2 Mission of MD-PhD Programs To train individuals who will be leaders in elucidating disease mechanisms, optimizing health services outcomes or engaging is academic scholarship related to health and disease

3 What is a physician-scientist? Trained as a physician (MD) and an investigator (PhD) Takes care of patients and does research that is tied to human biology and human disease Works at an academic medical center, research institute, in industry or in government agency Enjoys his/her career immensely!!

4 How is MD-PhD training done? Nationwide, ~100 MD-PhD programs in Colleges of Medicine, including 46 supported by NIH Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) grants Programs creatively mix MD and PhD phases to complete both degrees in about 8 years PhD can be awarded in a wide variety of disciplines

5 Overview of the Iowa MSTP Founded in 1977 (Year 38 of continuous NIH funding) Full tuition and stipend provided 64 current students (8-10 students per class) 158 faculty from 25 departments 17 PhD Programs in 4 Colleges ~ 7.5 years to complete training 198 graduates

6 Curriculum of the Iowa MSTP Integrated curriculum that assimilates scientific investigation and clinical training Emphasizes connections and intersections between science & medicine at all stages of training.

7 Curriculum of the Iowa MSTP 1.5 years - Medical (some Graduate) 4-5 years - Graduate (some Medical) 1.5 years Medical Total Time-to-Degree = 7.5 years MSTP Grand Rounds, Professional Development Workshops and Community Building Activities occur throughout training
