3 Objectives of SCSA o o o Promote creativity and innovation amongst primary level students Promote interesting ways of learning science Toys are judged based on: Originality Creativity Design Sturdiness Let students bring their ideas to life!
4 Categories ScizKid Award Toy must demonstrate at least one scientific principle SCSA 2016 WhizKid Award Toy can be made of any material as long as it fits the theme which changes every year Pri 1-2 Pri 3-6 Pri 1-6
5 Theme for 2016 WhizKid Category RISE and SHINE How can the toy rise up? Can you make the toy sparkle, shine or glow? The toy can be made of any material as long as it is safe, sturdy and fun to play with. Experiment, innovate and explore the boundless possibilities!
6 Judging Criteria ScizKid WhizKid SCIENTIFIC CONTENT Scientific concepts: Presented in toy Accurate Presented in feasible representations STURDINESS Toy is sturdy and safe to play with Toy does not fall apart easily during operation. Use of interesting, safe and easily available materials CREATIVITY & ORIGINALITY Toy is original and unique Toy communicates scientific concepts relatively Demonstrates use of unique design ideas DESIGN Strong aesthetic appeal Easy to operate Demonstrates good design principles + RELEVANCE TO THEME Toy Rise and Shine and is fun to play with.
7 Judging Criteria 1. Depth of Understanding o Scientific principle behind the toy o Toy making process 2. Contribution to the toy creation process o Design and conceptualisation o Making and testing 3. Active participation; experience gained through building the toy SCSA organisers do not endorse any SCSA training courses conducted by external trainers
8 Examples of toys toys that are often submitted for scsa o Cars, Boats and Aeroplanes o Rolling can toys o Quiz toys o Workshop toys o Commercial toys o Jack-in-the-box o Catapults Do Encourage your students to think out of the box!
9 Toy Examples do try to avoid o Purchased or assembled toys for DIY kits (eg. Lego, LittleBits) o Toys using 3D-printed components
10 Toy Examples do try to avoid o Similar toys (in design, mechanism employed etc) from the same school
11 Examples of toys Examples of Rise & Shine Toys These are just some of the many examples of toys that suits the theme.
12 Prizes Over S$20,000 worth of prizes for participants Schools producing the TOP 3 prize winners in the Scizkid (Pri 3-6 category) and Whizkid category will receive cash prizes of up to S$1,500 and certificates. Schools with most number of shortlisted toys in each category will receive cash prize of S$1,000.

17 SCSA (Schools) Competition Friends of SCSA Award o To recognise your school s excellent support for SCSA o Have organised SCSA (Schools) Competition for consecutively 3 years (from years ) o Receive a certificate
18 SCSA (Schools) Competition Blue Ribbon Award The SCSA Blue Ribbon Award seeks to recognise: o the influence teachers have on their students in the SCSA (Schools) Competition; o the role that teachers have in motivating their students to achieve; o the role teachers play in guiding, mentoring, and advising students; and o teachers that achieve results outside the classroom. Winning teachers will receive a certificate, customised award and a congratulatory letter from SCSA Organising Committee.
19 SCSA (Schools) Competition Diamond Award Recognise teachers for the following in addition to Blue Ribbon Award: o Won at least two Blue Ribbon Awards prior; o Emphasises the participation and success of nominated teacher's students in competition; o Track record of improving students achievements, and making a difference in students; o Using innovative out-of-classroom programme and activities; o Overcame challenges to positively impact students in competition.
20 SCSA Workshops o o o CREATIVITY & COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP Concept of the creative journey for great toy designs Brainstorming Journaling Prototyping, etc. Ways to effectively communicate and present creation to audience Storytelling Preparing for presentation poster, etc. Group activity during the session TECHNICAL WORKSHOP o Basic skills of toy-making o Exploring of science concepts such as force, gravity and conversion of energy Each school may select 1 session per workshop, and bring up to 8 students per workshop

24 Form B - report o Submission details o By 29 th April 2016 Pg 1 Compulsory for all schools o o Do give an accurate figure No minimum entries required (Min of 30 students for SCSA (Schs) competition) Impt o o Indicate preferred timeslot for submission of toys Schools that turn up during registered timeslot will be served first
25 Pg 2 Compulsory for SCSA (Schs) Form B - report o 30 minimum students required to qualify as internal competition. Impt o Determines number of certificates given, hence impt to give accurate number so that all participants would receive a certificate The names of winners in the internal competition. If you have more than 20 winners, attach additional sheet to this form.
26 Toy Submission Pointers o Label ALL TOYS AND TOY PARTS with provided sticker labels on the toys, not on the packaging o Photocopied form or stickers are allowed Sticker labels should be secured on the toy with glue, tape, etc. o Include entry form (found in the leaflet) with each toy o Do test out toys repeatedly before submission! o Ensure all parts of toy properly secured
27 Packaging of Toys SCSA Primary School Good packaging o Each toy in a transparent ziplock bag or cardboard box (max size A3) o One toy (with all its parts) per ziplock bag or box o Multiple toys, in own packaging, can be placed in bigger box for transport purposes o Do not use staples, tape or glue to seal the ziplock bag or box
28 Packaging of Toys What to avoid when packing toys: o Different parts of toy in separate bags or box / not attached together o Only name and class stated on toy o Toy is larger than A3 size / stored in box larger than A3 size
