Aquaculture at Coega
DEFINITION Marine aquaculture is defined as the farming of marine organisms, including fish, molluscs, crustaceans, seaweeds and other invertebrates in a controlled or selected marine environment for all or part of their lifecycle.
AQUACULTURE vs WILD FISHERIES Wild harvested fisheries are under pressure Future demand for fishery products will be increasingly sourced through aquaculture Fastest growing food production sector globally at 8-10% per annum over the past two decades FAO projects that by 2030, more than half the global fish supplies will originate from aquaculture, and that by 2025, annual demand for seafood will outstrip the capacity of wild fisheries by about 55 million tonnes per annum
ZONE 10: AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT ZONE 440 Ha in Zone 10 Enabling infrastructure (including seawater intake and discharge outlet) R&D and training facilities
STRATEGIC PROJECT Feasibility study indicate that: Coega IDZ - good geographical location for abalone, Dusky Kob, and seaweed. Approximately tons/annum of abalone, Dusky Kob, and seaweed could be harvested Market value of US$ 278 million 80 Ha of abalone farming requires 50,000 M 3 of seawater per hour (1,000 ML/day) located 1.5 km offshore Cost estimation for seawater intake: R1,3 billion Targeting 5605 jobs
INITIAL WATER REQUIREMENTS Farming type tons /annum Volumes m3/hr m3/day L/day ML/day Abalone Abalone Hatchery spat / month Abalone Processing Plant 1.6 tons / day Finfish Finfish Hatchery fry / month Finfish Processing Plant 15 tons / day TOTAL
