1 Spring 2016 January 25, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians: We are pleased to announce the Spring 2016 session of the New Milford After School Enrichment Academy. Enrichment Academy classes will begin on Wednesday, February 17, See course descriptions for specific class meeting dates. Children may attend any age appropriate course in any building. Parents must provide transportation to classes outside their child s home school. What parents need to know: Courses will be staffed by New Milford teachers. Course fees will vary. Materials are included unless otherwise indicated. Course enrollments must meet minimum requirements in order to run. Course enrollments are limited. Parents are strongly advised to register early. Courses will run from 3:30-4:30pm unless otherwise indicated. Waiting List Classes will be filled as registration forms are received. Waiting lists will be maintained for all filled classes. Parents will be notified if spots open. Arrival and Departure Parents must provide transportation to classes outside their child s home school. Parents must indicate on registration form if their child will walk home or be picked up at 4:30pm. It is expected that children will be picked up promptly at class end. Inclement Weather Class Cancellations Student Absence Enrichment classes will follow the school calendar. Enrichment classes will not be held if school is closed for any reason including emergency or weather related closings. Enrichment classes may be cancelled due to teacher emergency. Last minute cancellations will be announced during the school day. Parents will be notified at the address and telephone numbers specified on registration form. It is expected that parents will check for messages regarding cancellations. Teachers will make every attempt to reschedule classes cancelled by teacher emergency. Parents are requested to advise instructor if student will be absent for any reason. There is no credit for missed classes. American History Boston Trip Baking in Mugs Cheerleading Chess Children s Yoga Curious Crafters Energize Your Math! Jewelry Making Legos and K Nex Play Doh Creative Workshop Rocketry Soy Candle Making #101 A-maize-ing Popcorn! Ms. Harvey This is the place for popcorn lovers! Students will learn all about popcorn through a variety of art, literature, science, math,health, and social studies activities. You can look forward to tastetesting, popcorn games, popcorn experiments, popcorn crafts, and popping your favorite snack. Who s ready to start popping? 4 #102 American History Boston Trip Mr. Cottiers Students will be able to experience 3 different eras in American History as we travel to Boston to explore the Freedom Train from the American Revolution, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, and finally a state of the art World War 2 museum. DEOMS Room 111 Pre-Trip meetings: April 20 th and April 27 th Overnight Trip: May 5 th -6th $210*includes transportation to Boston, hotel, museum entrance, snacks and meals #103 Baking in Mugs Ms.Knappenberger & Ms. Joyce. If you love baking on a budget and are not so savvy in the kitchen, then this class is for you! Students who participate in this baking class will be making different desserts, using a mug and the microwave. No previous baking skill is necessary! All materials will be provided and at the end of the class, students will be able to take home their personalized mug and all seven recipes! This class is NOT recommended for students with food allergies. Thursdsays 8 sessions February 18, 25 March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 April 7 DEOMS 201 $120 #104 Cheerleading Ms. Lyons Come learn how to be a cheerleader! This class will emphasize fitness while incorporating cheer and cheer techniques. Students will learn teamwork, school spirit and have a blast! Comfortable clothes and sneakers required. 5 #105 Chess Club Mr. Kilic Chess is a game of mental skill that has been shown to improve concentration, creativity, and memory among other things. Success at chess requires no luck, only know-how, skill and strategy. DEOMS Computer Lab Thursdays 10 sessions February 18, 25 March 3, 10, 17,24,31 April 7, 21,28 #106 Children s Yoga Mrs. Rutigliano Help build strength and flexibility with physically challenging postures and flowing sequences. Promote self-confidence, awareness and control. Visualization and breathing exercises are used for overall balance and concentration, which can be applied toward everyday situations. Partner and group poses are emphasized. Age appropriate yoga games are included in every class. Class is 1 hour. Students should bring their own yoga mats. Have you ever wanted to make a tie dyed shirt using Sharpies, make flowers out of tissue paper, or painting with Q- tips? Energize Your Math will foster confidence and a deeper understanding of mathematics! They will also understand the more practical aspects as they build their own rocket and launch it! Students will enjoy creating and personalizing their very own soy candles in a color of their choice. Design one-of-a kind candles from a large selection of kid-inspired scents such as cotton candy or birthday cake! No experience necessary! 8 REGISTRATION INFORMATION 1. Registration period begins immediately. Registration closes Thursday, February 11, All completed registration forms and checks must be received by that date. 2. Class registration form will be on school websites to print at home; extra copies will be available in school offices. 3. A separate check and registration form is mandatory for each class. Please provide separate checks if registering siblings. Cash cannot be accepted. Please make your check payable to New Milford Board of Education. Separate checks for each class please. 4. Completed registration form and check should be mailed to: B.F. Gibbs Elementary School, 195 Sutton Place, New Milford, NJ 07646, Attn: Laura Impomeni, After School Enrichment Academy Program Coordinator, or dropped off in Main Office at Berkley, Gibbs, or DEO Middle School. 5. Classes will be filled in order of registration receipt by Program Coordinator. Parents are strongly urged to register early as class enrollments are limited. Parents will receive registration confirmation via . Waiting lists will be maintained as necessary. 6. Classes may be cancelled due to teacher emergency. These last minute cancellations will be announced during the school day. Parents will be notified of cancellations at the address and phone numbers listed on the Registration Form. It is the parent s responsibility to check for messages regarding class cancellations that may be left at the address and phone numbers provided. 7. There is no credit for missed classes. 9. The After School Enrichment Academy is a self funding program. Tuition income is necessary to meet program expenses. We cannot, therefore, issue refunds.
