3 INTRODUCTION The RI-120 is a Reader Interface Board that was designed to work with the IC-1600 Intelligent Controller and the Access Gold or ASI 200 software programs. It is capable of working with any wiegand output card-reader. The RI-120 transfers the data from the card reader up to the IC Four Monitoring points on the RI-120 also send signals up to the IC Two output relays on the RI-120 are provided for door access control. The CEM 133 Contact Expansion Module may be used with the RI-120 to expand the RI- 120 monitor and output points. Note: This document is valid only for RI-120 boards with firmware version 4.0 or higher. 4 J4 HOST COMMUNICATIONS J4 provides the connections for communications to the host IC1600 or a CE Removable terminal blocks are provided for easy installation. The RI-120 requires a 4-wire connection to the host. The cable should be 22 gauge, shielded cable, consisting of 2 twisted pair, and all shields earth grounded at one end. The maximum distance is 2 miles from the IC A Channel expander (A channel expander multiplexes one channel on the IC-1600 into 16 ports) can extend that distance another 2 miles. Please note that the greater the distance, the greater the delay in transfer of data between the RI-120 and the IC Host ( a channel J4 - RI-120 or port ) Data + Pin #1 Data - Pin #2 Enable + Pin #3 Enable - Pin #4 J5 INSTALLING A READER The RI-120 provides 6 wire connections for a reader. The cable length from the reader to the RI-120 should not exceed 500 feet. The cable should be 22 gauge, shielded cable, consisting of 3 twisted pair, and all shields earth grounded at one end. The standard RI-120 will read 26 or 27 bit card formats (customized firmware for the RI-120 supports additional card formats). J5 provides the following connections for a reader: Compatible Reader J5 - RI-120 5VDC Pin #1 20VDC Pin #2 Ground Pin #3 LED Control Pin #4 Data 0 Pin #5 Data 1 Pin #6 Page 4 Copyright 2009, Access Specialties International, LLC All Rights Reserved

5 J6 INPUT CONNECTIONS Three dedicated software-defined inputs, along with one user definable input are available. The software defined monitoring points are for the EXIT push-button, DOOR OPEN DETECT monitor, and TAMPER detect (Note: a grounding connector is provided). All inputs have an LED indicator, which will emit light when the input contacts are closed. Label J6 - RI-120 Input 0 Pin #1 Door Open Detect/Forced Entry Detect * Input 1 Pin #2 Exit Push-button Input 2 Pin #3 Tamper Detect Input 3 Pin #4 User Definable Ground Pin #5 Ground Pin #6 All monitor points can be tied to alarms and conditional responses in the host access control software. The Door Open Detect input is explained in detail on figure 5.1 and 5.2 at the end of this guide. When the Exit Push-button s circuit is completed with the Ground, both the Go and the Shunt relay will fire. As long as the circuit is completed, the relays will stay energized. After the circuit is opened, the relays will stay energized for their respective times. Tamper detected message is reported when the RI-120 senses that the input went from a closed state to an open state. The User Definable monitor point can be used for anything from motion sensors, smoke detectors and other items. All User definable monitor points must be defined in the Monitor Points tab of the RI-120 device definition if they are to be used. If you issue a Go-Offline command to the RI-120, the RI-120 would not report any activity from all user-definable points. This includes the 1 point that comes with the RI-120 (input 3) and the 12 additional points on the CEM-133. To allow the activity to be reported again, issue a Go-Online command to the RI-120. Commanding Reader Interfaces to Go-Offline has nothing to do with communications, Degraded mode, or the software defined monitor points. It only tells the Reader Interface to ignore the activity on the User Defined inputs. This can be helpful when these points are tied to alarms and conditional responses. The RI-120 is capable of shunting the user-definable monitor points. If you choose No Shunt for the monitor point, then all activity for the monitor point is reported immediately. If you select the Open option and designate a shunt time, the system will wait for the duration of the shunt time to report it as an Open condition. This would be used when the monitor point is normally in a closed state. If the monitor point is normally open, you could select the Closed option to shunt. The amount of time that you specify for the condition to shunt is how long the system has to wait before reporting the Closed state to the host software. 6 J7 OUTPUT CONNECTIONS There are 2 dedicated relay outputs available: 1 GO relay and 1 SHUNT relay. Three additional user-definable outputs are available by adding a CEM-133. All output relays are rated at 28 VDC or 120VAC, with both voltages rated at 3A. Each output has an LED indicator that emits light when the relay is energized. When D10 emits light, this indicates that the Go relay is energized. When D11 emits light that indicates that the Shunt relay is energized. The Go time symbolizes the amount of time the user has to open the door. The Shunt time symbolizes the amount of time the user has to close the door. If the door is not closed within the shunt time, Door Held Open is reported in Monitor Activity of Access Gold or in Transaction Monitor of ASI Function J7 RI-120 Output 0 Common Pin #1 * Output 0 Normally Open Pin #2 Output 0 Normally Closed Pin #3 Output 1 Common Pin #4 * Output 1 Normally Open Pin #5 Output 1 Normally Closed Pin #6 * Note: Output 0 is the GO RELAY and Output 1 is the SHUNT RELAY. J8 POWER HOOK-UP J5 for the card reader should be connected before powering up the RI-120. J4 and J6 may be connected or disconnected while the RI-120 is powered up. 7 Switch 1 S1 controls the Go and Shunt Relays times when the Reader Interface is in Degraded Mode. Please note that if the reader has communications with the host, the Go and Shunt times can be set between 1 and 255 seconds. These times are set in Device Definition of the card reader, under Access Gold. For ASI 2000, they are set in the Device Center module. Pin 9 of S1 informs the RI-120 if there is a CEM-133 connected to it or not. RI-120 DIP Switch S1 Codes For the Go and Shunt times in Degraded Mode Go Time Position 1 Position 2 Position 3 2 Seconds Off Off Off 4 Off Off On 6 Off On Off 8 Off On On 10 On Off Off 12 On Off On 14 On On Off 16 On On On Shunt Time Position 4 Position 5 Position 6 6 Seconds Off Off Off 12 Off Off On 18 Off On Off 24 Off On On 30 On Off Off 36 On Off On 42 On On Off 48 On On On Switch 1 also controls the speed the RI-120 will attempt to communicate with the host, if the host panel supports multi-speed communications. Comm Speed Position 7 Position Baud Off Off 1200 Off On 2400 On Off Switch 2 S2 controls how the reader reacts in Degraded Mode If the RI-120 looses communication with the host IC-1600 (or CE-1600) for over fifteen seconds, the RI-120 goes into what is called Degraded Mode. In Degraded Mode the RI-120 compares the system code encoded on the card with the system code configured by setting Switch 2. If the system codes match, the RI-120 will energize the Go and Shunt Relays. 9 CEM-133 CONTACT EXPANSION MODULE OPTION (RI S1) To add 12 user-definable monitoring points and 3 controlled output relays, the CEM-133 must be attached on J1 of the RI-120. In order to activate the CEM- 133, position 9 on Switch 1 of the RI-120 board must be turned ON. When this position is turned OFF, the CEM-133 is not activated. INPUT CONNECTIONS (CEM J13 & J14) The CEM provides 12 additional input points to the RI-120 Reader Interface. An open contact will have VDC across it. A closed point will have approximately 10 ma of current. All of the input points for J14 are electrically common to ground. For more information on the usage of these inputs, see the user-definable section under the RI-120 inputs (J6). 11 TROUBLESHOOTING TECHNIQUES Tech Tip 1 Determining whether the RI-120 is getting data from the card reader 1. Present the card to the card reader. 2. While presenting the card, watch LED D5 on the RI If LED D5 flashes once as the card is presented, that means that the card reader is successfully sending up the data to RI-120. Tech Tip 2 Visually checking if there is communications from the RI-120 to the IC- 1600/CE Access Gold /panelcom or ASI Launch/Panel Manager need to be running. 2. The device number or device name of the Reader Interface must be known. 3. Look up the Device number in Device Definitions. Find out what channel or port the RI-120 is connected to on the IC-1600 or CE Edit the IC-1600 and make sure that the channel is checked so the channel is ON. 5. Look at the channel (or port for a CE-1600) and verify that the Led is flashing (the more channels that are ON, the slower the LEDs will flash). Tech Tip 3 Checking the communications from the Software 1. Access Gold /panelcom or ASI Launch/Panel Manager need to be running. 2. Click on the Monitor activity button, in Access Gold, to watch the real time transactions. For ASI 2000, click on the Transaction Monitor module. 3. Transactions from other devices must be reporting. If nothing is being reported in the Monitor activity screen or Transaction Monitor, there may be a problem with panelcom or Panel Manager respectively. 4. Send a signal up to the RI-120. Either change the state of a monitor point or present a card to the reader. 5. In the system activity screen, the signal that was just sent up from the RI-120 should be reported. If nothing is reported then there is no communications to the host. Tech Tip 4 Finding out the encoded # of a card The Same steps in Tech Tip 3 can identify the encoded #. This procedure would be necessary if the number on the outside of the card (embossed #) is different from the encoded number, and there is not a reference sheet that tells the tech these numbers. Tech Tip 5 Finding out the Device # of a Reader Interface 1. The Same steps in Tech Tip 3 can be taken to identify the device # of an RI-120 (or any other unit). When sending the signals up from the RI-120 to the IC-1600 the appropriate messages ( Access Granted, Tamper Detected etc ) should be reported with a device # or device name. 2. You can look up the device # or device name under System Devices or Device Center. The Device Definitions provides important information on the RI-120. For example, the panel #, channel #, port #, Go and Shunt times etc 3. If there is not a device # assigned to the RI-120, the message Undefined Reader will report along with the channel and port # s. Page 11 Copyright 2009, Access Specialties International, LLC All Rights Reserved

12 Tech Tip 6 Replacing a bad Comm. 20 board. 1. Many times when communications is not functioning between the IC-1600 and the Reader Interface, the comm20 board has gone bad. 2. The comm20 board is the small circuit board that is upside down in reference to the RI To replace it, power down the RI The comm20 board has two J connections. J1 and J2. 5. The process for installing the comm20 board onto the RI-120 board is to connect the low number from the comm20 board to the low number on the RI-120. This process is the same for all of Access Specialties communications daughter boards and devices. 6. Power may now be reapplied. Resetting the Reader Interface Boards 1. Power down the Reader Interface board. 2. Turn off all of the dip-switches on both S1 and S2. 3. Turn Pin 7 & 8 on SW1 to the ON position. 4. Power up the Reader Interface Board. 5. Wait 5 seconds. 6. Power down the Reader Interface. 7. Put original settings back in the switches (go & shunt times, system code, and communications speed) and power up the RI-120 board. 8. The reader interface has now been reset. This procedure can be tried whenever a Reader Interface is not sending up the card Data to the IC-1600 This procedure is also the same process for all other Reader Interfaces (RI-110 & RI- 130) This procedure causes the Go relay to chatter during this process. This chattering verifies that the RI-120 is resetting itself. This procedure will reset the operating mode to whatever is set on SW1 pins 1, 2, and 3 as follows: New Mode Position 1 Position 2 Position 3 Card Only Off Off Off Card plus Pin Off Off On Card or Pin Off On Off This procedure will reset the programmed Go and Shunt times. To restore them you will have to edit the device in Access Gold or ASI-2000 and save it. Page 12 Copyright 2009, Access Specialties International, LLC All Rights Reserved
