ISBN: Available online at Course Description: Environmental engineers rely upon a succession of unit operations when designing treatments that remove contaminants from air, water or soil. This course focuses on the fundamental chemical, physical, and biological processes that comprise unit operations commonly employed in environmental engineering. Consideration of these processes will enable rational design and effective assessment of selected unit operations.

2 Audience: Environmental Engineering Processes will benefit students who are interested in processes or unit operations commonly employed to control air and water pollution. The course is designed for undergraduate learners pursuing a degree in environmental engineering, or a related discipline. Subsequent senior-level courses build upon various aspects of the material presented in this course to design water and wastewater treatment plants, air pollution controls, and environmental restorations. Overall Objective: Acquire a thorough understanding of the chemical, physical and biological principles which govern the design, operation, and performance assessment of those unit operations commonly employed in environmental engineering. Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to: apply reactor models for quantitative description of environmental processes model kinetic exchange processes occurring in multiphase systems assess the influence chemistry, flow, gravity, and mixing on the stability of suspensions calculate electron donor/acceptor requirements in biological treatment systems identify appropriate assumptions, and the implications of over or under simplifying the analysis of environmental processes Engineering degree programs are accredited based upon criteria established by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). These criteria require that Engineering programs must demonstrate that their graduates have: a. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering b. an ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data c. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs d. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams e. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems f. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility g. an ability to communicate effectively h. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global/societal context i. a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in lifelong learning j. a knowledge of contemporary issues k. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice CEE 132 is designed to meet the specific outcomes described above and contributes to program outcomes a, b, c, e, g, h, i, j, and k. CEE 132 contributes major emphasis those program outcomes which are shown in bold type. Grading: Homework 30% (six to seven assignments throughout the term) Labs 30% (six labs throughout the term) Midterm Exam 20% (1:30 p.m. Wednesday 09 March 2011) Final Exam 20% (12:00 p.m. Monday 09 May 2011)

3 Course Policies Homework: I invite you to collaborate on homework assignments; however, each student is responsible for learning the material and submitting his/her own work. If you chose to work in groups you must include a list of the individuals with whom you have collaborated. Homework submittals should be neat and organized. Use a clean sheet of paper (preferably engineering paper) to start each problem. State all assumptions. You are expected to turn assignments in on time. Homework assignments submitted after the deadline will be subject to a penalty of 20% (of the assignment value) per business day up to one week. Note that after one week, students are no longer eligible to receive credit for the assignment. Any deviations from this policy will be noted when the problem set is assigned. All reference materials used to complete the assignment (journal articles, websites, personal communications, etc) should be referenced. Failure to appropriately cite the contributions of others, including reference materials, will be viewed as a violation of Tufts policy for academic integrity which is available through the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs ( If you have any questions regarding the citation of source material, please discuss it with the instructor prior to submitting your work. Laboratory: Laboratory activities are collaborative. On time arrival is critical. Your lab group will not be permitted to begin the experiment until all members are present (or have otherwise notified Prof. Ramsburg). Your group will be responsible for writing and submitting a collaborative lab report before the submission deadline (5:00 pm on the Tuesday following the lab). Submissions will be electronic. Your group will submit a polished, professional document in the form of a pdf to the location specified by the instructor. Lab reports will not be accepted after the 5:00 pm deadline. Collaboration outside the members of your lab group (i.e., with other lab groups) is prohibited and will be viewed as a violation of Tufts policy for academic integrity which is available through the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs as noted above. Please note that the policy for academic integrity also contains a section on plagiarism. I expect you to cite all sources (journal articles, websites, personal communications, etc.) used to complete the laboratory reports. If you have any questions regarding the citation of source material, please discuss it with the instructor prior to submitting your work. Exams: Exams are not group activities.
