2011 Census: Population Characteristics, Households, Marital Status, Family Composition, Dwelling Types and Languages Introduction On May 9, 2011, Statistics Canada conducted the 2011 Census. This report summarizes data released for the city of Ottawa, makes comparisons to previous Censuses, and provides information for the following areas; City-wide, Inside the Greenbelt, Outside the Greenbelt, the Rural area, and Ward. Further analysis will be provided as new data becomes available from the National Household Survey (NHS). Population The 2011 Census reported Ottawa s population at 883,390, an increase of 8.8% or 71,260 people from 812,130 in the 2006 Census. Population grew in all major areas of the city; inside the Greenbelt rose by 4.7%, urban areas outside the Greenbelt increased 16.8%, and the rural area grew 7.6%. (As noted in other reports 1, the census undercounts the city s actual population. However, the census is the only source for socio-economic data such as household and family make-up, language, and other measures.) Population by Age The most significant city-wide change was the growth of older age groups. People 65 and over increased 16%, but those 60 to 64 the leading edge of the post-war baby boom had the highest growth at 34%. This group was followed by people 65-69, with 28% growth since Over 60% of total city-wide population growth was among people 50 and over. Children (5 to 14) increased only 1% since 2006 in Ottawa. However, the number of children under five increased 11% between 2006 and Inside the Greenbelt, the population 65 and over increased by a relatively modest 6%, as population aging shifted to the outer areas of the city. The highest growth was in the group, up 26% during Other high-growth groups were (+15%) and 85+ (up 17%). Some groups declined, including children 5 to 14 (down 8% since 2006) and people 35 to 44 (part the baby bust ), down 11%. Outside the Greenbelt, population aging was significant, with people 65 and over increasing 48% between 2006 and The highest percentage growth of any cohort was ages 65-69, up 58%. This was followed closely by people and 85+, growing 56% and 52% respectively. During , 43% of population growth outside the Greenbelt was among people 50 and older. In the rural area, all net population growth since 2006 was among people 50 and older. Those 65+ increased 31%, and the 85+ group by 37%. People aged 30 to 44 declined in number, as did children 0-4 and See 2011 Census Results And Relation To Population Projections, Planning Committee, 24 April ottawa.ca Page 1

Households There were 353,245 private households in Ottawa in 2011, up 10% from Households with six or more people, while few in number, increased 15% during Households with one or two people accounted for 61% of all households in 2011, and increased 12% since Households with three to five people had the slowest growth, up only 6% since City-wide, average household size stood at 2.45 persons in 2011, compared to 2.52 in Although it may appear insignificant, the decline of 0.07 persons required an additional 9,500 housing units to be provided during the decade. Inside the Greenbelt, there were 9,300 new census households, up 4.4%. Those with six or more persons had the highest percentage increase (+10%) but they were few in number (with only 2% of households, they grew by 445). One-person households had the second-highest growth, up 9% (+6,900). Because 4-5 person households declined, virtually all growth inside the Greenbelt was accounted for by one or two person households. Outside the Greenbelt, total households increased 25% since 2006 but one-person households grew by 42% (+4,450). This was followed by households with six or more (+34% and 885 households) and two-person households (+30% or 7,300). Over the period, 57% of total household growth outside the Greenbelt was either one or two persons. In the rural area, total households were up 8% since Those with six or more people increased 18% (+150 households). Two-person households increased 13% and one-person by 12%. Almost 80% of total household growth during was in one or two persons. 40% Household Size Change, City of Ottawa, % 20% 10% 0% 1 Person 2 Person 3 Person 4-5 Person 6 or More Persons Source: Statistics Canada, Census ottawa.ca Page 2

100,000 One-Person Households, City of Ottawa, ,000 60,000 40,000 20,000 0 City of Ottawa Inside the Greenbelt Outside the Greenbelt Rural Area Marital Status Source: Statistics Canada, Census City-wide, 56% of people 15 and over were married or living common-law in 2011 (47% legally married and 9% common-law). Their number increased more slowly than the population 15 and over (8.5% compared to 9.8%) during , indicating a declining rate. Between 2006 and 2011, legally married persons increased by 7%, while people in common-law relationships grew by 17%. By major area, people married or common-law comprised 49% of the population 15 and over inside the Greenbelt, 65% outside the Greenbelt, and 68% in the rural area. The number of divorced people fell by 13% between 2006 and At least part of this decline was due to a change in how the census reported common-law partnerships in The percentage of population 15+ that was single in 2011 (never married, separated, divorced or widowed) was 51% inside the Greenbelt, 35% outside the Greenbelt, and 32% in the rural area. Families with and without Children City-wide, the proportion of families with children at home continued to decline. In 2011, 61.8% of all families (married, common-law or single-parent) had one or more children living at home, down from 63.0% in For comparison, 65.7% of families had children at home in 1996 (and in 1961, near the peak of the baby-boom, almost 73% had children at home). The percentage of families with children declined in all major areas of the city during In 2011, the traditional family, that of a married couple with children at home, represented only 41% of all families city-wide. By area, they constituted 34% of families inside the Greenbelt, 51% of families outside the Greenbelt, and 46% of families in the rural area. Families with children at home declined by 3% inside the Greenbelt, and increased 20% outside the Greenbelt and by 4% in the rural area. Lone parent families declined 0.4% inside the Greenbelt during , but grew 34% outside the Greenbelt and 20% in the rural area. ottawa.ca Page 3

Ages 6-17 declined in share. The proportion of adult children at home was higher inside the Greenbelt (12.8%) than in areas outside the Greenbelt (7.9%) or the rural area (8.6%). However, there was little change inside the Greenbelt since 2006, while outside the Greenbelt was increased 36% and the rural area was up by 20%. ottawa.ca Page 4

School-Age Children School-age children are classed as ages 6 to 17 inclusive. City-wide, their numbers remained virtually unchanged between 2006 and 2011, increasing by only 300 (+0.2%). As a share of the population, school-age children dropped from 15.0% to 13.8% during Children 6-17 declined both inside the Greenbelt (-5%) and in the rural area (-1%). Outside the Greenbelt was the only area where the school-age population increased, growing by 7.5% (+3.400) since In 2011, for the first time, the number of school-age children outside the Greenbelt (urban and rural areas combined) exceeded those inside the Greenbelt (65,700 outside compared to 56,300 inside). In 2006, the area inside the Greenbelt exceeded outer areas by almost 2,000 children. Seniors Living Alone Seniors living in a family, typically a couple, increased in proportion due primarily to longer lifespans among men. Although the number of Ottawa seniors (65 and over) living alone increased 10% during , it was less than the overall 16% increase in the seniors population. The proportion of seniors living alone has been declining, from 28% in 2001 to 27% in 2006 and 26% in Seniors living with relatives has also been declining, from 5.6% in 2001, to 5.3% in 2006, and 5.1% in Although the proportion of seniors living alone declined, their total numbers have increased significantly outside the Greenbelt due to the overall growth of the seniors population. Since 2006, seniors living alone increased 47% (+1,200 people) outside the Greenbelt. Housing Type Single-detached houses, comprising 43% of occupied units in 2011, remained the most common housing type in Ottawa. However, their share of the housing stock is declining, and row (townhouse) and apartment units are on the rise. Row (townhouse) units increased their share from 19.1% of units in 2006 to 20.5% in Inside the Greenbelt, apartments comprised the largest share of housing (46%) in Outside the Greenbelt, single-detached units accounted for 57% of the housing stock in 2011, while row housing represented 31.5%. Apartments comprised only 5.4% of units, but had the fastest growth since Outside the Greenbelt, apartments grew 37% since 2006, row units by 32%, and singles by 13%. In the rural area, single-detached grew by 9% and accounted for almost 95% of all housing. Row units, while few in number, saw significant growth, increasing 172% since ottawa.ca Page 5
