4 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT Preface The purpose of Arts Research and Talent Development, Key Figures 2015 is to provide an internal report of recent developments in a variety of areas related to research and talent development within the Faculty of Arts and the departments. The data has been collected in the summer 2015 with support from administrative units at Aarhus University. A word of caution when reading this report; data from the departments can still not be completely matched and it is thus not possible to compare all data between the departments. It is therefore recommended that the conclusions in this report are read with reservations for statistical uncertainty. The report is considered an internal working paper at the Faculty of Arts and it not intended for external distribution.
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 5 1. Scientific Staff The Faculty of Arts has 513 scientific members of staff (end 2014) in the categories professor, associate professor, assistant professor and postdoc. 250 PhD students are enrolled at the Faculty of Arts (december 2014). Table 1. Arts scientific full-time staff (end 2014) PhD Students (Dec 2014) Assistant Prof. Adjunkt/ Postdoc (Source: AU Key Figures 2014 and Graduate School of Arts) Associate Prof. Lektorer Professors CAS (IKS) CC (IÆK) EDU (IUP) CUDIM Total In addition to the above mentioned categories, there are a number of scientific staff in the categories videnskabelige assistenter, studieadjunkter og studielektorer and other categories (CAS: 25, CC: 21, EDU: 44, CUDiM: 35). These are not included in the table above, since they have no formal research obligations. The percentage of women decreases when climbing the career ladder. By the end of 2014, 64 percent of the PhD students, 48 percent of the assistant professors, 39 percent of the associate professors and 30 percent of the professors (incl. MSO) are female at Arts. Note: The numbers are based on a manual count)
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 7 2. Scientific publications This section provides an overview of the scientific outcome of Arts research measured in types and numbers of publications. The overview is divided into bibliometric levels (BFI), peerreviewed and non peer-reviewed articles and publication language. Data is drawn from PURE in summer and fall All scientific staff are expected to update their PURE profiles by the end of February each year, however, there are still some qualitative and quantitative uncertainties in the PURE registrations and the measured output may therefore not be completely accurate. AU Library is taking steps to improve and ensure data quality in PURE. Since PURE is a dynamic database, the data drawn from PURE is considered a momentary glance into the scientific output. The numbers are constantly subject to change, due to new registrations, corrections etc. 2.1 Types of publications Research at Arts is published through diverse channels. Figure 1 provides an overview of the total number of publications divided into different types of research output. The total number of research publications at Arts have risen from in 2010 to in The most noticeable rise in recent years is within peer reviewed scientific articles and contributions to scientific books. Fig.1. Research publications, Arts total (Source: AU Key Figures, 2014) Note: The numbers in Figure 1 are drawn from PURE for the purpose of AU key Figures, and the methodology used is different than AU Library s method for the remaining parts of the report.
8 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 2.2 BFI Publications The Danish Bibliometric Research Indicator (BFI) is dynamic and both the journals and the publishers at level 1 or 2 are subject to change. Level 2 holds highest rated publications, while publications at level 1 are rated lower. All journals and publishers which are included in the BFI are subject to a peer-review process. Figure 2 show the total number of BFI rated publications. The majority of the BFI rated publications are either journal articles or book/anthology contributions (these are extracted in fig 3). Fig. 2. BFI, Arts total Fig. 3. BFI Scientific journal articles and book/anthology contributions, Arts total (Source: AU Library, PURE) In figure 2 and 3, co-authored articles and publications only count once. The numbers are therefore slightly lower than the total numbers of the three departments shown in table 5 below.
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 9 Table 5. BFI scientific publications by department CC CAS EDU (Source: AU Library, PURE) Journal Articles Level Journal Articles Level Book Level Book Level Book/Anthology contr. Level Anthology contribution Level Total Level Total Level Figure 4 show the total number of BFI scientific publications published by academic staff affiliated to each department. Co-authored articles count more than once, if an article is coauthored by researchers from different departments (Section 2.5 provides an overview of the number of co-authored publications). Fig. 4. BFI Scientific publications, totals by departments (Source: AU Library, PURE) Figure 5, shows the proportion of BFI scientific publication of each department (visualisation of Table 5 above).
10 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT Fig. 5. BFI Scientific publications, proportion in departments (Source: AU Library, PURE) The total distribution of BFI points earned in 2014 by the departments are CC: 29,9%, CAS: 45,6% and EDU: 24,5% (these numbers are only preliminary, as the final counts and drawings are not done until late 2015). 2.3 Peer-reviewed publications A total count of all publication types at Arts, divided into peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed shows that the far majority of the research output at Arts goes through a peer-review process. Fig. 6. Peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed publications, all publication types (Source: AU Library, PURE) Within the category of scientific journal articles (including literature review and scientific review) peer-reviewed publications are significant in all three departments. There is an ongoing process to a shift from publishing in non peer-reviewed to peer-reviewed publications.
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 11 Fig. 7. Peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed, scientific articles, by department (Source: AU Library, PURE) 2.4 Internationalisation and publication language It is a key strategic goal of Arts to increase the international impact of its research output. One indicator that can be used to view this development is the language of publication, especially the number of publications in English, and other languages relevant in a field. There is a continuous rise in the number of English publications at Arts in all three departments (Figure 8). Fig. 8. Publication language, peer-reviewed scientific articles (Source: AU Library)
12 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT In regard to contributions to books/anthologies and monographs (scientific books) (Fig. 9&10), the development towards more publications in English is not as obvious as with scientific articles. Fig. 9. Publication language, contribution to books (book chapter, encyclopedia chapter, report chapter (Source: AU Library) Fig. 10. Publication language, scientific books and reports (Source: AU Library) English and Danish are by far the two main publication languages. In addition to these, included in the other category, German is the most common language used, followed by French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish and Norwegian.
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT Author collaborations Researchers at Arts increasingly co-publish with one or more co-authors. Figure 11 shows that the majority of publications are single authored (column 1), but an increasing number of research publications are co-authored (column 2) and of these a major part are co-authored with at least one external collaborator (non-au) (column 3). The far majority of the external collaborators (non-au) are affiliated with mostly Danish, then Nordic and European research institutions. Fig. 11 Research publications, author collaborations *This column is a fraction of the middle (red) column (Source: AU Library, PURE) 2.6 Knowledge exchange publications Arts researchers are engaged in knowledge exchange. It is possible to register these activities in PURE, however, it is not yet common for all researchers to register these activities. As a result, the data in Table 6 holds a large amount of uncertainties, and it is fair to assume that activities and publications are much higher than the numbers registered. Table 6. 15 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT Talent Development The Graduate School, Arts had a total of 250 enrolled PhD students (end December 2014). The PhD students are affiliated with a department (view Table 1) and one of Arts eight PhD degree programmes (Table 7). Table 7. PhD enrolments 5+3 and 4+4+ from (Source: Graduate School, Arts) Note: Prior to 2012 PhD students from the programmes based at the Department of Education (Didactics; Learning and Education) are not included. An increasing amount of the PhD students are either co-financed or externally financed (figure 14). These PhD students are often affiliated with a university college, a museum or another institution while conducting their PhD studies at Graduate School, Arts. Fig. 14. Financing of the PhD students enrolled (head count) (Source: Graduate School, Arts) The PhD students at the Graduate School of Arts are in average 36 years old when they complete their PhD degree (BSS: 31, ST: 30, HE: 35). Figure 14 shows the development of the average completion time (effective study time) for PhD students at Graduate school of Arts.
ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 17 Fig.15. Graduate School, Arts, PhD students completion time in years for 4+4 and 5+3 (excl. all leaves and part A (MA credit) for 4+4 students) (Source: Graduate School, Arts) Note: Prior to 2012 PhD students from the programmes based at the Department of Education (Didactics; Learning and Education) are not included. The figures exclude one student in 2013 who completed 11 years after enrolment. In comparison to the other three faculties the effective study time for PhD students at Graduate School, Arts is slightly longer, especially for the students in the 5+3 programme. In 2014 the effective study-time for students at BSS, HE and ST was 3,1 years in the 5+3 programme. 3.1 Industrial PhD students Industrial PhD students are enrolled at the university for three years, and at the same time employed by a company/institution as part of their PhD project. The PhD students work full time on the PhD project and share their time equally between the company/institution and the university. The Faculty of Arts has had 24 industrial PhD students enrolled since Different measures are taken to make better use of the industrial PhD programme in the future. Fig. 16. Industrial PhD students at Arts, enrolments and graduates (Source: Graduate School of Arts)
18 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 3.2 Recruitment to Graduate School, Arts It is a strategic focus at the faculty to recruit external candidates for the Graduate School. The 4+4 students are internal recruitments, and therefore left out of figure 17. Fig. 17. Origin of MA degree, 5+3 enrolments (Source: Graduate School, Arts) In addition it is a key strategic goal of Arts to enhance the level of internationalisation of the enrolled PhD students. This is measured both by how many international PhD students the graduate school enrolls (fig. 18) but also on how many students do a research stay abroad (fig. 19). In term of PhD students with non-danish nationality (fig. 18) the total number at AU is 27 percent, at Arts 16 percent of the PhD students are of non-danish nationality in Figure 18 shows a slight increase in the number of international PhD students since However, compared to the other faculties at Aarhus University, the proportion of international PhD students is low. Fig. 18. International PhD students at AU, percentage of students with non-danish nationality (Source: AU Key Figures, ) Figure 19 shows the percentage of PhD graduates in 2013 and 2014 who went on a research stay abroad for a minimum of two months, during their PhD. It is not possible to provide data from earlier years.

20 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 4. External Research Funding In 2014, 17 percent of Arts annual accounts was external funding (Science and Technology: 36%, Health 25%, Business and Social Sciences 14%). Fig. 20. Arts annual accounts 2014 (1062 mio DKK) (Source: Administration Centre Arts) Other funding refers to non-state funding, for instance from Master tuition fees State others refer to funding that is neither education nor research related (i.e. library and other funds) In regard to external research funding it was 17 percent of the annual expense in Figure 21 provides an overview of the development of the annual expense level financed by external research funds to Arts since Fig. 21. Expenses financed by external research funds (Source: AU Key Figures) Table 8 shows the origin of funding sources, based on the total amount of external research funds to AU in the period The Table shows that the majority of external research funds comes from national funding sources and in particular from Danish public funds (65 percent for Arts in the period).

Arts funding sources (Source: AU key figures, 2014) At Arts, and most significantly at CAS and CC, one of the major funding sources for both research projects and postdoctoral projects is the Danish Research Council for Independent Research, Humanities (FKK). Figure 23 shows the development in funding that Arts departments have attracted from FKK (individual postdocs and collective research projects).
22 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT Fig. 23. FKK funding to Arts, individual postdoc and collective research projects (Source: data gathered from fivu.dk ) Note: 1) The 2015 column only includes the collective research projects (June 2015) and the spring round of postdoc grants (Feb. 15), it does not include the Fall round (Nov. 2015). 2) The Figure only shows the projects where Arts (AU) is the main applicant. Funding for Arts researchers who are coapplicants in other universities projects are not included. The three departments attract funding from different sources. In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 CAS has attracted considerable funding from FKK, in 2014 CC was the main recipient. The funding sources at EDU are more varied. EDU does research-based public sector consultancy where funding derives from governmental sources. Apart from public funding Arts also attracts funding from private funds (in particular Velux and Carlsberg). Fig. 24. Velux and Carlsberg funding to Arts (Source: Velux webpage and Administration centre, Arts) Note: The Figure only shows the projects where Arts (AU) is the main applicant. Arts researchers who are co-applicants in other universities projects are not included. It is a strategic goal of Arts to attract more research funding from EU and the coming Horizon 2020 framework. Table 9 provides an overview of the total amount of funding for research pro-

24 ARTS RESEARCH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT 5. International Rankings In recent years, Aarhus University has been moving up the most important international rankings. Among over universities world-wide, Aarhus University is ranked in the top 100 in several influential rankings. A high ranking is an important competitive advantage for a university which seeks to attract and retain the best students, researchers and partners. Table 11. Aarhus University Rankings Leiden Ranking 77* 68* 81* ARWU Shanghai National Taiwan University Ranking QS World University Ranking Times Higher Education World University Ranking 138 (AU) 95 (Arts and Humanities) *Among the 150 largest universities in the world (Source: The Rector s Office) The disciplines within social sciences and humanities do not have the same weight in the international rankings as STEM disciplines. The main reason for this is that most rankings are based on impact factor measured by citations. Within the social sciences and humanities impact is difficult to measure via citations indexes. Leiden and Shanghai rankings do not include the humanistic disciplines in their rankings. QS World University Ranking does a faculty based ranking, where the disciplines within arts and humanities are measured. QS Faculty rankings were until 2012 mainly based on academic reputation, from 2013 onwards the ranking also includes employer reputation and citation indicator. Table 12.
