Aquaculture in Nova Scotia 2008

Aquaculture The farming of aquatic organisms in inland and coastal areas, involving intervention in the rearing process to enhance production and the individual or corporate ownership of the stock being cultivated. - United Nations

Indonesia Shellfish Landbased Ponds Marine finfish cages Landbased tanks

Nearly half the fish consumed as food worldwide are raised on fish farms rather than caught in the wild an additional 40 million tonnes of aquatic food will be required by FAO 2006

Global Farmed Salmon Production

World Production of Aquaculture & Capture Fisheries Capture Fisheries 68 Million Tonnes 91% Aquaculture 7 Million Tonnes 9% Capture Fisheries 96 Million Tonnes 62% Aquaculture 59 Million Tonnes 38% Capture Fisheries are estimated to be at their peak at 100 million Tonnes. Aquaculture is estimated to continue rapid growth around the world.

Fact or Fiction? Farmed fish contain toxic levels of harmful substances Actually.. PCBs and other contaminants are found in all aspects of our lives. PCB levels in farmed salmon are lower than in other sources of protein. PCB levels in farmed salmon are well within Health Canada guidelines.

Fact or Fiction? Farmed fish are fed antibiotics and other chemicals Actually. All ingredients in aquaculture feed are approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under the Federal Feeds Act. Wild salmon get their pink colour from carotenoids. Farmed salmon eat those same carotenoids in their food Aquaculture feed does not include antibiotics unless prescribed by a veterinarian for a specific fish health concern Feed is expensive and consumption is carefully monitored by underwater cameras to ensure waste is minimal

Fact or Fiction? Farmed fish are covered in sea lice Actually.. Sea lice are naturally occurring parasites of wild and farmed salmon. Treated only under veterinary supervision. Nova Scotia sea lice numbers are generally low on farmed fish stocks. In 2006 one farm in Nova Scotia treated for sea lice. Studies show East Coast wild stocks not threatened.
