Expo What is Respect? By Charlie M. & Jaden Y. What is respect and how do you show it? People should respect friends, family, teachers, and people that care about them because if you are not respectful, it will be like a boomerang and you will not be respected. If you are it will be like a Frisbee and will pass on and might come back to you in a good way. Respect should happen anytime, anywhere, and even to people that you don t know. It should happen without being asked because it really shows that you care about them. Or if there is something that you need help with and someone comes over and helps, that usually means that they care about you. Respect is not just being nice to people, is respecting people s property. For example, you should not touch anything that someone else has unless they give you permission. You should not go into someone else s locker or write on their white board. Another way of showing respect is when someone is being laughed at, you should not laugh with them even if it s funny and stop them from laughing. This will make them feel better and also might want to be your friend. You can make a chain reaction with respect for others. A chain reaction is when someone is nice or helps you with something and you pass it on to someone else by doing something nice for them. Your feelings can be like a suitcase. Sometimes if you might have something bad in your suitcase you might take it out on someone else by accident. To prevent this from happening you should talk to your parents, teacher, friend, or counselor. And, show others respect in order to get respect back. H.S.A Halloween Spook-Tacular By Audrey G. & Megan S. The H.S.A sponsored the first annual Halloween Spook-tacular. It was for grades Pre 6. Everyone was wearing costumes, and having a blast! For the Spooktacular kids and teachers decorated doors. The kids chose what they liked and put it on the door. Some things classes put on the door included owls, ghosts, witches and haunted houses. At the Spook-tacular kids were getting candy and small toys while they were Trick-or-Dooring. What is Trick-or-Dooring? It is basically indoor trickor-treating. At the Spooktacular kids were Trick-or- Dooring by going classroom to classroom collecting candy and prizes. There were many fun activities that night. There were games in the gym such as a guessing game and a balloon popping game. You could win prizes like a ball, mask and inflatable toys. The Spook-tacular was a blast! We hope they have it again next year.

2 P A G E 2 Interview with Ms. Kotcho By Lucy G. & Sammy H. Spotlight on Staff! MTES Principal Ms. Kotcho Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of your principal s life? Well, here are the answers to all of those questions! Do you live in Mendham? No, I do not live in Mendham. I live in Flemington, New Jersey. Are you married? No, I am not. Do you have any pets? Yes, I have a Yellow Lab named Bailey. Do you have any kids? If so, what are their names and how old are they? I do. I have three children. My daughter Annie, She is eleven. I have twin boys, John and Christopher. They re seven. What is your favorite color? Blue. That s an easy one. How was your schooling different from ours? Well, it looked different, but the biggest difference, I would have to say, was that the kids nowadays really learn differently, and are using technology to do that. I also think that the teachers teach in more fun ways. Which one of your teachers will you remember forever? That s a good question. I would probably have to say My third grade teacher, Miss Ross. She helped me become a much better reader. What was your favorite subject when you were a child? Reading. I loved Charlotte s Web. I really liked the Nancy Drew series and Judy Blume was my favorite author. Who is your role model? My father, he inspired me to do many things. Do you enjoy being a principal? I do, A lot. My dad was a principal. What inspired you to become a principal? Probably my dad, he had a lot to do with it because when I was a little kid he would take me to his school on the weekends, and I would sit in the library and read all the books and play on the intercom while he would do his work. He would tell me how the school ran and what he would do during the day. So, I kind of learned what it was like to be a school principal from the time I was a kid. Continued on Page 4. Austin the Unstoppable! By: Robbie P. & Drew B. On November 18, the Gorge Street Playhouse came to our school to perform a play called Austin the Unstoppable. Austin is the raining master of x-box and junk food junkie. Eleven year old Austin must face the long-term consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle when he learns his mother has been diagnosed with type two dia- betes. In partnership with Shaping New Jersey, this new musical comedy explores the challenges of one family learning how to make healthy choices together. This fun upbeat musical engages in the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise by celebrating how positive change can occur through the power of love, hard work, and support. Everybody knows that change is hard. Once you eat healthy for a while it feels natural.

3 V O L U M E 7, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 The Chain Reaction By Lindsay L. Alaina T. & Janae K. In October Mendham Township Elementary School had an assembly about Rachel s Challenge. Who is Rachel? Rachel was the kindest person anyone has ever met. The chain reaction is when children in a school make a chain for their acts of kindness. A chain reaction happens when one student does something nice and another student does something nice and it continues. Rachel said it was like dominos. Continue the chain reaction is one of Rachel s quotes. The problem Rachel wanted to change is people getting hurt and bullied and many more problems she wanted to end. It was Rachel s dream for people to spread acts of kindness. For example some of the acts of kindness could be to use kind words and do kind things, accept and include others, choose positive influences, set goals and keep a journal. The chain reaction is part of Rachel s challenge and is part of a major bucket filling program here at MTES. It is an important program because if we continue what Rachel did then it will make everyone will feel great about themselves and be happy. Rachel really made everyone happy, included people and was a great person. Children Helping Children By: Isha T. & Alexandra A. Roar! Did you hear that? Those are the Tiger Leaders. Mrs. Mulvaney, Mrs. Bizzarro, and Mrs. Gallagher are leading this big team, the 4 th grade Tiger Leaders. It is a program that teaches you how to be a leader in a school or community. It helps 4 th graders learn their responsibility. The theme of the leader program is CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN. This means that the 4 th graders help other students out. To get into the Tiger Leader program, you had to write an essay. In this essay, you explain why you would like to be a tiger leader. Not only you write an essay, but also your teacher is asked how you act in school every day. The best essays get chosen and the best essays included descriptive language, interest, and lead- ership. In tiger leaders we do many things. Of course we learn how to be a leader, but we also do many projects to help us build on our leadership skills. For example, the first project we did making a poster about leadership and developed a list of words that meant leadership. After that we went into the computer lab and turned our list into a word cloud. We did this for two reasons. The first reason was to learn about leadership. The second reason was to put it into our lockers, rooms or any place that will remind us that we should be a leader every day. One tiger leader named Drew said, I can t wait for tiger leaders because I can do actions that help and reflect off on other people. Another tiger leader named Grace said, Being a leader means helping others. Another tiger leader named Gabriella said, I would like to make people smile and when other people help other people they become friends. Strive not to be a success, but try to be a value. This quote is the tiger leader mission, don t just be successful, also be a value. That is what tiger leaders should be.

4 PAGE 4 Interview with Ms. Kotcho Continued... Do you think being a principal is a challenging occupation? Yes What do you think a good principal should do? I believe a good principal should know how to listen. Have you ever had any other job besides a principal? Yes, a teacher for second grade and third grade, and an assistant principal at an elementary school, and a gifted and talented teacher for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. How did you decide to come to Mendham Township Elementary School? I knew that it was a great school and that it was looking for a new principal because a friend told me about the job opening. Have you been a principal anywhere else? Yes, Mountain Lakes New Jersey and Basking Ridge New Jersey. Do you think that you will stay at Mendham Township Elementary School for a long time? Certainly! What fun and enjoyable activities are you planning for us this year? (We won t tell anyone.) Maybe a movie night and a fun fair at the end of the year. What do you think of us interviewing you? It s great because you get to practice your writing skill. Thank you to Ms. Kotcho for taking time out of her BUSY schedule to answer our questions. The Home School Association By: Emma W. Samantha M. & Grace V. What does the H.S.A. do? They raise money for the school to get supplies for the classrooms, library, gym, art and more. Who is in the HSA? Our parents and teachers and more. The HSA meetings are held in the Staff Development room at the Mendham Township Elementary School. The meetings are held every other month. They talk about programs that they are running for the kids and any updates they have. We asked an HSA Member some questions because we wanted to learn more about the HSA. Mrs. Shrem the Co-President of the HSA answered our questions. We asked her how do you decide what the school needs? The HSA decides what the school needs by asking teachers to fill out a wish list for them. Next, the HSA figures out how much money is needed and makes purchases based on the teachers input. How much work goes into setting up an event? A lot of work goes into setting up an event like the Spooktackular. It takes at least a month or to plan a event at the Mendham Township Elementary School. More volunteers equals less work for everybody! You should become an HSA member because it helps our school be better and its really fun for grown ups. If you want to become a HSA member go to our school website!
