2 FUNDRAISING IDEAS Are you looking to raise some funds for Right To Play but aren t quite sure how to do it? This document includes a handful of ideas that we have gathered from students at schools across the country! These ideas are intended to serve as suggestions only. Please feel free to modify these activities to better suit your needs and/or develop your own fundraisers! Just remember to make sure that your event theme is in line with the values and vision of Right To Play!! Dodgeball or Volleyball Tournament Hold a one-day dodgeball or volleyball tournament, raising funds through registration fees, ticket sales, concessions, donations, etc. Register teams of 6 to 10 players (charge a registration fee for each team). Once all teams are registered, develop brackets for your tournament. o If you are holding a single elimination tournament, a bracket-generator like this one may help you: Establish a set of basic rules for the competitions (for examples, see playdodgeball.org or volleytastic.com). Find volunteer referees and be sure that they have a clear understanding of the rules and scoring system. On the day of the event, charge an entry fee for spectators and collect registration fees from unpaid teams. If desired, distribute certificates and/or a trophy to the winning team. Gymnasium with defined boundary lines. For dodgeball: o At least 5 or 6 dodgeballs. For volleyball: o Volleyball net and at least 1 or 2 volleyballs. Inspiration Check out some footage from Right To Play at the University of Ottawa s annual volleyball tournament: o Right To Play at Castleton set a Guinness World Record with their 41 hour dodgeball tournament: o 2

3 Kickball Tournament Hold a kickball tournament, raising funds through registration fees, ticket sales, concessions, donations, etc. Register teams of players (charge a registration fee for each team). Once all teams are registered, develop brackets for your tournament. o If you are holding a single elimination tournament, a bracket-generator like this one may help you: Establish a set of basic rules for the competitions. Softball or baseball field with bases. o For an indoor tournament, you will need a gymnasium or other large space with defined boundary lines and bases. o At least 1 or 2 kickballs. Inspiration Right To Play at Castleton s Annual Kickball Tournament raised nearly $9,000 in Check out some footage from their event: o 50/50 Raffle Hold a 50/50 raffle at an event at your school. Obtain permission from the Athletics Director or other school official to hold a 50/50 raffle at a sporting event. Sell tickets to fans as they enter the event and/or while they are sitting in the bleachers. o Be sure to determine your ticket prices before the event (example: 1 ticket for $1, 5 tickets for $3, 10 tickets for $5, arm s length for $10). After halftime (or near the end of the competition), announce the winning ticket. Give half of the funds raised to the individual with the winning ticket. The other half of the funds raised will be your donation to Right To Play. Roll of raffle tickets Buckets/containers for ticket stubs Signs with ticket prices 3

4 Bake Sale Hold a bake sale at a designated time/place. Be mindful that you may need to obtain permission from a teacher or other administrator before holding the bake sale. Plan to hold your bake sale on a specific date and at a designated location at your school. o If possible, select a crowded location (ie: student union, sporting event, etc). A few weeks prior to the event date, begin advertising. Ask teammates, club mates, or friends to make cookies, brownies, or other baked goods. Venue for bake sale. Table for baked goods. Napkins, plates, and utensils for customers (as needed). Dance-A-Thon Hold an all-night dance-a-thon! Contestants can enter as individuals or pairs (you decide). Last one standing wins a trophy/prize. Select a date and location for your dance-a-thon. Register individuals or pairs (charge a registration fee for each entrant). Find a volunteer to serve as your event DJ. Find a few volunteers to serve as referees/monitors. On the day of the event, charge an entry fee for spectators and collect registration fees from unpaid entrants. Begin playing music at your scheduled start time. Contestants must dance until they can dance no more! Individuals/teams are eliminated when they stop dancing. o Volunteer referees/monitors are responsible for identifying teams who have stopped dancing. Once eliminated, dancers can join the crowd as spectators. Once there is one individual/pair left standing, they become the winners. o Note that you may want to set an end time in case you have a tie! Winners can be awarded a certificate, trophy, or other prize. Venue for dance-a-thon. Music player and speakers that will be loud enough for all dancers and spectators to hear. Jugs of water and cups for contestants. 4

5 Car Wash Hold a car wash at your school or at venue nearby. Select a date and location for your car wash (plan on holding your event in warm weather). o Note that you will want to select a location where you will have easy access to a hose or other water source). Find friends, teammates, or club mates to volunteer as car washers. A few weeks prior to the event date, begin advertising. Create signage that will be placed in locations near the car wash to direct drivers to you. Charge a predetermined amount (ie: $5 or $10) for drivers to have their cars washed. Sponges/rags for scrubbing. Car washing soap. Buckets of water. Water source (ie: hose). Other Great Ideas Here are a few more great ideas that you can use for inspiration. Try one of these or use them as inspiration to establish a new and unique event! Be creative; the possibilities are unlimited. Spin-a-thon or Erg-a-thon These events involve teams that always have one person on a bike or rowing machine for a morning, afternoon or, if you are feeling especially ambitious, a whole day! Many clubs have used this idea as an annual kick-off event. Hold the event at a popular area on campus to get more exposure and have more people drop by to the event. 24-Sport Challenge or Sport-a-thon Along the similar lines as the spin-a-thon and erg-a-thon, these events involve teams playing different games, sports and modified sports for X number of hours. McMaster in Canada held a university 24-Sport Challenge in 2013 and had exciting events like Laser Tag, inner tube water polo and wheelchair handball. Planning a 24-hour challenge is hard work but is very rewarding and creates excitement on campus. Another option is cutting down the time period and calling the event a sport-a-thon! Break a World Record Dream big and try to set a record at your school! One great example is University of Guelph s 2011 Hopscotch for Hope: They spray-chalked a 5.5 km hopscotch course and organized a day of music and food vendors. This event raise $11,000 for Right To Play and earned an official Guinness World Record! Movie Night or Documentary Screening Book a room or theatre to show a movie, provide snacks as a fundraiser and have a by-donation entry fee. Fill the Stadium or Stands or Arena Speak to your Athletic Department about having a portion of ticket sales go to Right To Play on a certain day or tournament. Create half-time activities, raffles and games to boost fundraising! 5
