1 OUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE WIND ENERGY ELECTRICAL NETWORKS NUCLEAR GENERATION ENERGY POLICY & ECONOMICS
2 INTRODUCTION ENERGY Solving global energy needs from the creation of advanced power solutions and renewable technologies Across the University of Strathclyde, academics are working with industry to develop solutions to global energy and power generation challenges. This ranges from the development of advanced renewable energy technologies and their integration within electricity networks and distribution systems, to the use of smart grid technologies for more effective operation and control. Our research covers the breadth of low carbon power supply and demand. We are involved in developing advanced technologies for: demand side management energy storage offshore power networks HV grid protection and distribution new power generation systems asset condition monitoring predictive diagnostics. We also recognise that the availability of skilled employees is fundamental to economic success. Our teaching is informed by world-class research and our comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate continuing professional development courses play a key role in addressing the skills shortage of graduate and postgraduate engineers across the energy sector. Our centres for Doctoral Training in Wind Energy Systems and Power Network (Smart Grid) Systems are the UK s largest academic research centres with partnerships in more than 40 businesses to support the emerging technology needs of the low carbon power and renewable energy sector. Our Power Networks Demonstration Centre allows us to test and develop these technologies on the 11kV and 128kV distribution grids. In partnership with key industry leaders, we have developed a range of collaborative programmes aimed at addressing the cost optimisation and investment risk challenges needed to meet the levelled generation cost targets for the UK s Offshore Wind sector by Our research activities partner with leading Scottish and UK government-funded programmes including the 50 million Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. 3
3 WORKING WITH STRATHCLYDE OUR INSTITUTES & CENTRES The University of Strathclyde is home to the largest university electrical power engineering and energy research grouping in Europe. We work closely with our industry partners to develop innovative solutions to global energy challenges, and our energy programmes are tailored to provide the skilled graduates to meet their needs. Strathclyde is a member of the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP), an alliance of Scottish universities chaired by our Principal, Professor Sir Jim McDonald. With more than 250 academics and 700 researchers, the ETP is one of the largest power and energy research networks in Europe. Our multidisciplinary research programmes are focused on the needs of our industry partners and bridge the gap between fundamental research and demonstration and deployment; we work with our partners to identify key challenges and scope programmes and projects. In addition, the University uses a resourcing model which enables us to establish a core team of experts who can build knowledge of our partners business needs. With a perspective beyond the usual business operational horizons, we offer thought leadership that will act as a facilitator of innovative activity. We provide a flexible approach, whether the requirement is a one-off contract, a long-term collaborative research project or participation in a consortium with other organisations with common interests. Much of our industry-facing research activity takes place in the Technology and Innovation Centre our state-of-the-art facility where staff, students, industry and government can converge to exchange ideas and collaborate to provide solutions. The Centre houses shared facilities where world-class researchers respond to problems in partnership with industry. Our policy-orientated research activity is focused in the Centre for Energy Policy, the Department of Management Science and the Law School. The Centre for Energy Policy organises seminars and policy workshops where researchers, industry and government stakeholders exchange knowledge and ideas to provide solutions to energy and climate policy issues. TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION CENTRE Revolutionising the way researchers in academia and industry collaborate and innovate, the Technology and Innovation Centre aims to transform research, teaching and knowledge exchange to deliver useful learning for the technological age. Together with industry, academics within the Centre are working in areas of global importance from advanced renewable energy technologies and smart grids to leading-edge design for marine and aerospace electrical networks. Our partnership approach is helping the development of new technologies, enabling companies to compete on the world stage, informing public policy, and ultimately, helping to ensure a secure, sustainable and affordable energy future. The Technology and Innovation Centre houses some of our industry partners including The Weir Group, SSE, Scottish Power and EDF Energy. ADVANCED FORMING RESEARCH CENTRE The Advanced Forming Research Centre is a collaborative venture between the University, Scottish Enterprise, the UK Government and leading multinational engineering firms including Rolls- Royce and The Boeing Company. The 35 million facility focuses on developing forming and forging technologies to support the development of high integrity components. The Centre undertakes research and development based on industrial-scale equipment in order to deliver solutions which can readily transition into industry. POWER NETWORKS DEMONSTRATION CENTRE Power Network Demonstration Centre is a venture between the University, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Funding Council and SSE. It is accelerating the adoption of novel research and technologies into the electricity industry. CENTRE FOR ENERGY POLICY Energy policy continues to face the challenge of addressing the different dimensions of the energy trilemma. The Centre aims to help address issues such as improving carbon and energy efficiency in cost-effective ways, de-risking and achieving economic viability for new technologies such as carbon capture and offshore renewable energy deployment, as well as tackling affordable heat (and fuel poverty), while stimulating sustainable economic growth. INSTITUTE FOR FUTURE CITIES The Institute for Future Cities City Observatory, part of Glasgow s 24 million Future City Demonstrator project, is an innovative information system which collects, manages and interprets data. This unique research tool can be used to help monitor energy demand and behaviour, and inform the future optimisation of energy systems. The Institute is also European coordinator for the STEP UP project (Strategies Towards Energy Performance and Urban Planning), a partnership between four European cities Glasgow, Ghent, Gothenburg and Riga working with research and commercial partners to develop improved approaches to sustainable and smart-city energy planning. INSTITUTE FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT The Institute for Energy and Environment, within the University s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, is one of the largest electrical power engineering and energy technology university research groups in Europe, with a 35 million portfolio of activities. Its 200 staff and researchers undertake fundamental, strategic and applied research, covering the key technical and policy aspects of energy systems. Delivering the future low carbon electricity network is emerging as a key strategic challenge for the energy sector. With global populations increasing, the growing demand for power relative to the supply available has become a serious problem in achieving national and international vision of low carbon energy. 5
4 CAREER DEVELOPMENT COURSES FOR PROFESSIONALS TAUGHT POSTGRADUATE COURSES A wide range of postgraduate courses relevant to the energy sector is offered by departments across the University, including: Strathclyde Business School MSc Global Energy Management MSc Global Sustainable Cities Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences LLM Climate Change Law and Policy LLM International Law and Sustainable Development Faculty of Engineering MSc Advanced Electrical Power Engineering MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering with Energy Systems MSc Electrical Power Engineering with Business MSc Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Business MSc Wind Energy Systems Sustainable Engineering: MSc Renewable Energy Systems and the Environment MSc Offshore Renewable Energy The full list of taught postgraduate degrees is available at: 6
