1 Teaching Artist Fellowship Season About the Teaching Artist Fellowship About First Stage For over 28 years, First Stage has successfully trained hundreds of emerging professionals using comprehensive teaching, performance, and leadership experiences to launch their careers as artists and educators. The Teaching Artist Fellowship aims to support theater artists on their personal and professional journeys. In the classroom, fellows will grow through curriculum development, classroom observations, hands-on teaching, and one-on-one mentorship. On stage, fellows will grow through performance opportunities and new play development. All of these experiences can lead to future employment at theater companies here in Milwaukee and across the country. First Stage is dedicated to broadening our reach and deepening our impact in the community, and we invite you to join us in our mission to transform lives through theater! Photo by Paul Ruffolo First Stage strives to be the national leader and driving force behind the creation of the best and most innovative plays for family audiences, theater training programs for young people, and education initiatives for our schools and our community. Through our exceptional leadership, dedicated team, and commitment to financial sustainability, First Stage broadens the reach and impact of our transformational programs, thus enabling dreams to be fulfilled, hope to be fostered, and families to enjoy the lasting legacy of a profound shared experience. First Stage touches hearts, engages minds, and transforms lives by creating extraordinary theater experiences for young people and families through: Professional theater productions that inspire, enlighten, and entertain Unparalleled Theater Academy training that fosters life skills through stage skills Dynamic Theater in Education programs that promote active learning in our schools and community These three interwoven programming pillars are accessible to, and reflective of, our increasingly diverse southeastern Wisconsin community. 5 What makes Milwaukee great? There s an undeniable energy in fun, urban-easy Milwaukee. While still celebrating our beer brewing heritage, the city now has a powerhouse arts scene, bigcity attractions, revitalized historic districts, a burgeoning locally sourced culinary movement, and so much more. Photo courtesy VISIT Milwaukee According to the Growing Prosperity report, developed by the City of Milwaukee, The cultural scene in Milwaukee is particularly impressive for a city its size. More than 150 arts and cultural organizations call the Milwaukee region home: American Style consistently ranks the Milwaukee area as one of the top 25 arts destinations in the U.S., and in 2013 ArtPlace ranked Milwaukee s East Town (and a portion of the Lower East Side) as one of the top 12 art places in America. Photo courtesy VISIT Milwaukee The Milwaukee Youth Arts Center The Milwaukee Youth Arts Center (MYAC), a collaboration between First Stage and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO), is a contemporary, cutting edge performing arts education and rehearsal facility for the young people of southeastern Wisconsin. At MYAC, young people participate in programming in a fun, creative, multicultural environment in a setting that offers well-designed, educationally appropriate rehearsal halls, classrooms and other training spaces, as well as a theater resource center, music library, costume shop and administrative offices. In addition to First Stage and MYSO, organizations such as Milwaukee Children s Choir, Festival City Symphony, African American Children s Theatre and Danceworks hold programs and events at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center. The Milwaukee Youth Arts Center and its associated programs are dedicated to fostering talent, developing character and building the audiences of tomorrow.
