Nearly all f these classes can take place n lcal farms that prvide a gd teaching site fr the current tpic. All classes are taught in Hmng r with Hmng translatin. Farmers receive a certificate fr attending at least 3/4 f the classes. Instructr shuld plan time fr fllwing up ne-n-ne with each student n their wn farm. 4 Whle Farm Management fr Hmng Farmers Learn hw t assess available farm and business resurces Gain an idea f hw many peple yu can cunt n t help yu Assess the financial capital yu have available Assess current situatin with physical assets such as land, water, buildings, and equipment Assess current market utlets 2. Evaluatin f Resurces What are the pssibilities? Instructr Presentatin Resurce Evaluatin. Discuss imprtance f students evaluating what they currently have befre they decide n what type f enterprise will fit their situatin and their future needs. Intrductin t the cncept f resurces and the different kinds f resurces that exist. Assessing the peple that can help wrk n yur farm and farm stand, (i.e., family members, friends, hiring help) Assessing available land and water resurces Assessing buildings r equipment that is available t use. Where can yu sell what yu grw? Are there lcal markets available? Assess available financial capital and ways f raising additinal funds if needed. Describe the ways that family, friends, neighbrs, clan members, r rganizatins such as nn-prfits and gvernment agencies might be available t help yu as a resurce. Break (15 min.) Class Activity Ideally, this class shuld be held n a farm. As part f the curse the farmer can prvide a tur f their farm and describe its peratins and markets. This farm can then be used as a case study t examine the cncept f resurce assessment. Wrking tgether, the students can assess the resurce base available t this farmer, wrking thrugh all f the different kinds f resurces frm human t physical. Then the discussin can be mved t the students farms Hw wuld yu describe the land yu farm n? What type f sil? What kind f water supply? What kind f labr d they have available? What practices wrked best in the past and what wrks best here? Prvide students with a scenari f a crp prductin challenges related t crp rtatins n a limited acreage. Ask grups f students discuss alternative methds f slving the prblem and present their ideas t the class. Ask students abut the main issues they face n their farms. Cmpsting Use f cmpst and manure Break (15 min.) Class Activities Meet at ne f the students farms: Have students take sil samples fr a labratry sil test. Discuss and bserve what sil test result tells them abut their sil and simple calculatins fr adding fertilizer. Have students d an in field sil ph and perclatin test Have students determine the makeup f the sil using their hands While walking arund the farm discuss aspects f site assessment and practices fr managing nutrients and sil quality. 7 Whle Farm Management fr Hmng Farmers Learn basics f integrated pest management (IPM) Understand IPM cncepts and strategies; preventative methds, increasing beneficial insects, scuting and determining actin levels, etc. Learn cmmn alternative weed management practices Develp ideas abut pest management practices adaptable t yur farm peratin 5. Integrated Pest and Weed Management (We suggest taking 2-3 class sessins t wrk n pest management because this tpic is f strng interest t many Hmng prducers) Instructr Presentatin Instructr prvides intrductin t the cncept f integrated pest and weed management and ties this back t the whle farm planning wrksheet. First Class Sessin: Guest Speaker An invited pest management specialist (with translatin) cvers the basics f Integrated Pest Management f insects, weeds and disease including: Cultural, bilgical, physical and chemical cntrl methds Principles f IPM, including strategies fr preventin and assessment f damage Alternative methds f weed cntrl using: Cultural methds: planting dates, spacing, and crp rtatin Mechanical methds: by hand, mwing, cultivating equipment, flaming Bilgical: weeding with farm animals Physical: mulches Pesticide safety and handling The imprtance f knwing the pest and mnitring the situatin shuld be stressed in this lessn. Secnd Class Sessin: Guest Speaker Have a pest management specialist make a presentatin based n the materials already develped by the University f Massachusetts n Managing Flea Beetles which is translated int Hmng and English (Ruth Hazzard et al.) Fact sheets and phtgraphs have already been develped fr this presentatin. This can be paired up with an intrductin t insect identificatin by a WSU specialist, with pre-existing WSU insect guides. Break (10 minutes) Optinal Sustainable Farmer Prfile and Interview (allw at least 45 minutes) Guess Speaker, Michaele Blakely pest management and the use f weeds fr plant diversity. Class Activities Have students bring in insects and weeds frm their farms. Lead a discussin f hw t develp pest management strategies fr the insects r weeds that the students bring in.
