Department of Justice Sciences: Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Criminal Justice Minor Legal Affairs Minor Forensic Psychology Minor Criminal Justice Honors Program Legal Affairs Program Master of Science in Criminal Justice Master of Science in Forensic Science Certificate Program in Computer Forensics

Evolution of a Capstone for Justice Science students Internship program started in the 1980 s as an elective-loosely supervised with minimal requirements. Students needed a mechanism for bridging the gap between theory and practice-a culminating experience. Students graduating without an internship struggled to find employment in a field saturated with great opportunities. Consensus among faculty was to make internship required.

Everything changed in Fall 2006! Beginning in August 2006 any students who declared a CJ major were required to Intern. For Graduate students on the practitioner track, internship is required as of Fall The positive attitude from faculty about the change in requirement made the transition from an elective internship to a required internship a welcomed and exciting experience for everyone. The internship was the natural fit for the culminating Capstone experience

The only constant about our Internship/Capstone has been CHANGE! Before the internship became required, students perceived it as an easy A Once the internship became required and the expectations were raised, the easy reputation began to diminish. Now, students have a fully integrated experience that combines their knowledge of the field with practice. The easy reputation is gone!

Where do students intern? Jefferson & Shelby County Sheriff s Departments Hoover Police Department Federal Agencies such as U.S. Postal Inspectors, FBI, U.S. Marshal s Service, Secret Service, U.S. Courts and Probation ABI and State Department of Public Safety Security Engineers Naval Criminal Investigation Services Numerous private attorneys and local judges

How do we place students in a CJ related agency? Completion of application and related paperwork and submitted by appropriate deadlines. Internship to be completed in the final 30 hours of coursework. Internship Coordinator meets individually with every student to discuss career goals and possible placements. Then, student and Coordinator follow-through processes to make placement arrangements

Requirements of Internship/Capstone: For 3 hours of credit, 120 hours For 6 hours of credit, 240 hours Bi-weekly or Tri-weekly reports that meet QEP requirements Attendance at 2 Career Services workshops- Interview Skills and Resume Writing Take Exit Exam for all CJ majors Complete an Exit Survey Agency evaluation of student is 50% of grade Submission Resume, Cover Letter and THANK YOU letter.

How we evaluate writing literacy in each journal: Each journal should demonstrate proper writing, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.(wl:2.4) Each question has been assigned a point value. Points will be deducted for grammar errors, unanswered questions or insufficient answers. During this journal period, what have you learned in practice that you did not learn in the classroom? 2 points (WL:2.1)

Writing literacy continued: Based upon a specific experience or observation, describe a situation and apply a theoretical explanation for the behavior you observed in either a client or practitioner. (e.g. social control theory, broken windows, neutralization theory, rational choice etc.) 2 points (WL:2.1) Describe an instance when agency personnel had to make a decision that was either consistent or inconsistent with a regulation, statute or constitutional protection you learned about in your classroom experience. 2 points (WL:2.1) matrix_template.pdf

How do we measure Quantitative Literacy In order to properly record the time you spend interning, you will construct a table that categorizes your various intern activities (administrative duties, interaction with agency clients, routine job duties, and interaction with other agency personnel). You will create a frequency table that will summarize and compute the amount and percent time engaged in each activity during the journal period. (See Appendix A) You will use the same excel file throughout the semester, simply adding and labeling a new sheet within the file for each journal period. At the end of each sheet you will convert the frequency tables into an excel data set. At the end of the semester you will use this data set to calculate summary statistics that will graphically display (i.e. bar chart) the percent time and total time you spent in each of the 4 categories. 4 points (See appendix A for details and a sample table.) (QL:3.2 and 3.1)

Quantitative Literacy cont.: Write a one paragraph interpretation of the frequency table. This interpretation should include a comparison of the four categories of activities. Explain what you learned from your activities in this journal period. At the end of the semester, you will write a one page summary report addressed to your supervisor. This report will include narrative of what you learned about the Criminal Justice field while interning. You will interpret your bar chart and make comparisons between the four categories. 2 points (QL:3.6, 3.2) 2QL_matrix_template.pdf

How do we measure Ethics and Civic Responsibility? Explain in detail an instance when you observed agency personnel make a decision that demonstrated integrity, honesty or adherence to policy despite personal opinion or preference. 2 points (ECR:4.1) Based on your observations of the agency s role in society, what community issue could be addressed via a local volunteer organization that would solve a problem or meet a local need? 2 points (ECR:4.3) atrix_template.pdf

Changes for the future will include the following: Placements in Private Security Advanced placements for Pre-Law students Advanced placements for Computer Forensics students-cs and JS collaborations continue Refinements to our core classes to be sure students are prepared for the capstone including the quantitative piece
