3 WHAT IS AN HBCU? Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are institutions that were founded to serve the higher educational needs of the African American community. Many historically black colleges and universities were founded after the Civil War, in response to legislation (the Morrell Act) signed by President Lincoln creating land grant colleges in the states. HBCUs were established primarily to serve the African-American community, however, they are open to students of all ethnicities. More than 100 HBCUs in the country. Most located in the South and on the East Coast. Most award bachelor s degrees in many fields. Some also award master's and doctorate degrees.
4 HBCU TRANSFER AGREEMENT An agreement was signed on March 17, 2015 between the California Community Colleges and several HBCUs. California community college students who complete certain academic requirements are guaranteed transfer to a participating HBCU. Currently there are 21 HBCU campuses that participate in this agreement.
5 WHY CONSIDER AN HBCU? High quality education. Highly rated professors and longstanding commitment to educating students. Major in liberal arts, sciences, business, the arts, engineering. Well rounded education. Rigorous academic programs, emphasis on culture, and social support. Big and small campuses. Depending on your comfort choose a small college (3,000 or less) or a medium to large college (5,000 30,000). HBCUs are public and private. Find the one that best fits your needs. In general private colleges and universities will have more flexibility to offer financial aid. Rich in diversity and culture. Can immerse yourself in African American cultural experience, while studying in a diverse environment. Study out-of-state. HBCUs are spread out across the south and east coast. An opportunity to live in another state.
6 2 ND ANNUAL HBCU TRANSFER TOUR LPC staff and faculty (4) are taking 20 students on a tour of 9 HBCU campuses. ochabot College will join us on the tour. Spring break 2017: March th (Monday Saturday) Must commit to attendance. Open to any student who has a transferrable GPA of 2.5 or better; has completed 30 CSU Transferrable units by fall 2016 OR will complete an Associate s Degree for Transfer (AS-T, AA-T) by spring Must have an interest in applying to and attending an HBCU. Encouraged to apply to at least one HBCU campus that we visit.

Learn about majors, transfer admission requirements. ovisit with a counselor (Counselor Zapata or Burks) if you have questions. All expenses are paid!
