3 We have now reached about 20 years of con5nuous measurements from space for many geophysical parameters (even 30 years for some parameters) à Earth Observa5on data are becoming an essen5al tool for Earth Science à Long term series of data needed for several applica5ons in different Earth Science domains Long Term Data Preservation: the need

7 LTDP Key Aspects Preserva'on of EO data but also of all associated informa'on (documenta'on, CAL/VAL databases, algorithms, etc). Completeness and coherency among all elements to be preserved to ensure present and future exploitability. Data Quality, Context and Provenance (documented). Maintenance of capabili'es to (re- )generate data products. Harmonized data and informa'on accessibility. Coordinated and coherent approach in Europe. Preservation has to be addressed in all phases of a mission starting from its design. Incremental approach for past and current missions, systematic planning and approach for future missions.

9 European LTDP Framework coordination: LTDP Working Group (1) ESA is coordina'ng the LTDP coopera'on ac'vi'es in the Earth Observa'on domain with European partners through the LTDP WG formed within the Ground Segment Coordina'on Body (GSCB). Implemented the basic rules of the European LTDP Framework in Earth Observa'on: LTDP Common Guidelines and Preserved Data Set Content ü Reflec'ng the consensus of the European EO Data providers. ü Reviewed at GEO, CEOS and with NASA. ü Being reviewed with QA4EO. New Issues available by end of June 2012
10 Defined the ini'al data set to be preserved, including the related glossary. Started several technical ac'vi'es: ü LTDP User Requirements Study (FIRST) ü Archive Technology Study (LAST) ü LTDP Ini'a'ves and Standards Survey ü LTDP/QA4EO Study ü LTDP Architecture Defini'on Project European LTDP Framework coordination: LTDP Working Group (2) Guaranteed the informa'on flow through workshops, web sites, par'cipa'on to conferences and LTDP related events. Coopera0on amongst European space actors is essen0al to preserve all needed EO data for the future

14 Approved at ESA CMIN 2008 for a period of 3 years in order to: 1. Prevent ESA and ESA managed TPM EO data loss and enhance accessibility à Implementa0on most urgent ac0ons 2. Start the implementa'on of the LTDP infrastructure needed for data and associated informa'on management à Evolu0on ac0vi0es Both in support of the most urgent needs (e.g. CCI) ESA EO LTDP Preliminary Programme: Iden'fy the minimum dataset content to be preserved and define the LTDP architecture for efficient preserva'on and accessibility of the ESA EO data and associated informa'on in the long term à Analysis and studies 4. Define & reinforce a common approach for LTDP in Europe à European LTDP framework coordina0on 5. Prepare the LTDP Programme proposal for the period beyond à LTDP programme prepara0on

16 Covering the period beyond 2013, will be submi\ed to ESA Ministerial Council in Nov 2012 within ESA mandatory ac'vi'es. Objec've to guarantee long term preserva'on, access and exploita'on of data, and associated knowledge, archived at ESA facili'es and generated by ESA and ESA- managed Third Party missions in ALL fields of space Science ü ESA LTDP Future Programme (1) Implemented in coopera'on among Earth Observa'on, Science and Human Spaceflight ESA directorates. It will ensure the consolida'on, preserva'on and accessibility of ESA data records and associated knowledge for any future use. Covering preserva'on and data access for EO missions star'ng five years ager end of life (e.g. ERS- 1 immediately, ERS- 2 from 2016).
17 ESA LTDP Future Programme (2) It will enable and support ESA s and European Exploita'on Programmes and ac'vi'es requiring long term data series (e.g. Climate Change Ini'a've) or the u'liza'on of old data holdings in the long term (e.g. in astronomy for change detec'on in stars, pre- ISS missions in Life & Physical Sciences) and to support new missions. Implemented in coordina'on with other space science data owners in Europe aiming at coherently preserve all European space data and associated informa'on.

19 Needs and challenges related to LTDP of EO data are well iden'fied Coopera'on in Europe in the EO LTDP domain is producing remarkable results EO LTDP Preliminary Programme is allowing the: ü Implementa'on of essen'al ac'vi'es at ESA facili'es for data loss preven'on. ü Coordina'on of LTDP ac'vi'es, with the involvement of all European data owners and archive holders, and LTDP basic principles consolida'on and promo'on. ESA LTDP programme for the period will: Conclusions ü Ensure preserva'on of all ESA Science data with a common approach across the Agency and with Member States. ü Provide new opportuni'es for European Users, Operators and Value Adders. ü Significantly contribute to the future of science (and in par'cular Earth Science).
