Today the SLA exists to support and encourage all those working in school libraries, raising awareness and promoting good practice through an effective training and publications programme. Membership of the Association brings many benefits including an advisory/information service for national and international enquiries, a quarterly reviewing journal, online resources, and reduced rates for all publications, training courses and our annual residential course. We believe that every pupil is entitled to effective school library provision. 3 SCHOOL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Annual Report For the year ended 31 March 2014 As ever, a busy year for the School Library Association with some changes in our operation and personnel; we strive to keep the Association working effectively and efficiently so that members subscriptions are directed to key areas of our work. This year we feel we have made more strides in this direction and maintain our working surplus, which we can invest in the future of the Association. We have spent a significant part of our efforts in updating and revisiting our Articles of Association, which will be presented to the membership at the AGM in Manchester, in June It is vital that an association like ours keeps abreast of current legislation and maintains the right tools for us to fulfil the needs of members into the future. Tricia Adams Chief Executive Reviewing , we had a very successful year with a busy and invigorating Weekend Course held in Belfast. We also held the Information Book Award Celebration as part of the Bath Children s Literature Festival, where overall winner Stefan Gates (Incredible Edibles, Walker Books) surprised and enlightened us with his lively acceptance speech. We hope to continue this excellent partnership with Bath Festivals into the future. The School Libraries Celebration Day brought us three very deserving winners of accolades Carterton Community College, Oxfordshire were delighted to win the School Library Design Award. Whilst at the same celebration, John Iona from Enfield and Hilary Cantwell from Waterford were equal winners of the School Librarian of the Year Award. These vital awards not only celebrate excellence in their own fields, but also provide useful advocacy to Heads and senior leaders in schools to aim for the highest the school can achieve in the provision of school libraries, and they are a good way to highlight excellent practice. We are delighted to welcome several new sponsors this year for our different awards, as well as continuing our work with other sponsors. For the School Librarian of the Year we are pleased to continue working with both Softlink Europe and Raintree, and to welcome Macmillan Children s Books; the Inspiration Award (previously School Library Design Award) is sponsored by LFC and Gresswell new, but known to us through our contact with Demco Interiors previously; Hachette continues as the sponsor of the Information Book Award, and our association with MLS for the weekend course, starting in 2013 will continue for three years. We could not do all the things we are enabled to do without the generous support from all these firms a huge thank you from SLA. The SLA, through the good offices of our President Kevin Crossley-Holland, has also opened a partnership with the Siobhan Dowd Trust. The Trust works to give young people the opportunity to read and enjoy literature a cause close to our hearts, too. In conjunction with the Trust we have run a competition with significant prizes for the winners to upgrade their school libraries. Schools entering need to show a definite need, a significant degree of deprivation, and also convince the judges as to why they should win! We hope to build on this first partnership with the Trust into the future. Chris Brown has been at the SLA for many years in various roles, so it was with some regret that we knew his retirement was approaching. Chris had been Reviews Editor on The School Librarian for several years and will be missed for his insights on children s publishing, his useful contribution to meetings and his unfailing good humour. His replacement, Joy Court, is already in place and working hard for SLA! As if this was not enough for the year we have also run 20 training courses on a variety of topics across the country, and issued 7 new publications! We are continuing to develop new partnerships, new training offers and further exciting publications as we look forward for Tricia Adams, Chief Executive iii
