Part of the Best-Practices Handbook Introduction To Barcodes Barco de forma t A barcode is an optical representation of data. Barcodes exist in 1D format (linear) and 2D format (geometric patterns). Barco de o ri gin In this document you will find some information that will give you a basic introduction to barcodes. If you need more details about particular barcodes, have a look at the different types of barcodes on the following pages. We are always happy to answer any questions you might still have. The first patent for a barcode type was issued to inventors Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver on October 7, Give us a call or send us an if you are unsure deciding which barcode type to use and how to implement it on your documents. Barco de types Hundreds of barcode symbologies have been created over the years, but only a few dozen have made it to the status of worldwide standard. Barco de l imi ts Depending the selected barcode type, a barcode can contain up to 3800 s or 3000 characters. How does a barcode work Each character is represented by a pattern of wide and narrow bars. A barcode reader uses a photo sensor to convert the barcode into an electrical signal as it moves across a barcode. The scanner then measures the relative widths of the bars and spaces, translates the different patterns back into regular characters, and sends them on to a computer or portable terminal. Every barcode begins with a special start character and ends with a special stop character. These codes help the reader detect the barcode and figure out whether it is being scanned forward or backward. Some barcodes may include a checksum character just before the stop character. A checksum is calculated when the barcode is printed using the characters in the barcode. The reader performs the same calculation and compares its answer to the checksum it read at the end of the barcode. If the two don't match, the reader assumes that something is wrong, throws out the data, and tries again. There are different barcode symbologies, each with its own particular pattern of bars. The UPC code used on retail products is an all-numeric code; so is the Interleaved 2 of 5 Code. Code 39 includes upper case letters, s, and a few symbols. Code 128 includes every printable and unprintable ASCII character code.

Benefits of barcodes Save Time Reduce Errors Depending on the application, time savings can be significant. Often the most dramatic examples involve the beloved chore of taking inventory. One customer needed a crew of 25 employees working over a weekend to take the 6-month inventory; with barcodes this was reduced to 4 employees and a total of about 5 hours. Even in routine day-to-day operations the time savings of barcodes add up and improve productivity. Consider a shipment of 10 cartons; it will take approximately 2 minutes or more to write down product codes and serial Clerical and data entry errors can be a significant source of costs and related problems: extra freight costs, unhappy customers, and time spent to track down problems are just a few examples. In some situations, clerical errors can have a much more dramatic impact; consider the importance of accuracy in pharmaceutical or blood bank applications. The typical error rate for human data entry is 1 error per 300 characters. Barcode scanners are much more accurate; the error rate can be as good as 1 error in 36 trillion characters depending on the type of barcode used. numbers compared to about 10 to 20 seconds to scan the barcodes. In a busy operation this can be a significant saving. Improve Operational Efficiency Since barcodes permit faster and more accurate recording of information, work in process can move quickly and be tracked precisely. Quite a bit of time can be spent tracking down the location or status of projects, folders, instruments, materials, or anything else that moves within an organization. Barcodes can help you keep better track so you can save time and respond more quickly to inquiries and changes. Cut Costs Barcodes are effective tools that can be used to address specific, localized problems or integrated into organization-wide information systems. When applied with thought and planning they can save time and reduce errors, resulting in a reduction of costs. Benefit from Customer or Regulatory Requirements Regulatory agencies or your customers may impose labeling requirements that you must meet. While these requirements may be a necessary part of doing business, you can save time and money by utilizing the barcodes within your own operations. For example, you can collect shipping manifest information quickly and accurately by scanning the barcode labels that you printed to satisfy the customer.

What is a 2D barcode 2-Dimensional symbols are generally square or rectangular patterns that encode data in two dimensions. They fall into two general categories: 'Stacked barcodes' are constructed like a layer cake of barcodes stacked on top of the other; they can be read by special 2-D scanners or by many CCD and laser scanners with the aid of special decoding software. 'Matrix Codes' are built on a true 2-D matrix; they are usually more compact than a stacked barcode, and they can be read only by a true 2-D scanner. The primary advantage of 2-D codes is the ability to encode a lot of information in a small space. The practical limit for a standard barcode depends on a number of factors, but 20 to 25 characters is an approximate maximum; 2-D symbols can encode from 100 to about 2,000 characters. What barcode symbology should I use Are there any industry standards that your codes will have to conform to, or is an important customer insisting on a specific label format? If so, you will probably have to use whatever barcode they want. If you are marking a retail product, UPC-A is the code used in the USA and EAN-13 is used in the rest of the world. If you are shipping containers to the U.S. Government you will need to adhere to the LOGMARS specification (which uses Code 39). If the application is strictly for internal use and you can choose anything you want, do you now or will you ever need to encode letters as well as numbers? If so, Code 39 or Code 128 would be a good choice. If you need only numbers, Interleaved 2 of 5 would do the job although Code 128 tends to be more robust and just as compact for numeric data. If you have to encode a lot of data, take a look at PDF-417. If you need to squeeze a small or modest amount of data into a really small space, then DataMatrix might be a good choice. Depending on the details of your application there may be other codes to consider. If you need help deciding what type of code to use send us an describing your requirements and we'll try to help.

Different types of barcodes A Barcode Symbology defines the technical details of a particular type of barcode: the width of the bars, character set, method of encoding, checksum specifications, etc. Most users are more interested in the general capabilities of a particular symbology (how much and what kind of data can it hold, what are its common uses, etc) than in the excruciating technical details. Numeric-only barcodes Codabar: Older code often used in library systems, sometimes in blood banks Code 11: Used primarily for labeling telecommunications equipment EAN-13: European Article Numbering international retail product code EAN-8: Compressed version of EAN code for use on small products Industrial 2 of 5: Older code not in common use Interleaved 2 of 5: Compact numeric code, widely used in industry, air cargo MSI: Variation of the Plessey code commonly used in USA Plessey: Older code commonly used for retail shelf marking PostNet: Used by U.S. Postal Service for automated mail sorting UPC-A: Universal product code seen on almost all retail products in the USA and Canada Standard 2 of 5: Older code not in common use UPC-E: Compressed version of UPC code for use on small products Alpha-numeric barcodes Code 128: Very capable code, excellent density, high reliability; in very wide use world-wide Code 39: General-purpose code in very wide use world-wide Code 93: Compact code similar to Code 39 LOGMARS: Same as Code 39, this is the U.S. Government specification 2-Dimensional barcodes PDF417: Excellent for encoding large amounts of data DataMatrix: Can hold large amounts of data, especially suited for making very small codes Maxicode: Fixed length, used by United Parcel Service for automated package sorting QR Code: Used for material control and order confirmation Data Code Code 49 16K Industry Standards for Barcodes and Labels Bookland EAN encodes ISBN numbers, used internationally to mark books ISSN and the SISAC Barcode: International Standard Serial Numbering OPC: Optical Industry Association barcode for marking retail optical products UCC/EAN-128: Widely used data formatting model for Code 128 UPC Shipping Container Symbol: ITF-14

For retail products, the standard symbology in the U.S.A. is UPC-A, or the Universal Product Code. Internationally, the standard symbology is EAN-13 (European Article Numbering international retail product code). For marking shipping cartons of retail products for distribution, the most common symbol is the UPC Shipping Container Symbol (ITF-14). For marking shipping containers of all types, the most commonly-used barcode is UCC/EAN-128. Different industries often have specific requirements for barcode labeling, so be sure to get details from your customers when they ask you to start marking packages or items with barcodes. C U S T O M D E V E L O P M E N T Developing tailor made templates designed for For books, the international standard is the Bookland EAN symbology (ISBN barcode). For periodicals, the international standard symbology is ISSN (International Standard Serial Numbering ). In addition to the ISSN code, SISAC (International Standard Serial Numbering) codes are often found on serial publications. maximized recognition and automated workflow processing.
