10 At-a-glance view of the environment 1. Navigate to the dashboard for overview of the virtual datacenter 2. Customize dashboard using the Configure View option 3. Preview alerts pertaining to hosts, virtual machines and datastores 4. Get combined view CPU & memory utilization for hosts and VMs 5. View capacity in terms VMs deployed versus available 6. See various virtualized resources reaching capacity in the next few days 7. Identify VM sprawl symptoms by monitoring VM count graph 8. Identify top datastores and VMs with IO high latency and top datatstore by free space

11 Visualize performance 1. Treemap provides visual representation of the performance of virtualized resources (data centers, hosts, clusters, VMs, datastores, etc.) 2. Detect if larger resources are efficiently utilized and smaller resources are over utilized just by looking at the treemap; Size of the box represents capacity and color represents utilization 3. Hover the mouse on a resource to see the utilization versus capacity 4. See resource utilization based on varied parameters (CPU, CPU ready percent, memory, latency, etc.) for each resource type using the navigation buttons in the dashboard

12 Identify hotspots 1. Highlight top-5 or bottom-5 resources based on utilization in the treemap based to see only interesting elements 2. Quickly find a specific element (example: a host, VM, datastore, etc.) using the search option 3. Identify optimally utilized resources using the spectrum transition value; Change the value at which the utilization color changes from green to yellow and from yellow to red (example: highlight datastores in yellow to red color range for which utilization is above 80 percent)

13 Study trends and look for interesting data 1. Verify if the observed symptom is a temporary anomaly or a persistent one by just moving the Data as of slider 2. See interesting performance aspects and identify bottlenecks using the Filter (example: filter and show hosts with CPU utilization greater than 80 percent) Now 10 minutes earlier

14 Group elements to see patterns in behavior Troubleshoot VM storage latency issues 1. Group the VMs according to datastore to visually observe patterns and get a neighborhood view 2. Observe many VMs in one datastore are having high storage latency 3. Select the group and launch Workbench for highlighted group 4. Select all the VMs and graph DiskReadRate & DiskWriteRate metrics to see IOPS of all the VMs 5. Notice that one VM (ruby) is performing high disk IO operations which could affect the performance of other VMs in the same datastore

15 Drilldown into VM to identify greedy application 1. Identify the VM (ruby) in the treemap performing high disk IOPS and launch real rime guest OS drilldown 2. Look for the most significant process by CPU or memory in the process cloud 3. Obtain in-depth performance metrics by clicking on the process name; observe high disk IO rates 4. Go to Processes tab to view the top processes on CPU or memory 5. Go to System Events tab; search for any relevant system or application events 6. Go to Applications tab; observe an application (dbmng) is high on disk IO rate

16 Detect anomalies using alerts 1. Launch Performance/Alerts 2. Anomalies detected in the environment are reported as alerts 3. Reports resource saturation and performance bottleneck symptoms like Host CPU Saturation, Host CPU Contention, VM CPU Saturation, VM Misconfiguration, Host Memory Saturation, Host High or Abnormal Memory Usage, VM High Memory Usage, Host High Disk IO Latency, Low Datastore Free space, etc. 3. Look into the alert report for symptom, possible causes and recommendations to remediate the cause 4. Use context relevant report in each alert to investigate 5. Use quick filter and search capabilities in the alert inbox

17 Measure usage and allocation versus capacity 1. Launch Capacity/Overview 2. See capacity, usage and allocation for CPU, memory and storage at domain level; Identify VM sprawl symptoms by looking at VM activity pie chart 3. See CPU and memory available for allocation, usage and reclaimable info at datacenter, cluster and host level 4. Obtain tangible remaining capacity in terms of new VMs that can be created 5. See storage available for allocation for datastores 6. Drilldown to host to see top VMs by CPU and memory utilization; drilldown to VM to see CPU, memory usage trends, CPU contention details and latency

18 Gather data on reclaimable resources 1. Launch Capacity/Overview 2. See CPU and memory reclaimable info for datacenter, cluster and host 3. See storage space reclaimable for datastores 4. VM CPU and memory sizing provides recommendations for over sized and under sized VMs 5. The CPU and memory sizing page shows the sizing recommendation for the VMs, based on the historical resource usage 6. Pie-chart graphically represents the number of VMs right-sized, oversized and under-sized

19 Detect health and reclaimable resources for a host 1. Select host in the treemap to be examined and launch Capacity Usage Trends to see overall health and performance of the host 2. See capacity, usage and allocation for CPU, memory and storage 3. See top 10 VMs on the host in terms of CPU and memory utilization 4. The table provides the recommended allocation of CPU and memory for each host and the corresponding reclaimable data

20 Find the right resource allocation for a VM 1. Select VM in the treemap to be examined and launch Capacity Usage Trends to see overview of the resource utilization and performance of the VM 2. See graphs for CPU, memory utilization, CPU contention metrics (co-stop, demand, ready time) and storage latency metric trends help in managing contention issues 3. The Remarks section provides detailed recommendation on reclaiming unused resources or adding resources to avoid performance degradation and to achieve better host to VM consolidation ration

21 Reclaim space and uphold health of a datastore 1. Select datastore in the treemap to be examined and launch Capacity Usage Trends to see its capacity, usage and allocation 2. See pie charts for space utilization by file types, top 5 VMs by disk usage and also activity status of VMs (idle, active, powered off or deleted) 3. The table lists activity status, space provisioned, disk usage and latency metrics for each VM in the datastore 4. The remarks section provides recommendation on reclaiming space and actions required to uphold health of the datastore

22 Analyze and plan capacity for future VM workloads 1. Launch Capacity/Modeler to run what-if scenarios 2. Select a cluster on which new VMs need to be deployed, select Add new VMs action, enter the number of VMs required, VM configuration & demand details 3. Enter the start date if VMs need to be created on a future date; enter the end date if the VMs are required only for a specific period 4. Add more actions (if required) and click on Run Scenario to analyze it 5. The result badges report if new capacity can be accommodated in the cluster or not 6. See if new requirement can be met partially and for how many VMs 6. Forecast shows the impact of the new VMs in resource utilization and shortfall for CPU, memory and storage (if any)

23 Find means to optimize cluster capacity 1. Launch Capacity/Modeler to run what-if scenarios 2. Select a cluster to be optimized by removing hosts 3. Select host that need to be removed; if host needs to be removed for maintenance, enter start and end dates 4. Add more actions (if required) and click on Run Scenario to analyze it 5. The result badges report if the reduced capacity can meet the existing requirement or not and for how many days 6. Forecast shows the impact of the action in terms of before and after and reports maximum shortfall for CPU, memory and storage (if any) 7. If cluster can accommodate the existing workload by removing the host, the host can be used elsewhere where there is a need

24 Use forecast to plan for resources 1. Launch Capacity/Forecast 2. View and drilldown forecast for CPU, memory and storage utilization for datacenter, cluster, host and VMs 3. Forecast data is represented in graphs Actual (red line) shows utilization for last 90 days, Forecast (blue line) shows forecast data for next 90 days 4. Table for each entity shows maximum resource capacity and days to capacity (number of days in which utilization would ready maximum capacity) 5. Observe forecast projections for 30, 60, 90 days 6. Forecast graph is based on best fit algorithm linear, exponential, logarithmic or power 7. Coefficient of determination (R2) indicates accuracy of forecast

25 Find placement for new virtual machines 1. Launch Capacity/Placement to plan, allocate and optimally use the resources and avoid resource contention issues 2. Enter number of new VMs to created and sizing details in terms of number of vcpus, memory and disk space 3. Select if reclaimable resource can be considered for placement suggestions 4. Add VM placement requests and choose Find Placement 5. The output includes the cluster and datastores on which the VMs can be deployed, corresponding datacenter and the number of VMs that can be added to each placement suggestion

26 Model cluster impact for enclosure maintenance 1. Integrate CO with HP OneView CO monitors the virtualized infrastructure (VMware); HP OneView that manages the physical infrastructure is registered to CO 2. Go to Workbench/Reports and launch Bay Topology for the enclosure that needs to be shutdown for maintenance 3. From the Bay Topology report understand the clusters that has presence on this enclosure 3. Now go to each cluster and launch Risk Analysis report to understand the risk on shutting down the enclosure 4. The report provides the days to capacity score incase of enclosure shutdown and also the shortfall of resources (CPU, memory and storage)
