Federating the wireless facilities of OpenLab with wired networks and the cloud Thanasis Korakis CERTH / NITLab University of Thessaly/ Department of Computer and Communication Engineering
OpenLab Project OpenLab brings together the essential ingredients for an open, general purpose and sustainable large scale shared experimental facility, providing advances to the early and successful prototypes serving the demands of Future Internet Research and Experimentation, including several OneLab testbeds.
Wireless facilities of Openlab UTH (NITOS) ETH (.SEL) IBBT (w-ilab.t) Cosmote NICTA
Federating wireless facilities We federate wireless facilities using control and Management Framework (OMF) OMF is a control and management tool that allows the user to describe his/her experiment run the experiment We also use OML though it the experimenter can define "measurement points" he/she can collect measurements in a distributed way manage the measurements filter the measurements store the measurements visualize the measurements
OMF Framework The user submits his experiment to OMF. OMF configures the testbed and begins the experiment execution. OMF collects the experiment results in a database.
OML Database OML is an instrumentation tool that allows application writers to define customizable measurement points inside applications. Experimenters running the applications can then direct the measurement streams from these measurement points to storage in a remote measurement database.
NITOS Testbed NITOS is Openlab's basic wireless testbed Currently NITOS maintains 50 Wi-Fi Nodes An experimental Openflow network 10 of them are equipped with GNU radios All of them are equipped with temperature, humidity, photo sensors and cameras 5 mobile nodes
NITOS Extensions Up to 100 WiFi nodes Extension of the outdoor testbed Development of an indoor(isolated) testbed Addition of an LTE and 3G testbed for testing with real users Development of a vehicular testbed (WiFi/LTE/3G) Cars/Taxis Trains Bicycles (in campus outdoor vehicular testbed)
NITOS Architecture
ICARUS Nodes We have designed and developed new powerful WiFi nodes called ICARUS: Linux based Two WiFi cards with open source drivers Support of MIMO wireless cards
Chassis Manager Card s Sensors Chassis Manager Cards features multiple type of sensors that can be controlled remotely
NITLab sensors Framework NITOS provides its users with the ability to run experiments using the temperature, humidity and light sensors (online) or even access real sensor records by using the NITOS Sensors Toolkit (offline) through OMF Framework
Channel measurement and sensing NITOS nodes are connected with GNU Radio boards NITOS provides an OMF/OML framework that supports: Muiltidimentional channel measurements and sensing using GNU radio platforms Distributed sensing Filtering
Federation among OpenLab testbeds Need for federation among heterogeneous facilities Access Reservation Experimentation
NITOS & PLE Federation Federation between wired and wireless testbeds Single Sign Up Deployment of OMF/OML at PLE resources XMPP Communication using slices
NITOS & PLE Federation Experiment Client Association decision based on end-to-end wireless and wired delay
Openlab wireless facilities and the cloud Multiple wireless measurement points Sensors GNU Radios (Channel measurements) Distributed measurement points Federated distributed testbeds that collect measurements Mobility All these facilities and features need cloud services to handle the data
NITOS & Cloud Federation Integrate NITOS sensor measurements framework with the cloud facilities NITOS provides a sensor API that collects sensor measurements through OMF framework Experiment Scenario: Periodic wireless transmission of sensor measurements to the NITOS Server Forwarding of data stored to NITOS Server to cloud facilities
NITOS & Cloud Experimentation Scenario NITOS Server Gateway Gateway
Environmental measurements NITOS features a vehicular based setup, where cars carry wireless nodes with environmental sensors Multiple Road Side Units (RSU) are installed in several places of Volos When a car gets in the rage of an RSU, forwards its measurements to the system
Federated Cloud Experimentation Scenario
