1 Based on the results of our school s needs assessment process, the following areas have been identified as priorities for improvement. Strategies to strengthen these needs are incorporated in our comprehensive School Improvement Action Plan. Data used to determine needs included outcome, demographic, process, and perceptional data. Component 1: Comprehensive Needs Assessment of the Entire School With the support of the administration and the School Improvement Team a comprehensive needs assessment is completed annually. Performance Data is collected from all grade levels related to student proficiencies in reading, math, 8th grade science and Math 1. Data is disaggregated by subgroups. Behavior and attendance data are taken in consideration for at risk students. Data is used to drive instruction as staff members strive to meet the needs of all students. Interventions will be provided for at risk students based on data. Enrichment will be provided for those students who are performing at or above grade level. PSJ will continue to survey parents and staff on an annual basis in an effort to promote success for all students. Component 2:. Schoolwide Reform Strategies Strategies to address the needs of low performing students include the following: One ESL teacher works with ESL students through out the year. Uninterrupted intervention and enrichment times are built into the daily schedule. Accel period incorporated to tutor students who achieved below a level three on EOG's in reading and in math. Teachers provide individual tutoring before and after school to at-risk students. Faculty members have also been required to adopt an at-risk student throughout the school year in an effort to improve their academics and behavior. PSJ has also added a Builder's Club which promotes charitable community involvement from our students. Data walls are being implemented in each grade level to evaulate student progress, chart results and assist teachers in mastery learning. esteam is being offered as a new course that will be implemented in steps until several courses are offered during each semester. In addition, PS Jones is hosting the Cornerstone after school program providing students with after school help in core disciplines. 2 Component 3: Highly Qualified Staff Every effort is made by the Principal and hiring committee to hire highly qualified teachers for any positions that become available. PSJ has nine first year teachers, three second year teachers and three third year teachers on staff. Each teacher is provided with a Beaufort County Schools mentor who offers support on a regular basis. An in-house PSJ subject area/grade level PLC teacher is assigned according to content area with new hires. Of the 57 certified positions at PSJ, 22 certified staff hold advanced degrees, and one is a currently National Board Certified Teacher. Component 4: Professional Staff Development Staff Development opportunities at PSJ were determined by the needs of the staff and students in an effort to help all students succeed. On site professional development designed to help increase the use of best instructional practices includes: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS), and School Net. Teachers will participate in conferences and other off site workshops designed to promote effective instructional strategies and increase student achievement. The School Improvement Team will evaluate best practices to determine effectiveness and appropriateness for implementation at PSJ. The BCS CTE director provided a team of eight volountary involvement in 21st century skills training during the summer in esteam. A team was sent to summer training to implement GRADD in the middle school system for the school year and beyond. The media coordinator regularly attends technology workshops and brings that information back to the staff. Needs Assessment Summary: Page 2 of 7

3 Component 5: Strategies to Attract Highly Qualified Teachers In an effort to attract and retain highly qualified teachers, the principal utilizes a hiring committee to assist with the interview process for each teacher hired. Staff assists in re-locating out of area personnel. In an effort to promote retention, each new teacher is assigned an on-site buddy teacher for additional support through out the year. This is in addition to the support provided by Beaufort County Schools. PTA Advisory committee provides a beginning teacher dinner to "greet and meet." The committee also provides a community discount card to be used at local businesses. A teacher angel tree is also provided at Christmas to support their efforts in the classroom. The Chamber of Commerce provides a welcome basket for new hires as well. PSJ teachers receive a school welcome bag as well. The county attempts to attract highly qualified through Job Fairs throughout the school year to attract highly qualified teachers. Component 6: Strategies to Increase Parent Involvement Various strategies are utilized in an effort to increase parent involvement at PSJ. Efforts made to inform parents include a monthly calendar of events, progress reports sent at least every three weeks, teacher web pages, weeky Blackboard Connect phone messages, school/parent system and letters written in understandable formats with translations as necessary. Two teacher translators are available at public meetings and are on hand at the site for parent conferences. PSJ offers school sponsored activities like Haunted Hallway, Book Fairs, Open House, Family Nights and student/staff ballgames in an effort to help increase parent awareness of student progress and create a partnership between home and school. PTA volunteers provide time and money to school community projects. Parents are invited to participate in the monthly School Improvement Team meetings, encouraging parent involvement in decisions made at these meetings. The meetings are advertised on the monthly school calendar, Blackboard Connect messages and on the school marquee. The School Web Site Calendar is kept up to date as well. 4 Component 7: Transition Plans for Students PSJ has a transition plan that includes activities to ease tension and promote a positive relationship between the school and home. The top 25 behavioral and at-risk students as identified at the end of the fifth grade year are invited to participate in a small group orientation day to meet all 6th grade teachers who will take them on a school tour and provide them with school supplies. The school holds an Open House prior to the start of the academic year in which families are invited to visit classrooms and to meet the teachers. We host a separate 6th, 7th and 8th grade orientation. During the school year fifth grade students visit sixth grade classrooms and eighth graders travel to Washington High School. In addition, eighth grade students are provided with information concerning the option of applying to the Early College Program on the Beaufort Community College Campus. Visits to PSJ by former students and/or Early College staff help to increase student interest. Counselors from WHS visit PSJ to meet with 8th graders and their parents to advise them in signing up for 9th grade classes. Finally, a "Moving Up Ceremony" is held at the end of the school year in an effort to give parents and students information about the upcoming year and celebrate their achievement. This event is well attended, evidence that parents are concerned about their children and want to help them to be better prepared for the next grade. Needs Assessment Summary: Page 4 of 7

5 Component 8:. Measures to Include Teachers in Decision Making Efforts are made to include teachers in decision making and are evidenced in the minutes of the monthly School Improvement Team meetings. At these meetings, parents, teachers and administrators work together through out the year to evaluate data in an effort to increase student achievement and promote the effective use of best practices. Data sources include The North Carolina Teacher Working Condition Survey results, North Carolina End of Grade Test data results, and the Beaufort County Schools School Net, and Quia programs. The School Improvement Team is made of representatives from every grade level at the school. If a representative is not able to attend, an effort is made to have another member of that grade level attend. This serves to assure that staff members at all grade levels have a voice in decisions. Faculty Meetings are held on the Tuesday following the SIT meetings. The SIT Chair prepares a monthly agenda, giving all staff members the opportunity to ask questions and make comments through out the meeting. In addition, a variety of staff members are placed on the agenda to provide updates and information about various topics. For example, the SIT chair is given time to provide updates and share current information with all faculty members in attendance. The Staff Development chair may provide reminders about upcoming events. The Assistant Principal may address concerns related to school safety. Needs Assessment Summary: Page 5 of 7

6 Component 9:. Strategies to Provide Assistance to Students Experiencing Difficulty PSJ implements a variety of strategies in an effort to meet the needs of students needing additional assistance. Various data sources such as EOG results, and classroom data are used in determining which students need additional support and the particular areas of concern. Teachers continue to receive training in the utilization of formative assessment procedures as a means of making sound instructional decisions for all students. A schedule is developed and utilized that allows teachers at each grade level time for planning and evaluating data with their grade level and/or subject area colleagues. One ELL instructor works with students who are at risk based on data from the ACCESS/WIDA assessments. She serves the PSJ students three days per week. This teacher conferences with the regular classroom teachers to provide support based on student performance as well as current curriculum pacing. Opportunities for working with at risk students are available after the regular school hours at various times through out the year. PS Jonescontinues the whole-satff mentoring program implemented in 2014 and staff members adopt a behaviorally or adademically at risk student to mentor throughout the year. Pamlico Pals is an outside agency that is utilized to work with our at-risk students. Cornerstone, a grant funded porgram that provides after school tutoring and enrichment activities to struggling students. The program operates two hours, four days a week. The two school counselors provide additional services such as peer mediation and whole class presentations and career day. Needs Assessment Summary: Page 6 of 7

7 Component 10: Coordination and Integration of all Resources Every effort is made to coordinate all resources. Funds from various sources are utilized in an effort to promote student success and maintain a safe setting. PRC 855 Instructional Supply funds are used to purchase classroom resource materials. PRC 854 Discretionary Allotment funds are used to purchase technology resources, classroom furniture, and/or materials to support school safety. PRC 031 Low Wealth Funds are used to purchase classroom instructional supplies. In addition, PSJ is fortunate to have the support of the local community resources such as the PSJ PTA and local churches. Teachers are encouraged to apply for various grant opportunities in an effort to provide additional instructional resources for their classrooms. Needs Assessment Summary: Page 7 of 7
