quality improvement of university teachers. There are global elements, local elements and human elements. To continuously improve their quality, besides the endeavor of the teachers, universities and the whole society should cooperate together to create a good exotic environment for them. 3.1 Promote the idea renewal and deepen educational reformation to systemly guarantee the quality improvement of university teachers Relative departments should adopt multiple measures to make the whole society fully notice the significance of improving the innovation quality of university teachers. The measures include keeping educational reformation, consummating educational management system, fulfilling relative measures of educational system reformation, further carrying on the reformation of teacher management, teaching management and teaching method. 3.2 Finance in various ways and invest more to materially guarantee the quality improvement of university teachers The building pace of educational investment system with main part from government and the other from various ways should be accelerating. Reforming allocation mode, improving schooling condition, putting more financial investment, giving more support to the scientific research, optimizing hardware provision which is for the growth of innovative teachers, continuing improving the teachers treatment, releasing their work pressures and getting them putting all their effort in innovation with no fear of trouble in the rear. 3.3 Reform personnel system, optimize the organization of the faculty and outstand the innovative talents Turn university teachers lifelong tenure which is closed into mobility mode which is competitive. Elevate the teachers degree level and make the teachers with master degree taking an appropriate proportion of the whole faculty. Limit the number of teachers who are graduated from own university to reducing the disadvantages of inbreeding which does no good for the creation of innovative atmosphere. Seize the chance, make relative policies. Introduce excellent students abroad of high quality, actively learn the advanced experience of foreign countries to raise the vigor of the teacher team. Encourage the teachers who make innovative achievements of teaching and research in time to build the encouragement system of universities. 3.4 Grasp further education, strengthen university teachers training, form various training mode 407

4 for improving the quality of innovative teachers Teacher s training is a successive process. It includes pre-job training, vocational training and on-the-job training. The nation should run normal university well and cultivate teachers with high quality who can take the load of innovative education. Special training institution should be established to carry on training of teacher s morality, teaching ability and operation level. Build a team of elite teachers to carry on innovative education. Teachers in different universities could know the newest developments of their major, build rational multiple frame of knowledge and discuss teaching methods to continuously improve their macro-quality by the way of self-study, seminars, training, advanced studies, visit, mutual visit of scholars and etc Enhance university teachers occupational ethics construction, culture their good individual characters and improve their ideological and moral qualities To enhance the morality construction of the teachers, universities should induct them to build a scientific world outlook and outlook on life, contribute selflessly, exploit and innovate through regular spin control, making relative bylaws, and be loyal to their career etc.. Only through this way can help teachers to be the model of students and let them know the value of innovation. 3.6 Enhance scientific research of education and reformation of teaching method to make university teachers possess the art of innovative education Chinese universities have stressed on spoon-feeding education for a long time, seldom encourage students to probe into problem and excessively purchase the oneness of talent cultivation. This affects the performance of students innovation. Universities should enhance scientific research, exploit new teaching methods for innovation, change the way of imparting knowledge, notice the diversity of talent development, call for appropriate education for different students and pay attention to culture students innovation awareness and ability during imparting knowledge. 3.7 Let a hundred schools of thought strive, encourage academic innovation and create a good atmosphere for the growth of innovative teachers A good atmosphere for the improvement of the teachers innovative ability should be formed in campus. Leaders of universities should keep the spirits of emancipating the mind, seeking truth from facts, continuously enhancing innovative awareness, respecting teachers autonomy of selecting teaching methods, supporting and encouraging academic innovation. On the other hand, scientific and democratic management system should be established to create a free and harmonious collective atmosphere for the teachers to fully exert their innovation ability. 3.8 Perfect the appraisal system and stress on innovation ability to form a scientific appraisal mechanism of university teachers The appraisal system not only plays the role of checking the quality of a teacher s past teaching activity but also the orientation for the future. The past appraisal mode which is simplex, absolute and static should be changed into the mode which is multiplexed, plural and dynamic. The latter pays attention to the importance of teachers innovation. This mode could fully display the value of innovative teaching by abandoning the old appraisal criteria through students exam degrees. It is a work which should be attached much importance to and grasped with no relax that various effective measures should be adopted to elevate university teachers quality to make them take the load of culturing innovative talents and guaranteeing the talents provision for the construction of moderately prosperous society.
