The following packet contains some general tips about auditioning, information about the show including character breakdowns, and information about backstage positions. PRODUCTION TEAM Production Director: Mr. Klimzak Musical Director: Mr. Clark Choreographer: Ms. Kyle Baker Band Director: Mr. Scheele Pianist: Mrs. Scheele Set Construction Adviser: Mr. Racas Scenic Painting Adviser: Ms. Becky Tym MOST ASKED QUESTIONS What is ANNIE GET YOUR GUN? ANNIE GET YOUR GUN is a musical comedy written by Irving Berlin. Irving Berlin was famous for writing catchy popular songs (White Christmas, There s No Business Like Show Business, Alexander s Ragtime Band). This musical features many of his popular songs set to the historical story of Annie Oakley and how she went from a poor country girl to the star of Buffalo Bill s Wild West Show. Annie Oakley was a famous sharpshooter and became the first American women to become a superstar. The story follows her rise to fame along with how she fell in love with fellow sharpshooter/wild West Show star Frank Butler. Most of the characters are historical figures or typical Western types (cowboys, cowgirls, saloon dance hall girls, Native Americans, railroad engineers, society dames, etc.), all comically portrayed. The story is set in Buffalo Bill s Wild West Show as it played various towns in the Midwest during the late 1800s, with all the characters acting as members of the Wild West Show as the present the famous love story of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler.
2 Is participation by audition only? Yes. If you want to be cast in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN you must attend the auditions. First, sign up for a Vocal Audition slot and the Dance Audition roster. A sign up sheet will be available on the Drama Club Board (just outside the band room). Vocal Auditions are September 8 or 9. The Dance Audition is on Tuesday, September 15. Auditions are used to place students in roles, either principal or ensemble roles. Students should think of the audition as a special workshop or class. If you don t sing, please see Mr. Klimzak in the Library about what to do at your vocal audition. To be on the crew, you must complete a Crew Application Form and attend the Crew Sign Up Forum on Friday, September 11. For more information on crews, check out the section on Crew Positions. VOCAL AUDITIONS What do I need to do during my time slot at the Vocal Audition? Vocal Auditions are September 8 and 9. Students will be asked to sing a short song. The song can be one of our suggested songs from the show or a song of your choice, preferably something upbeat. Musical accompaniment will be provided for the suggested show songs. If you are singing your own material, it is your responsibility to provide the musical accompaniment (karaoke tracks via CD, flip drive, or internet link.) We ask that songs be memorized. This should be fun. It s a chance to pretend to be someone else. What should I wear to Vocal Audition? Your audition is your introduction to the Production Team, so you want to look your best. Maybe a dress or nice outfit for girls; dress pants and tucked-in, button-down dress shirt for boys; nice shoes for both. Overall, wear something that makes you feel good about yourself. If you feel good and confident, your audition will be good and confident. Do I have to be at the Vocal Audition the entire time? No. Students will need to sign up for an audition slot. Slots will be a five minute, closed session with the Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, and other Production Staff members. An audition sign up sheet will be posted on the Drama Club Board a week before auditions. DANCE AUDITION Do I need to attend the Dance Audition? Yes. Everyone that auditions will need attend the Dance Audition on Tuesday, September 15 from 3:30pm-5:30pm. Don t think of it as dancing. Think of it as moving. The choreographer wants to see how people move. Some characters have to be strong dancers while others need to only be able to do simple movements. That s what this process is all about. What should I wear to the Dance Audition? Students should wear something comfortable to move in, like sweat pants or athletic shorts. If you have dance or character shoes, wear them. If you don t, please wear a flat shoe or dress shoe. In any case, it is important to wear shoes. No bare feet, no socks, no flip flops.
3 Do I have to be at the Dance Audition the entire time? Yes. The audition is 2 hours long. We are learning a dance routine that will most likely be used in the show. Plus, we may ask you to do something else at the audition, such as read for a specific part, see how you pair up with others, etc. CALLBACK AUDITION Do I need to attend the Callback Audition? No. Only if you are asked to attend the Callback Audition. Those asked to that audition are the individuals that are being considered for one of the speaking roles in the show. There will be more singing and some reading from the script. Dress as you would dress for the Vocal Auditions. The Callback Audition is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. If you are called back, it is expected for you to be there for the entire 3-hour audition. If you have a conflict with this, please see Mr. Klimzak. YOUNG PERFORMER AUDITIONS Annie s younger sisters and brother will be young performers cast outside of the high school with students from our feeder schools. Auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 8 from 5:30pm-7:00pm. All students should arrive at 5:30pm where they will be taught the vocal music to There s No Business Like Show Business. We will then listen to students sing individually, learn a simple dance combination, and perhaps read some scenes from the script. How old do you have to be to audition for one of the Young Performer roles? To audition for one of these roles, you must be enrolled in either grades 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 in one of the CHS feeder school districts. What should I wear to the auditions? Follow the rules of what to wear to the Vocal Auditions (as listed above). Do Young Performers have to attend the Dance Audition? No. We will teach a short movement combination at the September 8 audition. If students have dance shoes, they should bring them. Otherwise please wear flat shoes or dress shoes. No bare feet, no socks, no flip flops. Do Young Performers have to attend the Callback Audition on Wednesday, September 16? Students only need to attend this audition if they are asked to attend. Students will know if they need to attend shortly after their initial audition on September 8. REHEARSALS What time are rehearsals? The show will rehearse Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4pm-7pm and Fridays from 3pm-6pm. There are four Saturday rehearsals from 1pm-5pm (see rehearsal schedule).
4 Do I have to be at rehearsals every night? No. The cast will be divided into groups. The groups will determine rehearsal nights. Most groups will probably have 2-3 nights per week that they will be needed. Some cast members will be called more than other based on their roles and the material that character has, and it is assumed that principal roles will be needed more than ensemble members. Starting in November, all groups will be required for all called rehearsal times. In any case, every rehearsal is important and attendance is mandatory and expected; only conflicts reported by September 22 will be excused. CREW POSTIONS If I want to work behind the scenes, what should I do? Students interested in working behind the scenes, should attend the Crew Sign Up Forum on Friday, September 11 from 3:00pm-4:30pm. What will happen at the Crew Sign Up Forum? At the Forum, we will collect crew application forms, discuss the production needs of the musical, take a tour of our backstage areas, and have a short interview with Mr. Klimzak. Students attending the Forum should expect to be there for the entire 90-minute block. Can I still be assigned to a crew if I miss the Crew Sign Up Forum? Yes, but it will be your responsibility to turn in all necessary materials and to find a time to meet with Mr. Klimzak for an interview. How are students assigned to a crew? Crew assignments are based on several factors including past experiences, dedication to past productions, skills and talents, and conflicts. Placement is upon the discretion of the director. For the type of crew positions available, please check out the Crew Positions Descriptions. Do students assigned to crew have to attend all rehearsals? Rehearsal time and commitment is different for each individual crew. Most crews meet at least 2-3 days per week. Some crews meet more often during the early part of the rehearsal process; other crews meet more often during the later part of the rehearsal process. Once the show is cast, a more detailed crew schedule will be made available. In any case, every rehearsal is important and attendance is mandatory and expected; only conflicts reported by September 22 will be excused. For more information on auditions and crews: Contact Mr. Klimzak at mklimzak@westosha.k12.wi.us.
