2 Cloud computing opportunity Cloud computing represents the largest new opportunity in Information Technology (IT) in the next decade Standards development, legislative, and regulatory regimes are required to facilitate the market growth IEEE has a strong and valued standards program New services are required to facilitate federated clouds IEEE houses the expertise to address requirements across a broad range of technical areas Technical knowledge delivered through publications, conferences, and educational products is essential IEEE actively fielding individual conferences in this area IEEE s reputation for educational materials and publications is stellar 2

3 IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative (CCI) IEEE has a history of international community technology acceleration For example, Ethernet IEEE 802 TM standards Many IEEE conferences on networking Publications and academic papers on state of the art and research IEEE Industry Connections programs for cybersecurity and Ethernet bandwidth assessment IEEE Registration Authority for MAC addresses IEEE Smart Grid Initiative Similar Cloud Computing Initiative, described today 3

4 IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative (CCI) IEEE has been providing a venue for cloud-related activities for years Conferences; papers in a variety of journals However, there was no coordinated effort on cloud issues CCI was formed to understand the needs for a more focused IEEE presence Cross-IEEE, multi-disciplinary, global initiative Conferences, Publications, Education and Standards Conducts strategy and planning for how IEEE coordinates activities and develops new areas in Cloud Computing 4

10 IEEE P2301, Draft Guide for Cloud Portability and Interoperability Profiles (CPIP) Most cloud ecosystem participants (cloud vendors, service providers, and users) prefer to align with generally accepted, common, or standardized conventions This guide will examine areas such as application interfaces, portability interfaces, management interfaces, interoperability interfaces, file formats, and operation conventions This guide will group these choices into multiple logical profiles, which are organized to address different cloud personalities Will allow practitioners to reference a formal SDO publication for their business practice Website: 10

11 IEEE P2302, Draft Standard for Intercloud Interoperability & Federation (SIIF) One technical area that needs specific standardsdevelopment leadership is Cloud-to-Cloud federation/interoperability This area requires protocols, directory service, namespace authority, trust authority, and governance coordination This standard creates an economy among cloud providers that is transparent to users and applications This standard will be developed in partnership with real-world test-bed projects Hosted at universities worldwide 11

12 What started IEEE thinking about this stuff? Interoperability is important to the planet! Because clouds are hard to build, the largest companies will build very large clouds, and with them, they will naturally tend to monopolize the way we compute and communicate
