5 BACHELOR OF ARTS (HONOURS) BUSINESS Programme Objectives Pathway Modules The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Business with the various pathways are Joint Honours programmes which offer direct honours with dual specialisations. They provide students with a wide range of pertinent knowledge, skills and study for real-world business; and combines the study of the chosen pathway with solid conceptual and practical knowledge. These Joint Honours programmes give students a double edge in the highly competitive graduate employment market. Programme Structure This Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme consists of 7 core modules, 4 specialisation modules and 1 dissertation. 6 LEARNING CYCLE A typical term is an approximately 11 to 13 week period covering 2 modules. Each module is supported with approximately contact hours, conducted on weekday evenings and weekends. The actual cycle may vary depending on the nature of the course and the lecturers availability. The University and Kaplan reserve the rights to alter the learning cycle, days and timing of the seminar if necessary. Weeks classes, per week Week 10 Break Week 11 Assignment Submission Graduation and Recognition Honours Award Career Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the prestigious Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Business with the various pathways from Northumbria University. The degree will be the same as that awarded to on-campus students of the University. Graduates will be allowed to use the title BA (Honours) after their names. Presentation ceremonies are held once a year in Newcastle/Singapore. Graduates are encouraged to attend the degree convocation in Newcastle with their families whenever possible. Honours will be awarded based on the overall average grade of all the modules combined in accordance with the University s course regulations. Programme Management The BA (Hons) programme will be managed by a professional programme management team, which will ensure that in addition to seminars and lectures, students will receive support on important areas, such as the service of a programme manager/executive, regular programme newsletters (updates) via , academic support system via /internet, textbooks, study notes, study group formation, Kaplan City Campus library membership, assignment and examination management, student liaison and organisation, etc. When you graduate with a degree from Northumbria University, your career options are almost endless. Assessment Scheme Each unit is assessed by a combination of written assignments, projects, presentations or examinations. Assessment methods may vary according to individual unit requirements. 7 UNIT OUTLINE Core Units Personal and Organisational Development This unit explores the interface between personal and organisational development. Using the graduate recruitment process to exemplify the exchange between the organisation s development needs and the individual s development needs. This unit improves students chances of obtaining graduate-level employment or promotion through a development of their professionalism. Global and International Business Contexts This unit focuses on the development of analytical skills, rather than an ability to describe, and on the ability to apply knowledge to aid strategy development. The unit will focus on the near environment, in terms of international markets, industries and organisations, and will use the research and analysis of contemporary cases to illustrate theory and concepts. Students will exploit the opportunities offered by the international environment of Newcastle Business School to develop global citizenship and cultural intelligence by working in international teams in the seminars. Business Performance Management Evaluating business performance involves analysing a number of different business areas, integrating that information, and considering the needs of a wide range of stakeholders. This unit will examine the performance techniques used to evaluate the business in a number of key areas including finance, marketing, HRM and logistics. Assessment will be by means of two periodic exams (during the semester) and an integrated case study with an individual and group component (at the end of the semester). Markets and Customers This unit introduces students to the philosophy and concepts of marketing in a modern day context. A wide range of marketing variables are studied, in addition to factors influencing the marketing environment both in general and within specific industries and businesses. Specific attention is given to the various contexts in which marketing principles and practices are utilised and ongoing developments associated with marketing activities. Students understanding of marketing principles, and their practical deployment, will be developed utilising pertinent case study material in lectures and seminars and through the assessment of the unit. Applied Business Ethics This unit examines issues relating to business ethics and corporate governance. Business ethics involves the examination of the relationships between organisations, those involved in the management of organisations, and external stakeholders. Corporate governance is concerned with the structures created by government and other regulatory bodies around the world to address some of the issues raised by an investigation of business ethics. Strategic Management and Leadership The aim of the unit is to integrate learning that has taken place in previous years about the organisation and its environment and to encourage students to think strategically about the future development of organisations. The unit will also show how leadership at all levels is important throughout this process and offer the opportunity for students to develop their own leadership, intellectual and creative skills assessment. Dissertation This unit will be taken by all continuing students pursuing an Honours Undergraduate Degree at NBS. It consists of an individual student led investigation into an applied business (or the named degree) problem or issue. The student must choose and define the topic, research relevant information (either primary or secondary), set that information in the context of an appropriate intellectual framework, draw relevant conclusions, write up and submit the work in approved format, target length 10,000 words. A support lecture programme and an individual dissertation supervisor will be provided. Culture and Organisations The rationale of the unit is to develop a coherent understanding of the issues relating to theory and practical applications of cultural and organisational impacts on organisations and institutions in the global and international environment. Formative assessment will reflect assessment for learning taking the form of a class exercise linking to the summative assessment. Students will also have access to a range of interactive resources within Blackboard interactive quizzes and discussion boards through which they can test and refine their understanding. 06

8 UNIT OUTLINE Business with Economics Intermediate Microeconomics The unit covers microeconomics concepts by using economic theory to analyse major issues. It aims to provide students with an objective economic framework with which to analyse real economic issues at a local, national and global level. Intermediate Macroeconomics The purpose of this unit is to develop a working knowledge of intermediate macroeconomic model building relating to the determinants of macroeconomic equilibrium and short-run fluctuations. This material is related to important policy issues and consideration is given to the theoretical basis for economic policy interventions. The unit aims to develop a working knowledge of intermediate macroeconomic theory and undertakes an examination of the areas of economic theory relating to the determination of macroeconomic equilibrium and short-run fluctuations. Students will be able to appreciate the importance of the insights of intermediate macroeconomic theory for policy debates. Economics of Development This unit examines the economic development of the world economy in the twentieth century and beyond and aims to examine the essential features and characteristics of the developing countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia by exploring: the main theories of the development process and the role of economic analysis in understanding poverty, growth and development; alternatives policies and strategies designed to promote growth and development, including the international dimension; demographic factors in the development process; the international dimension of development, competitiveness, globalisation and the role of international institutions; the relationship between democracy and development and the role of governance and the state in the twenty-first century. Business with Finance Management International Business Finance and Trade Management in the international business environment that contemporary companies face involves a fundamental knowledge of the key financial issues of raising capital, exchange rate management, working capital management and the key documents needed for international trade. The unit is designed from a real world relevant point of view, examining practical situations, with real world cases being used in seminars to highlight issues. Finance, Financial Markets and Institutions There has been immense change in the financial sector over the past few years and the purpose of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of the institutions, markets and products that comprise the financial sector, detailing their interrelationships and interdependencies; their activities and operations and the current issues that affect and shape them. It also considers the current regulatory framework within which they operate. Contemporary Corporate Reporting The aim of this unit is to equip students with the ability to comprehensively understand corporate reports. As end users of published financial statements, students must be able to critically evaluate the quality of the information given in these reports. International Finance and Financial Management Financial Management for international companies involves not only examining the fundamentals of investment choice, capital structure and dividend decisions, but also the continuously changing international environment. This unit is designed to allow the student to show an appreciation of some of the most pressing contemporary financial issues facing companies today in the international environment as well as to be able to apply the impact of these to the creation of wealth and value by managers. Markets and Competition This unit will develop students microeconomic skills and analytical reasoning through analysis of strategies firms use to compete and maximise their profit. It will also consider the role of government regulation and competition policy on markets with imperfect competition. After this unit, students will be able to both understand how firms compete, and how the regulatory framework the firms operate in shapes their strategies and tactics. Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

9 UNIT OUTLINE Business with Human Resource Management Human Resource Management in Practice This unit is designed to introduce students to the range of practical skills required by HR professionals, building on their understanding of the basic conceptual notions in the field (particularly the human resource management cycle, managing diversity, strategic HRM and internationalisation). Students will engage in a variety of practical tasks and with a range of HR and related professionals (e.g. Trade Union officers). These will be informed by current best practice and in accordance with current Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) guidance, practices and procedures within organisations. Change, Work and Diversity The unit aims to introduce students to theoretical and practical approaches to Managing Change, Values, Ethics and Diversity and the role of Change Leadership in meeting organisational HRM&D aims, objectives and strategies. It will introduce stakeholder and issues management frameworks as practical methods for identifying and evaluating organisational situations and events and encourage in students a questioning, reflective and analytical approach. The unit will also enable students to successfully apply their theoretical learning to an identified organisational context of their choice and provide a range of considered organisational intervention recommendations. Rewarding Relationships This unit aims to deliver a critical and relevant overview of the purposes and practices of reward management and employment relations. By the end of the unit students should be able to design reward practices against objectives and to consider and balance the implications of those practices for competing sets of organisational interests. The unit s learning activities focus upon the integration of knowledge and skill-based activities, specifically: the development of a reward system that reflects contemporary innovations, and its implementation through appropriate employment relations practices such as negotiation and compromise. Employee Resourcing and Development This unit aims to develop students critical knowledge and understanding of how R&D can add value and enhance organisational effectiveness and sustainability. The unit will explore the effective integration of R&D in managing the interests of stakeholders in the development, design, delivery and evaluation of the R&D strategies and processes within an organisational context. The unit examines the integration of R&D to facilitate the achievement of organisations strategic objectives in the development and management of organisational knowledge and capacity building. Business with International Management Global Supply Chain Management The unit will use a wide range of learning tools and strategies to develop an understanding of this integrated approach to business, and to do this effectively it will be supported by contribution from the industry itself. The exciting challenges facing practitioners in supply chain management will be highlighted and particular emphasis will be placed on the role of the supply chain in multinational corporations and e-businesses. The role of marketing, procurement, operations management, IS and logistics will all be discussed in a variety of contexts and cross-disciplinary case studies will be a key feature of the unit. Change, Work and Diversity The unit aims to introduce students to theoretical and practical approaches to Managing Change, Values, Ethics and Diversity and the role of Change Leadership in meeting organisational HRM&D aims, objectives and strategies. Doing Business Globally and Internationally The unit focuses on the issues that are important in International Business to Business transactions and relationships. The unit concentrates on the similarities and differences that exist within business cultures in the three most important geographic regions. The unit also recognises the financial management issues that organisations face when developing new relationships. The identification of new partners, the negotiation process, collaboration issues and the termination of agreements are central to the unit. Global Marketing and Communication This unit examines different concepts of international marketing within today s dynamic world trading environment and analyses the differences within aspects of domestic and international marketing planning. Whilst there will be clear links to international business, the unit will concentrate on international marketing issues with a heavy emphasis placed upon the challenges of marketing communication in the global market place and in particular international advertising. The study of theoretical frameworks underpins the unit, but with an emphasis on application to a variety of contexts. 08

10 UNIT OUTLINE Business with Logistics and Supply Chain Management CIPS Global Supply Chain Management The unit will use a wide range of learning tools and strategies to develop an understanding of this integrated approach to business and to do this effectively it will be supported by contribution from the industry itself. The exciting challenges facing practitioners in supply chain management will be highlighted and particular emphasis will be placed on the role of the supply chain in multinational corporations and e-businesses. The role of marketing, procurement, operations management, IS and logistics will all be discussed in a variety of contexts and cross-disciplinary case studies will be a key feature of the unit. Transport and Inventory Management This unit provides students with an understanding of the key elements of national and international transport, how different forms of transport combine and operate to move goods and people around the world and how goods can be effectively and efficiently ordered, stored, dispatched and delivered. It will provide students with an appreciation of the institutional challenges, tensions and future opportunities for growth within supply and distribution systems and encourage students to use their business management skills developed throughout previous study to contribute to the formative and summative assessment of the unit. Strategic Supply Chain Management This unit aims to develop the ability to apply strategic thinking to contemporary issues impacting upon supply chain management and provide a thorough understanding of the tools and techniques necessary to analyse, evaluate and implement best practice supply chain solutions. At the end of the unit, the student will be able to critically evaluate supply chain management strategies in a range of organisation types against current best practice in this fast-moving field of study and demonstrate significant knowledge & understanding of appropriate tools and techniques of analysis necessary in the evaluation of supply chain & operational effectiveness. Innovation and IT in the Supply Chain The aim of this unit is to create an appreciation of the synergy between innovation and technology management as well as information technology (IT) in global supply networks. It focuses on innovation and technology management processes that add value throughout the development, production and delivery of services and products in supply networks and the tools needed to manage these processes effectively. In addition, the unit aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of modern approaches to innovation and technology management as well as IT approaches throughout supply networks. On completion of the unit, participants will be able to critically analyse the approaches to managing innovation and technologies as well as IT used by leading-edge companies operating on a global scale. CILT Business with Marketing Management Marketing Planning and Research This unit aims to provide guidance to future marketers to put together an overall marketing plan. It distinguishes between a company s corporate/business plan and marketing plans. Understanding the techniques and uses of Marketing Research and how the company should gather and use information is crucial to the planning process. Students will also learn how to combine all the elements of the marketing mix, in order to penetrate, capture and maintain competitive positions in identified key markets. The unit also clarifies the roles managers play at each stage of marketing planning to achieve overall corporate goals. Change, Work and Diversity This unit aims to introduce students to theoretical and practical approaches to managing change, values, ethics and diversity and the role of change leadership in meeting organisational HRM&D aims, objectives and strategies. It will introduce stakeholder and issues management frameworks as practical methods for identifying and evaluating organisational situations and events, and encourage in students a questioning, reflective and analytical approach. The unit will also enable students to successfully apply their theoretical learning to an identified organisational context of their choice and provide a range of considered organisational intervention recommendations. Buyer Behaviour and Integrated Marketing Communications This unit brings together two important and closely related areas of study for marketing and business students, namely understanding how buyers behave and make decisions and how to use this knowledge to effectively communicate with selected target markets. The study of theoretical frameworks underpins the unit, which is then applied to a variety of buyer and business contexts. Lectures are used to impart the theory and the seminars are a mix of practical and case study applications and academic material designed to encourage the application of theory and critical thinking. The assessment provides the student with the opportunity to utilise the theoretical frameworks in a hypothetical business scenario of the student s choice. Marketing Management and Strategy This unit will extend students knowledge and understanding of marketing, acquired from their introductory unit into the management area (approach and application). They will learn to apply the principles and techniques of marketing management across a wide range of goods and services in different markets. Students will learn to use models that help marketing managers to make more informed decisions (e.g. new product development, brand repositioning, deletion, sales-force management and communication techniques).
