2 Registration Information About Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education The Cherry Creek School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are pleased to offer the highest quality programs to meet both college and workplace standards. The CTE Building is located on the northwest side of the Cherry Creek High School Campus. Courses at Pickens Technical College and some select out-of-district programs are also available (see next pages). All CTE programs require an application. Students interested in any of the CTE courses listed in this catalog are encouraged to obtain information by contacting the CTE office: Cherry Creek School District Career and Technical Education 9150 E. Union Avenue Greenwood Village, CO Enrollment Process Step 1: Gather all relevant information via course catalogs, brochures, phone calls, s and meetings. Step 2: Complete an application for admission. This application may be found at: or at each high school counseling office. If you do not have an application and would like one, please call Step 3: Take completed application to the home high school counselor and discuss. Step 4: Counselors send in completed applications to the Cherry Creek CTE office no later than March 6, Late applications will be accepted based upon availability. Course times are based on current information and are subject to change. Concurrent Enrollment Concurrent Enrollment Many of the courses Cherry Creek CTE offer are Concurrent Enrollment courses. The following are answers to frequently asked questions about this program: Q: What is the Concurrent Enrollment Program? A: CCSD students receive both high school credit and college credit for Concurrent Enrollment classes. Students begin building a college transcript while they complete their high school graduation requirements. Students must receive a grade of C or better to receive transferable college credit. Q: What s the cost? A: Tuition is paid by Cherry Creek Schools and the College Opportunity Fund (That s over $250 savings per class!). Q: What is COF (College Opportunity Fund)? A: All students must apply for COF. The COF stipend pays a portion of a student s tuition. All students must complete an application for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) at: cof.college-assist.org. Q: Am I eligible for the Concurrent Enrollment Program? A: High school students can take Concurrent Enrollment classes. Q: Is this right for me? Will my credits transfer? A: The Concurrent Enrollment Program creates options for students still in high school. It prepares students for the rigor and culture of college. Students build a college transcript while still in high school. Students may transfer their college credits to any two or four-year college or university. 3 B.E.T.A (BUSINESS EDUCATION TRANSITION ALLIANCE) OPEN TO GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: Semester CREDITS:.5 FEES: To be determined at student s home high school The BETA program is a work-based alliance for students with special needs and students who are at-risk. The BETA program will coordinate a specially designed learning experience to include workplace skills. It will meet the needs of the students within a flexible environment. The class allows students to earn credit through career exploration and community connections. The program introduces students to a number of career opportunities through job shadows, internships and skill-building experiences. The BETA program goals: 1. Place students in career pathway experiences 2. Prepare students for the workforce 3. Locate entry level job opportunities for high school students approaching graduation 4. Expose students to post high school training in their career interest area 5. Partner with Denver Metro employers to provide work ready employees FASHION DESIGN 1 & 2 OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Year CREDITS: 1 FEES: $10/Semester LOCATIONS/TIME: Ames Facility (Littleton Public Schools) 7:30-9:30 am T and Th Fashion Design is a year-long career pathway program introducing students to the many facets of the fashion design industry and how they are integrated with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Students begin the semester looking at textiles, studying fabrics and surface design. Students complete a career project/display board as they explore the range of career pathways within the fashion industry. Next we study the history of American fashion starting in the 1920 s. The elements and principles of design as they relate to fashion are examined along with fashion trends, drawing, basic garment silhouettes, and construction details. Basic garment construction is also integrated with a sewing project. During second semester, students will explore the marketing and merchandising side of fashion. The fashion capitals of the world are examined revealing the global perspective of the industry. Textile fibers are also studied. Next, students take a fashion product from concept to consumer, prototyping their product, and creating a design portfolio representing their knowledge of the design process. The fashion cycle, advanced clothing construction, and green design are also explored. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY I OPEN TO GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 1 FEES: OVERLAND HS: 7:10-8:50 B/Blue Days M, T, Th, F W 7:55-9:25 SMOKY HILL HS: 12:55-2:30 B/Green Days M, T, Th, F W 1:05-2:30 This course teaches the principles and fundamentals of automotive systems and the safe use of hand and power tools, instruments, and test equipment. A full year of study involves the following systems: cooling, power train, brakes, lubrication, alignment, starting/ charging, electrical, ignition, fuel, and suspension systems. Emphasis is placed on safe working practices, preventive maintenance, basic trouble shooting/diagnosis, and tune-up procedures. These will take place through classroom and laboratory learning experiences.. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY II OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Year CREDITS: 1 FEES: $50 PREREQUISITES: Automotive Technology I SMOKY HILL HS: 7:10-10:27 B/Green Days M, T, Th, F W 7:45-10:42 OVERLAND HS: 1:05-2:45 B/Blue Days M, T, Th, F W 1:15-2:45 ARAPAHOE COMMUNITY COLLEGE: (with CTE Coordinator Approval) A NATEF certified course for those students interested in the auto mechanics field. It is an in-depth study of the design, maintenance and repair of the automobile. Engine performance and electronics will be highlighted in this class. This course aligns with the Colorado Community College courses ASE 123 Automotive Electrical and ASE 150 Automotive U-Joint & Axle services. Students will explore the concepts and principles of aviation and delve into general practices of the aerospace field. Areas of study are aviation history, pilot training, airplane structure, engines, basic aerodynamics, flight environment, airports, aviation weather, and navigation. In addition, the course exposes the student to the history of manned space flight. Topics range from how to achieve a private pilot license to careers at NASA. Former students are currently employed in careers such as air traffic controllers, airline and military pilots, and aircraft mechanics. Instruction includes lecture, discussion, and computer-based flight simulator programs. This course introduces topics necessary for the FAA Private Pilot Exam. The class also participates in various field trips to places such as Peterson Air Force Base, Centennial Airport, NORAD, and the United Airlines Training flight simulator. An aviation club is also associated with the class. This college level course is taught by a Metro State University professor and prepares the student for taking the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot Knowledge Examination. Students will be enrolled in the 6 credit hour Metro State University course Aviation Fundamentals (AES 1100). Students will need to provide their own transportation to the Metro State University South Metro campus. Additional application materials and qualifying scores are required. TEACHER CADET OPEN TO GRADE: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 1 FEES: LOCATION/TIMES: Overland HS: 1:05 2:45 B Days M, T, Th, F 1:15 2:45 W The Teacher Cadet program is an innovative program that introduces high school students to the teaching profession. Students will explore the learner, the school, and the role of the teacher through exciting hands-on activities, guest speakers, field trips, 50 hours of both classroom and other school observations, job shadowing, and cooperative learning situations. During second semester, students will participate in an extended field experience in which the cadets will work closely with a cooperative teacher for 8-10 weeks. The cadet will be immersed in the classroom experience by helping students one-on-one or in large groups, plan lessons, grade, create, and teach. This rewarding experience will also help cadets earn hours for education programs at the college level. Each cadet will work on a portfolio throughout the entire year. Additional Teacher Cadet Application required The Cherry Creek School District will make every attempt to provide transportation to and from classes at the Pickens Technical College for morning classes only. For all other classes, students will need to provide their own transportation or ride RTD buses. The District may provide bus passes to those CCSD students who will use RTD. This course will also explore how constitutional and procedural law assists the crime science process including evidence processing and related criminalistics procedures. Field trips to local criminal justice and crime science agencies support student learning experiences. This course aligns with Colorado Community College System Crime Scene Investigation (CRJ 127). LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 2 FEES: $75 COURSE LENGTH: 1 year LOCATION/TIMES: CTE BUILDING: 1:45-3:15 M-F This dynamic, hands-on, project-oriented photography class challenges students to think critically, learn professionalism, and produce critically acclaimed art. Assigned projects prepare students to strengthen their creative eye and see life from a different perspective. Students learn both film & digital photography, use a darkroom, as well as learn the industry standard, professional software: Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Students will explore career possibilities, develop a resume, and meet photographers, all while preparing for college and industry. The course will include understanding the commercial photography business, composition theory, digital ethics, and competition events where students produce a portfolio and earn concurrent enrollment credit. Concurrent Enrollment is available with Arapahoe Community College s course MGD 111. Students will learn about the agencies and processes involved in the criminal justice system: the legislature, the police, the prosecutor, the public defender, the courts, and corrections. The course includes an analysis of the roles and problems of the criminal justice system in a democratic society, with an emphasis upon inter-component relations and checks and balances. Field trips to local criminal justice and law enforcement agencies support student learning experiences. This course aligns with Colorado Community College Intro to Criminal Justice (CRJ 110). DIGITAL COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OPEN TO GRADE: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 1 FEES: $50 COURSE LENGTH: 1 year LOCATION/TIMES: CTE BUILDING: 7:10-8:01 am M-F This class provides each student with a digital DSLR camera to use all year; students will explore the realm of Commercial Photography learning Adobe Photoshop CS6 & Lightroom 4 while producing both individual/team fun projects! This is a great course to learn digital commercial photography with an emphasis of Career & Technical Education theory. The course will include understanding the commercial photography business, composition theory, digital ethics, and competition events where students produce a portfolio and earn concurrent enrollment credit. Concurrent Enrollment is available with Arapahoe Community College s course MGD 111 Career & Technical Education 5

6 PRO START 1 & 2 Colorado ProStart is a high school hospitality education program of the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation, the Colorado Restaurant Association, and the Colorado Hotel & Lodging Association. ProStart is a two-year foodservice and hospitality management curriculum offered to high school juniors and seniors. Students can take ProStart 1 or ProStart 2 first, they do not need to be taken in order. The objective of the ProStart program is to provide an industry-driven curriculum that prepares students for a career in restaurant and foodservice management. The curriculum provides the following benefits to students: comprehensive coverage of culinary and management topics; an industry-infused approach; pedagogy that supports 21st century learning; relevant and timely topics from global cuisines to sustainability; content aligned to certificates and ProStart program opportunities. Students have the opportunity to become ServSafe Food Safety certified. The ProStart classroom partners with industry professionals who come to school to work with and mentor students during class and offer outside opportunities. Students have opportunities for mentored internships, advanced placement in many colleges, universities, and culinary schools, scholarship opportunities, certification from passing the National Exams and meeting all program requirements. NEW in 2014/2015, seven concurrent enrollment credits are now available through Metro State University of Denver. This has an optional fee. With successful completion of ProStart 2, students can continue on to ProStart 1. 6 EXECUTIVE INTERNSHIP OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Semester CREDITS: 1.5 (half day) or 3 (full day) credits INTERNSHIP HOURS: 14 hrs or 28 hrs per week LOCATION: Grandview High School and Internship This program will provide students with the opportunity to apply for interesting and challenging internships that will take them ahead of the competition! Selected students will spend a semester with an executive or professional in the field of their choice. Within each internship, students can expect to do various work assignments, attend meetings, complete projects, all while applying the skills and knowledge they have gained in their education. Students should be above average academically or especially talented in the career area they wish to pursue. Professional success also depends on the level of student s maturity, responsibility and reliability. Internships are unpaid. This program is selective, and additional application materials and an interview are required. 7 PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH SCIENCE OPEN TO GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 1 FEES: $25 Overland High School 7:10 8:49 A/Green Days M, T, Th, F This course aligns with the Colorado Community College courses CPR for Professionals (HPR 102) and Medical Terminology (HPR 178). This course is designed to provide students an advanced level of knowledge and skills related to health careers with emphasis on service within the health care industry. Furthermore, this course introduces students to major terms related to body systems, oncology, psychiatry as well as clinical and diagnostic services. This course meets the requirements for the American Heart Association (CPR) certification for health care professionals. All students must provide proof of immunizations and testing for tuberculosis is required by healthcare professions. EPIC MEDICAL CAREERS OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Semester CREDITS:.5 FEES: $40 Cherry Creek HS, Shillinglaw Lecture Center: 6:00am-6:55am M- Th Smoky Hill HS, Lecture Center: 6:00am-6:55am M- Th In the EPIC Medical Careers class students are introduced to career opportunities through a unique series of lectures by medical professionals. Each morning students will hear from professionals from the medical community such as a plastic surgeon, bio-chemical warfare emergency room doctor, a nurse at Denver Health talking about infectious diseases, a genetic counselor, a pediatrician, X-Ray and optical technicians, as well as professionals from the business (medical sales) and the legal (a lawyer who represents doctors) careers related to medicine. Students are presented information about each specialty along with the education and other requirements for the many career options. Students may participate in a field trip to a cadaver lab or medical school to see how medical professionals are learning as well as be a part of an emergency room simulation, labor/delivery simulation, and a cadaver lab to which students will see the human body and internal organs. ADVANCED HEALTH SCIENCE OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 year CREDITS: 1 FEES: $35 Overland High School 1:05-2:45 B/Blue Days M, T, Th, F W 1:15-2:45 During the first semester students explore the healthcare industry and begin to lay the foundation for an entry level career. The rigorous curriculum includes: basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health care systems, medical legal and ethical issues, and health career exploration. Students will be exposed to experts in the industry through guest speakers and field trips. Individual career pathways are developed during the second semester. Students may participate in the Nurse Aide Program, individual internships or other health career training opportunities. Professional portfolio development, employment skills and leadership training through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) are emphasized during the second semester. This course aligns with the Colorado Community College courses Law & Ethics for Health Professionals (HPR 106). All students must provide proof of immunizations and testing for tuberculosis is required by healthcare professions HEALTH SCIENCES OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Year CREDITS: 2 FEES: $280 - $340 Ames Facility (Littleton Public Schools) 1st Sem: 7:30-9:30 am or 12:30-2:30 pm M-F 2nd Sem: 7:00-9:45 am or 12:00-2:45 pm M-F for Nurse Aid 7:30-9:30 or 12:30-2:30 M-F for Internship Biology preferred as a prerequisite. The Littleton Health Sciences Program is a comprehensive two-semester course based on the National Consortium for Health Sciences Education standards. During the first semester students explore the healthcare industry and begin to lay the foundation for an entry level career. The rigorous curriculum includes: basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health care systems, medical legal and ethical issues, and health career exploration. Students will be exposed to experts in the industry through guest speakers and field trips. Individual career pathways are developed during the second semester. Students may participate in the Nurse Aide Program or an Internship program. Professional portfolio development, employment skills and leadership training through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) are emphasized during the second semester. College credit is available. A visit is required as part of the application process. NURSE AIDE CERTIFICATION OPEN TO GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Semester CREDITS:.5 FEES: $185 for State Exam, scrubs, and gate belt PREREQUISITE: Completion or Concurrent Enrollment in Advanced Health Science To Be Determined The Nurse Aide Certification Course is designed to give students practical application in nurse aide skills to pass the National Certification exam to obtain employment. Through partnerships students complete course work and clinical experiences that are a required element as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Flexibility in student schedule is important as the clinical experience may be outside the school day. Students must be 16 years of age and at least a junior. Furthermore, students must provide proof of immunizations and testing for tuberculosis and pass a criminal background check before placement. Additional application and spring informational meeting required. Students must show valid proof of residency (proof a parent has been in the state for at least one year) and a state issued form of identification. Career & Technical Education 7
